Jumble Went Very Lame!

Jumble's hips are awful but he copes very well, he bounces, boings and spins like a lunatic. Last week he started to carry his near hind, when he did dot it down he was very lame and at the walk, a rare event, he rocked and rolled much more than usual. Took him to the vet and he did loads of hip wiggling, Jumble was very grumpy about this, then saw him walk and said um, umm umm, this made me think eeeeek! He suggested Metacam for a week and if no improvement he would xray, the improvement is HUGE, within two days he stopped carrying the leg and the rolling has decreased by loads! What a relief that is, I did ask him about surgery in the long term just in general chat and he said it would be highly unlikely Jumble would be thought suitable because of his barmy nature, this is what I always thought anyway so no surprise there, we will stick with the Metacam for as long as it works for him!! Strangely it never did much for Cecil, he's better on the Trocoxil.

Poor Jumble, Barty sends his love and woofy licks.

What supplements have you got him on - I have Barty on Cortaflex which does help him greatly. I have to beg to differ about nature ruling out a surgical option for the dear boy. It is possible to get around it and an FHO might give him a better long term quality of life than leaving him on Metcam for life.

Metcam, as I am sure you know, isn't without long term health risks to liver and kidneys and I would urge you to at least ask for a referral to a top hip specialist. If you are anywhere near Nottinghamshire I can thoroughly recommend Barty's old specialist - Graham Oliver.

Anyway more love and hugs sent as I know how hard it is to watch our special "hipless" boys struggle

Aww,thanks Barty and Polly, Jumble says he will order some. We are a long way from Nottingham though, will have to find something a bit nearer. Vet will have one on tap I suppose, never thought of asking. Jumble has to go in again on Friday so will find out what I can then.

The owner of the kennels I use has a couple of elderly beardies who were on Metacam but they were concerned about side effects as one of them had lost a lot of hair.

They recently changed to Cortaflex and are delighted with the results. The old boy's hair has grown back and he is back chasing next door's collie down the fence.

They no longer give them Metacam.
