Rumpole
i got a link sent through from moneysaving expert about free solar panels being offered. Apparently the company fits and maintains them for free you use the electrickery from them (saving up to 300 quid a year) and the company gets a kick back from the government as a green power incentive, only catch is you need a south facing roof and its a 25 year sign up but you get to keep the solar panels after that time. i dont know if they cover all areas or not but was interested to know if anyone has had them fitted apparently theres another company called a shade greener offering the same. http://www.isis-solar.com/ http://www.ashadegreener.co.uk/

Maria
I was looking at this last week after hearing it discussed on the radio - ploughed through all the 20 odd pages of that MSE thread Sounded very tempting, but personally was abit wary about having to commit to 25 years, and also you only really seem to benefit if you are about to use the electricty during the day, as it isn't stored (otherwise the co benefit as they will sell it) Towards the end of the long thread it was mentioned that there may soon be Pay as you Save schemes, whereby you buy the panels on finance (and so get the generation and resale fees), but the repayments are scheduled so that you will pay less than the savings / income you should make. So, as usual, we decided not to make a decision yet
chickentikka
Don't do it - they basically coin it in and you save a miniscule amount on electricity bills and are a bit stuffed if you want to sell your house. The expected lifetime of the very best solar panels is an absolute maximum of 25 years. I'll find a linky to the figures and be back
