Our previous "golden chancellor" "no more boom and bust" Gordon. Who was never any good at maths (doesn't it show?)and brought the country to its knees is now backing the mirrors campaign to tackle dangerous dogs. But and a very big BUT.... He stopped short of agreeing to review the act.

Dear Sir/Madam

i have just seen your article

http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2009/12/26/our-present-to-help-george-7-rebuild-his-life-after-terrifying-attack-by-dog-115875-21923041/

and would like to congratulate you on undoing all the hard work done over the years by animal rescues and behaviourists in trying to persuade people not to give pets as presents, have you no idea how irresponsible this is, not just because of the fact that many animals become unwanted after christmas, but from a safety and social point of view.

Animals can and do become unsettled at this time of year decorations are up in the house, many visitors are calling, people are drunk with parties in full swing and funnily enough children are excitable and playing with new toys/games all of which can be terrifying to a dog.

The Mirror currently has a campaign against dangerous dogs and if the paper had done its homework (or even taken a look at some of their own devil dog headlines from recent years) it would see that a huge amount of serious incidents occur at social gatherings such as parties or barbecues or during the festive season, that is because large gatherings of people/children, loud music, the presence of alcohol and people leaving and entering premises at will, all serve to unsettle a dog.

Also if the mirror had done its homework and researched the breed of dog they have chosen they would also have found that the job of work that labradors have been bred to do for years involves retrieving game and therefore putting things in their mouths, as puppies they practice this by mouthing things including hands and fingers until they learn bite inhibition, this practice though perfectly normal could be detrimental to this childs recovery, not aid it. Labradors adorable as they are bear absolutely no resemblence to the cavalier the family previously felt was the right breed for them, so how on earth would you know if the family set up is suitable for one.

I would ask if this puppy was purchased from a responsible breeder in normal circumstances but as responsible breeders do not sell puppies as presents i really dont feel the need to.

I just hope that the Daily Miirror will be responsible for this puppies wellbeing for the rest of its life instead of relying on already overstretched rescues should it all go horribly wrong, and also that it has also provided access to proper training to both the dog and its family, as lack of knowledge or training is the most important factor in why dogs become dangerous, and its important to note that to have a well socialised and well adjusted dog, their owners also require training.

As you can probably tell, as a behaviourist and a legal advisor concerning dog law i am thoroughly disgusted at your actions, and especially your lack of knowledge of dogs and why things go wrong, What you have done has given out completely the wrong message to your readers and could play a part in future incidents occurring.

Getting a dog is a huge decision to make and every effort should be made to ensure that proper thought is given to breed and size, as well as the best way to introduce a dog to new surroundings, this is not accomplished by giving dogs as presents.

Given that you are running a high profile campaign which seems to target breeds rather than the actual cause of incidents, i sincerely hope your actions do not come back to bite you on the behind later.

I saw this one too...Who would be responsible if this did go horribly wrong. Would the Mirror hold a front page heading "the mirrors labrador christmas present to a recent dog attack victim aged just 7 who is still wary/nervous of dogs go horribly wrong"
