sproggie14
I kept hearing this weird buzzing this evening but couldn't find where it was coming from. Then I saw something flying about that looked a bit like a big wasp but made no noise when it flew. I eventually managed to contain said beasty and I've never seen anything like it before. It's terrifying. Someone please tell me this is something native and innocent and that's not actually a massive great stinger on it's butt? *shudder*

dognabbit
AWAY !........you've bought that in a toy shop ! we're no daft ye ken Course it's real!!! It's Pink Katydid - 'Amblycorypha' found in Louisiana. They're quite often brightly coloured, maybe it's for hiding in pink flowers.
owl
Love the pink katydid btw that isn't a stinger on the original insect's tail, it's an ovipositor for laying eggs in holes and crevices.
Spins4me
Oh come on!! Everyone knows that ANY insect (excluding ladybirds) with a trace of red/orange on it is a BLOOD SUCKER. We all knew that when we were kids and ran like hell if we saw one.
