Book Recommendation Needed

The third module of my course on Canine Psychology is about puppies' behaviour from when the pup's born to about teenage years. Could anyone possibly recommend a good book on this subject please? NB it is not about how you would train a puppy, it is about how a pup behaves and why they do what they do. Never having had a pup meself I've not got any books on the subject. Any suggestions much appreciated! :flowers:

Are you looking at the developmental stages - what happens when with regard to behaviour, instincts etc and the timings of when it kicks in? If so try googling developmental stages dogs as there's a lot of good stuff on the net. Also there's a bit on it in The Puppy Whisperer by Paul Owens but it's predominantly a book for puppy owners / training manual.

Will have a look at that! What course were/are you doing? I'm doing the Compass canine behaviour and psychology, but I'm not really enjoying it at all. I'm looking to change to a different course provider once I've struggled my way through this course. It's just the way it's being presented, it doesn't interest or motivate me at all :(

i think youll find many courses are the same billy they are set to make you go and look elsewhere, i found google was my friend and links can be found to most of the leaders in the field of behaviour

i did the compass canine aggression course and still have the course books from that which you are welcome to borrow they all contain information about the critical periods of development.

i have james o heare, James Serpell and Bonnie beaver which are all fab workbooks the serpell book has each chapter written by a different behavioural specialist

ooooooooh - best books on puppy stuff I've read have been the Coppingers stuff and the Ian Dunbar Puppy book which is a free download from his website DogStarDaily

Thanks for that, just downloaded his 'before' and 'after' puppy books! :) Too late to start reading now, but I will get round to it in the next days.

Melf - that canine agression course sounds better than what I'm currently doing - maybe written by different people? Would like to borrow the course book if that's okay - if you PM me your addy (prolly for the umpteenth time by now  ) I'll pick it up within the next week or so? Thanks! :flowers:
