Saffy - Gorgeous 10 Year Old Collie Cross

Saffy is a 10 year old Border Collie cross - but to look at her, you’d think she was a German shepherd puppy! She is a charming little dog, small for a collie, with a lovely soft coat, and a bobbed tail (her tail was amputated some years ago because she had a suspect lump on it, and the vet thought it was best to remove the whole thing).

Saffy is great with children, and loves the company of other dogs. She is a playful girl who would probably enjoy the company of a younger dog, either in the home or as a regular walking companion. She is particularly fond of spaniels, but is happy to play with anyone. She loves a cuddle or a tummyrub and generally walks well on the lead. She would probably be a little too bouncy to live with a much older or frailer dog, or very nervous children, as she does tend to get excited before walks, but would make a wonderful family or grandparent’s dog. She’s not a dog that is constantly fussing in the house, she’s quite happy to have a snooze while you get on with things. At the moment she isn’t keen on going into water deeper than her toes, so she tends to stay relatively nice and clean on walks which has to be good news!

Photos of Saffy tend to end up making her look rather like a German Shepherd or Belgian Shepherd: in this photo you can see her with a GSD friend, and see how tiny she is by comparison:

Saffy is currently staying in a home with cats. At the moment they are still rather new to her, and she is a little scared of them: sometimes she ignores them, sometimes she tries to get them to go away by barking or lunging, and sometimes she tries doggy play tactics that cats don’t understand. She is coming on really well though, and is now ignoring the cats except for first thing in the morning when she gets all excited and wants to bounce about and play. She should be able to live with a confident cat if appropriately introduced.

Saffy came into the care of the Oldies Club because her owner had a change of circumstances which ended up with her being left alone for up to 10 hours a day. Sadly, it seems that this has left its mark on Saffy: she gets seriously stressed when left for even a few hours, barking, crying and suffering from stress-related colitis. Because of this, Saffy needs a new home where her family will be around her most of the time: ideally, someone who can continue to help her work through this problem. Saffy can be crated and is not destructive. She should get through the separation problem if her new owners are careful to build up the time away from her a few minutes at a time. At the moment she can be left for about an hour without problems.

Saffy travels very well in the car with no barking or bouncing. She does get rather excited when you arrive somewhere though. At the moment she is in a car harness to stop her bouncing out as soon as the doors are open, but she has been nibbling at the harness, so possibly a car crate would be better for long journeys!

Her new owners will also need to be careful about her diet and understand that she may be stressed by new experiences. Her new family will also need to be prepared for the grooming that her lovely soft coat needs: it’s not very high maintenance, but it will tangle if not given a brush from time to time.
