Deb
Mungo the trailie has been licking his bottom for a few months, and has had his anal glands emptied twice when being at the vets for another thing. The last 2 days, he has yelped very loudly when he has done this (once in the middle of the night last night - great for my sleep!) and jumped up to walk around. Night before last he vomited a tiny bit in the night, and this morning....and I must stress, for a trailie, this is the worst sympton of all.... HE SHOWED NO INTEREST IN HIS BREAKFAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Even when I soaked it in warm water and made it all squooshy and smelly and appetising (not for me I hasten to add). Any ideas about this? I will probably call the vet anyway, and feed him rice for a day or so, but I know nothing about anal glands (which is a good thing I feel ;) ), and don't know if they would be painful enough to make him yelp, or to put him off hid food, or if they are unconnected, or if there is something else going on. His poos are fine by the way. If anyone has any comments they would be much appreciated, thanks! Sorry if you are eating your breakfast Edited February 16, 2006 by Deb
border collie
If they are inflamed or infected, yes they would make him yelp or off his food. A vets visit methinks By the way, if he won't eat his lovely breakfast he probably won't eat rice. What do you feed him?
Deb
Thanks Border Collie. He has alway been fed Autarky, and has done very well on it. He has just gone out for a run on the beach with his Dad, and seemed quite up for it, so I will see if he will eat when he gets back, and keep an eye on him today. If he doesn't perk up I think evening surgery at the nice Mr Vet's will be the order of the day! I guess I just don't know the whole deal with anal glands (hmmmmm!) and don't know the ins and outs (pardon the pun) of it. If I take him to the vet I guess I will ask! border collie
Well our vet said they can sometimes get inflamed when they are only half full. If diet advice off vet or experts on refuge don't help they can operate to remove them. Touch wood had no probs with lucy's since changing from hills to burns. Deb
That's interesting BC, thanks for the info. I will ask my vet about that and if it is his glands getting inflamed I'll do some research on the food thing. If they are bothering him this much then I guess it could be a longer term issue. Typical, trailhounds are supposed to be able to eat ANYTHING!!!! Be my luck to have a finicky one!
ReikiAnge
I don't feed raw myself but I have heard a number of people have found their dog's anal gland problems improved/disappeared when they moved to feeding raw. Just a thought. Mine are on Naturediet and seem happy on that.
