That does sound chaotic! But I guess it must work otherwise no-one would be able to enter/run/win!

 

It works pretty well.

You have to consider that even a medium sized show will have 7/8 rings, each with up to 450 dogs going through in a day, and some shows have around 12 rings.

Speed is vital (not just in the ring) and we can't afford to waste even a few seconds waiting for people to run in order - people who may be running several dogs and of different sizes.

Say you run a Medium and a Large dog. Medium classes are smaller so if classes for both are on at the same time you get the Medium run out of the way first as you're less likely to miss your run in a Large class.

I know someone who is currently running 7 collies covering 4 or 5 grades. She manages under the way we work here.

Skilful ring management is the key. It isn't a case of just running when you like. Ring parties will call running orders in blocks to keep queues to a manageable length, although even then there can be flexibility.
