gooster
Like it says in the title really. The computer won't switch off. It has been on for over 24 hours now, and no amount of pressing the turn off button will switch it off. I can't find a reset button on it either Also internet explorer keeps crashing for no apparent reason. An AVG scan hasn't revealed anything untoward Any suggestions? border collie
Have you tried holding the on/off button until it goes off? Instead of just pressing it I mean
gooster
Yep. I think it's one of those buttons that only works to switch it on, but not off if you get what I mean

cindere528
Have you tried switching it off at the socket on the wall? I occasionally have to do that when mine won't switch off. I don't think it's good for the computer to do that, but at least it saves on the leccy
Paul
Unless it has developed it's own life form you could always pull the mains lead out of the wall socket. Leave it a few seconds then plug it back in, restart the PC and let it do the disk check when it reboots. It should sort itself out. Normally, if you hold the power button in for five seconds it forces a shut off too. Edited December 17, 2006 by Paul
Ingrid
We had a similar problem last year, plus the damn thing wouldn't turn on when it was cold, we had to kick start it with a hair, had all sorts of suggestions to cure the problem, but were told to start with the cheapest, a new PSU and that solved the problem. We just turned it off at the plug and let it do a check on starting
