crazyspaniels
Purchased a DVD writer for PC, replacing the cd writer with it. So I removed the CD writer and attatched the cables that had been in the cd writer into the DVD writer, same set up, but when i switched the PC back on it came up operator not found and wouldn't let me do anything, so i had to switch it all back to the cd writer and the pc is happy. So what have I missed????
snow
The drivers? CD writer drivers won't work with a dvd writer ... did you have a disk with the dvd writer? The drivers should be on that.
crazyspaniels
it doesn't have a disk with it?? checked the pioneer website for a driver and it says "Important notice Win95/98/2000/ME/XP and NT do not require any additional device drivers to control the here below mentioned drives as they will use their own generic device drivers. Installing the MS-DOS drivers below on a Windows-95/98/NT or 2000 system will cause problems as they will conflict with the generic drivers. All files are generally self extracting archives. Place the EXE file into its own directory and then execute. After extraction refer to the included readme.txt or instruction file and follow these explicitly. ZIP files require an extraction utility such as WinZip." does that mean it should have just run itself? OK so read the wrong bit, so found a downloadable thingy but it won't download?? pioneer website I knew I should have sent this to a man to do

crazyspaniels
aaarrhhhh. OK I assume it won't let me download the driver unless it can pick up the dvd writer, which I can't install as the computer doesn't recognise it
snow
OK have you set the dvd jumpers correctly? If you already have another cd drive in the pc the dvd should be set to slave, if this is the only device then it should be set to master. It's worth trying the install with one setting then if that doesnt work try with the other. Theres a basic guide with pics here: http://compreviews.about.com/od/tutorials/ss/DIYCDDVD.htm With the pioneer some reviews I have read say the firmware/drivers will need updating others say they don't (so thats helpful - not lol) If we can get the pc to recognise the drive then we'll know if it'll need additional drivers. crazyspaniels
that was it snow, it was default set to master so I set it to slave and it is OK. How do I know if I need to install a driver??
snow
If it works ok without a driver then you don't need one *laughs* if you get any problems with it burning or playing then you might... most of the time it depends on what software you use to burn stuff... so give it a try out and see what happens! Glad it's all installed properly now
crazyspaniels
what software do you use to burn stuff, a freebie one, I have had a few suggested but not sure what to go for?
snow
I use Nero or Intervideo purely because they came free with the pc sadly they aren't shareware... however http://www.download.com/DeepBurner-Free/30...tml?tag=lst-0-6 Thats had excellent reviews and is free
crazyspaniels
Panties, everything was looking good until the burn failed because "writer error [unit attnetion(power on, reset, or bus device reset occured)] "
crazyspaniels
had a thought, does it matter what disks I use. I have DVD+R as I had them lying about, should I be using DVD-RW's??
snow
Driver issue OR settings issue causes that error... http://www.deepburner.com/help/ You can fiddle about with deepburner (try reducing the burn speed?) or you can try another program, Nero has a free trial version... not sure how long the free trial last tho http://www.nero.com/en/Downloads.html Your specs for the drive say it should support DVD+R
crazyspaniels
will try the free trial of nero to see if its the set up or the deep burner
