I try......but don't always succeed Eggs come from my own chickens...I bought them as I was becoming increasingly uneasy about how chickens are kept....even the so-called free range ones. Don't eat nearly as much chicken now Try and buy from a local butcher...who takes the mickey(in a funny way) about knowing the name of every cow/pig etc but must admit I also end up buying in the supermarket when I'm pushed for time!

Dogstar Needs Buster Collars ( Link now working )
mandy replied to Happylittlegreensquirrel's topic in Animal Chat
I've got a couple of GSD size ones somewhere and will ask my vet to put a poster up too. I'll pm you my email addy. Just a thought, but if there's going to be a DnB meet in Liverpool is anyone going who could collect from us up North and get them to you? mandy -
The plan of action for now is metacam+tramadol+antibiotics There are 2 tramadol and 2 antibiotics twice a day, plus the epiphen plus glucosamine plus green lipped mussel....poor lad will be rattling!!!! I had to get the tramadol from the chemist and on the label it says For Axel the dog Keep away from children If causes drowsiness do not operate machinery Avoid alcohol For animal use only What kind of dog do they think I've got?.....I know he's clever but that's ridiculous!!!

Thinking good thoughts for you

Well................we've had a really good chat. The upshot of it is that the vet is going to speak to the hospital vets and come up with a plan of action. Like we'll try x for so long, if no improvement try y for so long etc. then we have a proper plan so that we can be sure we have tried everything, and we will have a pre-determined end point where we can make the decision to let him go with the knowledge we have tried everything. Some of the drugs have a risk of liver damage etc, but we have decided that a shorter happy life is better than a long unhappy one....if it comes to that. I feel a bit better as it's all a bit more scientific now and in a couple of days we should have a proper plan of action. I'll keep you informed....your support really does mean a lot Mandy

Thanks again for all your good thoughts I think that all the vets we have seen don't think hydrotherapy would work,as it isn't his movement and muscle tone that's the problem...his muscles are actually quite good....it's just the pain/discomfort that we can't get on top of We have an appointment to discuss options with the vet at 6 tomorrow so I guess i'll have to take it from there

Thanks again guys He's on high dose metacam at the moment, and has also been on morphine patches....with no effect. I don't think homeopathy stands a chance...to be honest...might have a look about it when I get back from the vets this week. The trouble with painkillers is we have to be careful not to set his epilepsy off so are limited to what we can use. ruff72...what's PLT? Just googled it....he couldn't have it because of the odd things that are going on with his infected skin, they won't let him have steroids...shame!

Thanks guys It's similar to a sausage collar that he's wearing....it stops him chewing....but doesn't stop him wanting to....that's what makes me feel bad. The vet doesn't think hydrotherapy would help. Reiki would be greatly appreciated thank you Here's a photo of my big lad and what his back looks like when he chews

Thanks for that Ian. We know it is his hips that is causing him to nibble....he's had approx £1500 worth of tests at the vet hospital to rule out everything else. When his hips were X-rayed I mentioned surgery....but he's gone past the point where it would be helpful. As well as his painkillers he is on food with added glucosamine etc, and has supplements of glucosamine, chondroitin and also green lipped mussel. He also has cod liver oil. I have tried both increasing his exercise and decreasing it....nothing appears to make any difference. Oh....he's had acupuncture too. All suggestions are appreciated though, as I'm prepared to try most things!!

I had the same thing with Elmo...changed him on to gluten free food (Autarky is the cheapest round here) and he seldom has problems now. He gets his emptied for good measure when he goes for his jabs, but seldom needs to go inbetween HTH Mandy

As some of you know, we have had ongoing problems with Axel chewing his back and it getting really nasty and infected because of his underlying hip dysplasia. I have managed to clear his skin up by making him permanently wear a surgical collar thingy that stops him biting. He has been on numerous painkillers to try and get him comfortable, but everytime he manages to get his collar off (overnight) his back is raw and bleeding by the morning Its obvious to me, that although he is quite mobile and doesn't look like a "painful dog"....as the vet puts it, he must be in constant discomfort, as he chews his back again as soon as he gets the chance. I don't feel it's fair to make him spend the rest of his life uncomfortable with the collar on, but can't leave him without it or he gets a raging skin infection. I am going to make an appointment with the vet this week to see if there are any other painkillers we can try to make him comfortable. If not, I am going to take him the week after (while my son is away) and send him to doggie heaven where he won't be in this awful discomfort. I feel terrible as he's not poorly as such, but don't think we have any kind options left....his hips are only going to get worse, and if we can't get him comfy, I feel it would be cruel to keep him going, just because we love him and don't want to lose him. Sat here crying my bloody eyes out at the thought....but I don't know what else I can do. Sorry to go on...but I know you lot will understand and hopefully help me feel less like a murderer! Thanks Mandy
