  1. Hi! I'm not going to be able to stay over at the Old Piggery B and B for 2 nights as planned and will possibly have to consider coming just for the day. Daughter who was going to stay in my house with my 2 oldies and 5 cats has a young dog who has just had major abdominal surgery and is very poorly and she has to be her priority so she will have to pop back and forth between her house and mine. I am going to ring the campsite later to advise them of the cancellation but if anyone wants comfortable accommodation for 2 nights it's going begging. Not sure of cost. Sally.
  2. 2 for me please, will collect and pay at the weekend. Thanks.
  3. Newbie too! Looking forward to weekend although not able to do long walks due to needing 2 new knees! Will be dogless for the weekend as my oldie boy and girl will be spending a spoiling rotten weekend with daughter and grandchildren and lots of home comforts.
  4. I think it very much depends on the dog(s) , lifestyle and length of time they are left. My mother lived with me for many years when I worked full time so there was always someone in the house; I had to continue to work full time after she died and had 3 old dogs then who adjusted well although I was able to get home some days in the middle of the day and always walked them morning and evening. I now work part time and for 2 days can be out of the house from 8-5, although I do some work from home. My daughter pops in one day a week to let them out at lunchtime but quite often they are sound asleep and happily settle down again after a wee, snack and cuddle - they are 12 and 13! They are walked morning and evening and occasionally are left all day but seem quite settled. On the days my daughter works her 2 young dogs are left from 9-3.30 when I collect the children from school. They have free access to a 140foot garden through a dog flap and on the one day neither she nor I are there until evening she pays a dog walker; her dogs are walked daily by her or her partner. I don't think I would have a younger dog now as I and my 2 happily manage a nice gentle stroll up to the local farm , arthtritis allowing, daily, and I would struggle to give a young dog the exercise commitment needed. Even working full time dogs can be given a good quality of life and it's just a question of making the right match for the dog and for you, however, I have never had a single dogs and have always kept 2+. Good luck! Sally.
  5. Will be staying in the Band B but happy to bring provisions if anyone can say what's needed, including alcohol! Will be just me and possibly one dog in my car so if any help needed with transport or ferrying anything happy to help out. I'm on the outskirts of Stockport. Sally.
  6. I had a yorkie who was blind in one eye and then developed cataracts in her good eye at the age of 7; she had an operation to remove the cataract although within 3 years she lost the sight in that eye completely but continued happily on until the age of 14. The only thing she stopped doing was to jump onto the windowsill when she heard my car but she adjusted to every other activity and managed to get into the car without missing a step as she always believed sitting on my passenger seat was her rightful place! I also had a very ancient poodle placed with me by a local rescue which had been found wandering in a busy town centre. He was completely blind and partially deaf and came into a household of 5 dogs and 6 cats. It took this spirited little fellow less than a week to work out where the doors were, to avoid obstacles and where the most comfy seats were! He lived happily on for 2 years after he moved in and his personality and spirit left a huge gap. The other animals accepted him and he coped very well, adjusting to the rush when anyone came to the door or a doggy charge was necessary! Please don't despair, I'm sure your girl will adjust and it sounds as if she's making huge strides already. Good luck. Sally.
  7. I hope the police do take some action about this man's bullying behaviour - they would have to if he made racist comments. He not only is inciting his dog to be aggressive but what kind of message is the toddler getting about behaviour in general and how to behave around dogs. Good luck and don't feel intimidated, the problems are all his not yours or your dogs. Sally.
  8. Kate, Not sure what's happening with this but at the time I offered help I was in a different job. Unfortunately due to work commitment unable to attend the show. Good luck to everyone, hope you get lots of support and interest for the dogs. Sally.
  9. One badge please, Golden Oldie aka Sally . Will gladly make a donation. Sally.
  10. Booked self and one dog into The Piggery - B & B on site, interesting name! Owner said the building used to be the old farm piggery before conversion into the B&B for people with dogs in tow.Looking forward to the weekend. Sally.
  11. Hi everybody. Just to say thank you for the lovely welcome to the forum. Pics as soon as I can get the technology right! Sally.
  12. Kate, I am thinking of joining the weekend camp and would also like to help out at the Staffordshire County show on the stall or wherever I can be of use. My only slight problem is that I am going to have 2 knee replacements because of arthritis at some point which means I can't stand for very long periods or walk very fast - makes me sound like an old crock but I'm really not! I drive, walk the dogs etc. etc. Any accommodation over the weekend would sadly not include camping as my camping days are over! Any ideas - are there going to be static caravans available, will gladly book now. Isn't it good to hear how the lovely Bailey has settled. Sally. I'm new to getting pics on the website so am waiting for daughter or son in law to help out Sally!
  13. Hi! I'm Sally; new to transporting for the Oldies Club but have over 30 years of involvement in animal welfare under my belt. I retired from full time employment in November 2006 and now work part time , some of which is from home so I have lots of time with my menagerie. When I retired I had just 1 elderly collie x (now sadly gone) and 5 cats, having lost 2 of my beloved oldies that year, a long haired dachs. and a border terrier x, all rescues. My family were going to get me a dachs. pup as for years all my animals had been arriving on the basis of 'can you take', have you room for','noone else wants' from my vet, kennels, cattery etc. They thought it would be nice for me to choose a dog for a change. My dachs. puppy morphed into a 12 year old, 53 kg. labrador with a variety of lumps and bumps, severe arthritis and a wheeze like an old engine! 17 months. later and he is a bit slimmer, still 'bumpy and lumpy' but with a fair old turn of speed if he wants to play with the grandchildren or another dog. Menagerie now consists of : Winston - lab. -13 Tammy - lab. -11 Esther - cat 15 Owly - cat -16+ Jess - cat 8 Sophie - cat -4 Oliver - cat -3 5 Giant African Land Snails - looking for homes if anyone is interested. Extended family includes 6 dogs, 4 of which live in France and a cat. Really enjoying the dog rescue forums and having the time to enjoy them and to be of use supporting the Oldies Club. Sally.
  14. So glad he's settling in - what a lovely boy he is . I did the first leg of the transport yesterday and had to initially cope with a very aroused, anxious and confused dog who quickly settled after I stopped the car and spent a little while reassuring him and then sat or stood puffing in my ear and resting his head on my shoulder for the hour down the motorway. Anyway, he.s going to get lots of attention now - what a lovely start to your fostering. Good luck. Sally.
  15. Fee, Happy to get permission to put general poster and also one of Zak (Sheffield) in my vets; I live in High Peak and my 2 oldies are well known at the vets. Sally.
