  3. 15x6 is a lovely sized run for 3 or 4 chickens and it is a good idea to have a walk in run, for cleaning and for spending time with them. Our chickens live in a converted summer house. In winter we insulated the inside with large sheets of cardboard and we have replaced the windows with polycarbonate. Our run is an odd shape but about 6 foot high and is now fully roofed, has various perches and we are in the process of adding a mezzanine level (very posh are our battery hens) as the seem to love to sit up high and the battery girls aren't very good at using the perches. We started off with the summer house, a couple of cat boxes for nesting, a shelf to store the various chicken paraphanalia and a run with a couple of logs in it for sitting on we've just added bits on over the years. We have never had a problem with red mite dispite having a felt roof and as long as the chickens have somewhere to snuggle up and arene't in a draft the cold doesn't bother them. Go on Fee - take the plunge
  4. Some of my favourites to take to work are: Salad with mixed beans with a balsamic vinegar dressing. Salad with vege sausage and marmite croutons (well I like it ) Brown rice, courgettes and red onions with mayo What about a waldorf salad too?
  5. We're using this. It's been fine apart from when we had a problem caller and it was rather difficult to contact aol and then get them to understand what we were talking about as those calls do go to the Indian call center.
  6. We're just about to get our 3rd lot of rescue hens. None of ours have ever perched they all cuddled up in a nest box or cat box at night time. As exbatts generally have softer shelled eggs than "normal" chickens we crush and bake all of our egg shells to give them calcium back (you can buy special calcium supplements though) and we also always have a cabbage hanging in the run for extra vitamins and to help absorb the calcium. Sweetcorn and mealworms are our treats of choice at the moment. Our fences are only 4 foot 6 inches high and non of our hens have ever been next door - even the very good flyers that we hatched last year. Exbatts don't tend to have very strong bones so we find ours are the least likely to be found in high places. We have had 2 trips to the vet in 3 years, one hen had a chest infection that came on not long after release but it wasn’t terribly expensive, antibiotics, and a couple of injections and we currently have a hen that has reoccurring peritonitis from internally laying shell-less eggs. Our exbatt ladies are the friendliest and most companionable of all of our hens. We’ve found a huge difference between them and our other chickens, they are always available to "help" whatever you are doing and ours tend to follow us about and can be found in the kitchen sitting comfortably beside the cooker or watching tv in the lounge with our son

  12. We were trying to adopt and were "quietly" informed that if we worked full time we were very unlikely to be approved by the panel. I don't know if that is the same case for fostering though
