  1. copy of my post from the long thread.. 21st July 2006 I wasnt sure where to post this, I have just received a written reply from my MP in the post this morning. copy here.. if its too tiny to read it says.. I acknowledge receipt of your communication in relation to the plight of racing greyhounds. Sadly this is not a new situation although quite clearly the situation as described in the press is horrific. In fact as long ago as 1990 the Home Affairs Select Committee, of which I was at that time a member, produced a report on the financing of greyhound racing and indicated measures that needed to be taken to protect the welfare of the animals used in the sport. Since that time regrettably little action has been taken by any administration and its is my personal view that far too little money generated by the practice of racing greyhounds is ploughed back into the welfare of the animals. It is also a fact that far too many animals are bred, many are not suited to the purpose for which they are bred and, therefore, significant numbers are destroyed. At the other end of the career there is a limit to the number of retired racing greyhounds that can be accommodated by the excellent charities that have been set up for that purpose. The net result is that significant numbers of retired greyhounds are indeed slaughtered. This is an issue that clearly has to be addressed. It was raised during the passage of the Animal Welfare Bill by the opposition and although at that time the Government gave it scant priority I am pleased to note that since the publication of the article in the press the Minister, Ben Bradshaw, has indicated a willingness to re-visit the whole subject. Let us hope that real progress can now be made. With my best wishes. Yours sincerely ROGER GALE MP
  2. Today I am mostly making a Vegan Birthday cake - I started to make two in case I messed up the first one, but surprisingly enough the first one came out so good, we are awaiting the second one cooling on the racks until I can ice that one, and we can scoff it down later today I didnt realise baking cakes was so exhausting
  3. Id do both too. In answer to Princess C, as I understood its a Govt inquiry , who have also called for the BGRB to also hold its own inquiry, as Melp posted. Although I could be wrong. I thought the inquiry was to be headed by B. Bradshaw.
  4. Hi Kelli, Here is what I sent, I plaguerised it from someone else's letter as a guideline and added my own bits as well..... hope it helps... Dear I am sure that by now you are aware of the reports in the newspapers originally printed in the Sunday Times of the Slaughter of 10,000 racing Greyhounds carried out by Mr David Smith in Co. Durham. Since the original printing on Sunday, there have been many news stories on this issue including Radio phone-ins. I understand that an inquiry is to be held. As a person who is involved in Greyhound rescue I am grateful to the Sunday Times for highlighting the horror that these beautiful creatures had to endure because an industry had finished with them. This individuals actions are indefensible, but I have to say that the Greyhound Racing Industry pretending that it is unaware that this goes on is unbelievable. The dogs came from registered tracks , running under NGRC rules, and therefore each and every one of the greyhounds is traceable back to their owners and trainers. Where do they think the dogs go to? The Industry turns a blind eye whilst this has gone on for years. I am writing to ask you to help with the fight to get Greyhound Racing Banned, The United Kingdom should stand up and oppose a so called 'sport' which thinks nothing of disposing of a minimum of 10,000 dogs a year. The true figure I would imagine would truly shock the nation. Yours sincerely obviously edit and add to suit yourself, I had a good response and I pinched it in the first place.
  5. I just heard loud squeaking coming from the utility room rushed in to investigate...... it was my ecoballs they have taken to squeaking in the washing machine apparantly

  9. People of Kent - Lil has given a storm warning - she is panting and panicking - there must be a storm brewing - she is never ever wrong. Poor Lil
  10. I agree with Pingu except for the highjacking by AR, from what Ive heard a lot of AR people that arent usually involved with Greyhound campaigning are totally outraged by the news in the Times etc, I know they also would like to join the march but not with any other purpose other than to support the cause. Also along the lines of AR marches - people from various spectrums within the umbrella term of 'Animal Rights' come together for marches whatever their view points, A good example of which, is the Protests at Dover Docks against the reintroduction of Export of live calves, people who come from very different angles on this have no problems standing side by side eg. Compassion in World Farming (who are welfarists and campaign for better conditions for farmed animals ) along with People who are vegan and totally oppose the slaughter of animals for meat fullstop - without taking this off topic and into the realms of an AR discussion, my point is - that all sides wanting to make a stand about the issues surrounding the Slaughter of Greyhounds can surely get together, whether they are for imposed welfare standards or a total ban within Greyhound Racing. Me - Im with Greyhound Action and for a total ban, but would join in as 'me' and not an organisation. Here is where the LACS stand - I personally wish they would lend full support to an outright ban, but thats me I guess. LACS
