Happylittlegreensquirrel
Our most challenging case to date involves 6 owned dogs , 2 goats and a 4 chickens living in poor conditions . All of the six dogs have skin problems that will require months of treatment , they are riddled with parasites and there are multiple welfare issues 4 chickens are living in this wire cage to "keep them safe" the family previously had 10 chickens, six of whom have been killed by dogs. We are assisting with repairs to a existing coop onsite and providing assistance to build a secure run. We have impressed upon them that this is a totally unacceptable environment for chickens. two goats living at the house also have lice which the family had been treating with a powder , they could offer the vet no explanation as to why they had not treated the dogs The household consists of 2 adults and a small child all living in very very basic accommodation with these animals , our vet spoke with them at length about the animals health and the zoonotic risks to them especially the child as she was playing in the mud outside which is contaminated with animal waste. The said she was healthy and had only been sick once when she had to go to hospital to have ticks removed from her ears All that said there does not seem to any intent to be cruel on their part , just a total and utter lack of understanding of what is an appropriate living environment for the animals and indeed themselves. We are visiting daily to administer medication and provide ongoing reenforcement of our messages. Like I say a very challenging and complex case , I know legally things stand very differently here ( there are no animal welfare laws ) but wondered if anyone has had a similar set of issues in the UK ? Yantan
Poor animals But as you say Sam it's ignorance. When they see the condition of the animals improving it will reinforce the message you intend to get over to them. I haven't yet sorted some flea treatment out for you (sorry, building work going on here and it's diverted my attention) but is there something else you might prefer to help these particular animals out and I'll get an order off asap? Hollysdad
This is going to take a long time to deal with and will be a major drain on our resources both money and time. We will do everything we can to fix these
gooster
What a sad situation. I still need to find the spot on we bought for Shara - will try and do that this weekend We do have a bottle of Malaseb as well - it is probably well out of date as I can't remember when we got it, so not sure if that would be any use, but if you want it, you are more than welcome to it
Happylittlegreensquirrel
Update Things are looking a lot more positive now although we still have a long way to go yet With our support the family are making changes and the chickens are now living in a chicken coop , we have sprayed the entire inside of the house with insecticide and think we have killed off the flea and parasite colony that was living there and reinfecting the dogs The family have started to tidy up both inside and outside and remove rubbish which is a real step change and most importantly the dogs them selves have really started to show improvement and are responding really well to the treatment plan Ethel 12th June 2013 Ethel 29th June 2013 Sam
