Fee Posted May 27, 2009 Report Share Posted May 27, 2009 Joe is 13-14 year old, Lab X Collie who is in an Oldies Club foster home in Twickenham, Middlesex. He came into our care because his previous owners decided they no longer wanted him. As you can see, he is a stunningly beautiful boy with a long, fluffy sandy/grey coat. Joe settled into his foster home within 24 hours and he has quickly shown that he is a gentle, loving, placid and sweet-natured old boy with a sparkle in his eyes! He is fantastic with dogs and would be happy to live with them. Joe is currently being fostered with a 2 year old Labrador male and a female terrier mixed breed. He likes to play gently and is also friendly with dogs in the park. He’s also fantastic with cats. He takes no notice of them and is not bothered if they brush up against him! He could easily live with cats and is currently living with two. In his foster home, Joe has met children of 7 years and above and he’s been excellent with them. He is very placid and gentle and has not shown any aggression. He is quite fragile though, and almost deaf, so it would not be fair on him to be with very young children. Joe enjoys the company of his foster carer’s 11 year old son. Joe is as good as gold on walks and doesn’t pull on the lead. He walks slowly and is happy to potter off the lead while you walk around in the park. You need to keep an eye on him as he can’t hear you when you call, but he doesn’t go far. He can’t do more than ½ hour at a time though and you can’t expect to get anywhere in a hurry! Joe is great in the car but you need to lift him in and out, or use a ramp. You need to stop him jumping out, as if he does he will collapse. Joe’s favourite pastimes are sleeping, playing with other dogs, being close to you and following you. He loves relaxed walks, and resting in the garden. He also loves a tummy rub! No sounds particularly frighten him as he can’t hear well, but you do need to let him know you are there gently and not make sudden, loud movements which would make him jump. Joe enjoys having company but his foster carer feels he would be fine to be left alone for a few hours as he sleeps quite a lot. His foster carer describes Joe’s ideal home: Joe is a perfect family dog and could live with gentle children aged 11 yrs and above, as long as he was not expected to play or run around. He would be ideal for a retired person/couple who only took short walks, were around in the day and lived a relatively quiet life. He would enjoy the company of another dog and would be absolutely fine with cats or any other livestock. He does go upstairs but finds it a little tricky to get back down, so I would say that he couldn’t live anywhere where he had to negotiate steps to get around. Joe loves a garden and needs easy access to one to do his business. Joe needs daily grooming to prevent becoming matted. Joe has been vet-checked since coming into our care and he is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and worm- and flea-treated. He has arthritis in his joints, particularly in his front legs and some in his hips. He is fine but it does affect his walking and movement, which is slow. However, he has been on anti-inflammatory pills for the last 10 days which seem to have improved his mobility and he can now enjoy little bursts of running in the park with the other dogs. He will probably need this medication daily for the rest of his life, along with a Glucosamine treatment (tablet/powder). This is very easy to administer as he will eat anything you put in his food. Joe is rather overweight, so he will need a senior/light diet and continued gentle exercise which will, in turn, aid his arthritis. Joe is also pretty deaf. The vet said the condition of his teeth and heart were nothing unusual for a dog of his age. In summary, his foster carer tells us: Joe is a wonderful dog. A true gentleman. Everyone who meets him is charmed by him. He is like a big, fluffy teddy bear. He is clean in the house and well mannered. He may not have many years ahead of him but every day is special and he has been a joy to foster. —————- If you are interested in Joe, please refer to our Adoption Procedures for information about the adoption process.
