EGAR
I spent all day today at the GP and then at Portiuncal (sp) hospital in Ballinasloe with my son. He got up this morning, was in great form, took two steps and refused to walk any further, he complained about pains in the knee. Since he is 4 years old and has never ever been seriously ill, I took him straight to the GP and then on to the hospital. After xrays, urine and blood samples and waiting for hours and hours .... the diagnosis was IHS. I have never heard of it but I googled it and I don't like what I see. Has anyone had any experience with this condition? He is on Brufen Paedeatric 3x a day and I was told it should clear up in 14 days or *so*. He is not putting ANY weight on it whatsoever (right leg) but doesn't seem to be trouble moving the leg when he lies down. Xray shows fluid in the hip joint. Any input? Brodies Mum
My niece had this 20 years ago. They had her on bed rest and traction. She has never had it recur again. She was about 5 when it came on, very suddenly and was in hospital for a week and off school for about 3 weeks. SHe is a Mum herself twice over and as I said never caused her anymore problems. Hope he feels better soon. Alison
EGAR
Thank you, it really scared me since he has a portwine stain birthmark on this leg as well which we are checking at the specialist every 3 months. I have never heard of IHS before...
Brodies Mum
Our kids are really precious to us and it is scary when they are not well. Over the years with my daughter (who has Spina Bifida) I have learnt to question everything and if you need to go and see your GP and get them to explain it all. It is hard enough having one member of the family poorly but I know at times I have worried myself sick with the not knowing, when I know what we have to face it seems easier. Hope that makes sense. Sending lots of healing thoughts.

mikaela
Two out of my three boys have had this. My eldest had it drained but when they eventually did it there was no fluid left. My youngest had a bad virus and also developed IHS both suffered no lasting effects from it. My eldest who is now 22 did have it twice so do watch out if he complains of the same symptons again. I am sure they dont drain the fluid now but not 100% on that. to your little man.
EGAR
Thanks, Mikaela! Yes, they told me they used to drain the fluid with a syringe and I am very glad he didn't have to go through that! He is taking it easy and loves taking the Brufen liquid, he thinks it's a sweet . Dog Rescue Lover
Hi. I was diagnosed with IHS when I was 11. I had complete rest for about 4 weeks and it still didn't go away. Long story short, after finally being referred to a specialist, I was eventually diagnosed with a slipped epiphysis. I had to have an operation to pin my femur back in place. I'm not saying this is what your son has, but if the pain doesn't go away with total rest, keep nagging at your doctor for a referral to a specialist. EGAR
Thank you, he walked a few steps and he seems to be in no pain. I hope it will disappear as fast as it came but if not then I will raise hell to get him to a specialist.

I would just collapse on the floor. I hope it soon clears up for him.
