Puppy Lead Training And Barking When Socialising...

My friends housemate recently bought (I know!!) a chihuahua puppy who is now about 12 weeks old and up to date with vaccs, so they met my friends mums dog to see how Talulah (the chi pup) would get on.

Talulah barked the whole time and seemed very anxious, so they took her back home - but my friends mums dog is very active and darted about, so it must be quite daunting when you're a young pup and never seen another dog like that before..

Im thinking maybe its worth trying her to meet one of mine, Tess, who is a bit bumbly, but incredibly gentle and will not particularly advance to meet the pup, so this might be easier - what do you think? Also, do you think this will go better at the pups own house, so she feels less anxious?

Secondly, when she is on the lead she springs around like a cat would on a lead, very unhappy and wont go anywhere on it - should I suggest they just perservere in small doses with lots of treats for good on lead behaviour?

My friends housemate does want to take her to puppy training classes, and I think there are still classes in Widcombe in Bath (we are in Bath) and can find out when I go to the dogs home on Sunday, but wondered if anyone knew in advance of Sunday that could help me with when their classes are please?

Thank you in advance - and sorry if I have duplicated queries from anyone else with their dog xx

Ensure she goes to reputable puppy classes, try to choose from www.apdt.co.uk or www.puppyschool.co.uk . You don't want any where there is boisterous, free for all play, pups need to interact off lead but this should be with carefully chosen pups within the class :) Book up quickly as the spaces do go fast usually.

Bad puppy class is worse than no puppy class.

Lead walking - practise plenty at home, use food treats to lure along at first - as the chi will be tiny, you can use perhaps some tasty treat smeared on the back of a wooden spoon to avoid bending too much!

Puppy class will give her confidence with other dogs and give owner support too - if she meets other dogs beforehand, perhaps keep them on lead to start with, and her off lead just so the situation can be gauged effectively. If she tries to hide under a chair, let her - it's very important she comes out in her own time.

Good luck!

here here - excellent advice :)

just add - bumbly tess sounds a good idea, on leads first (both dogs) and i would suggest somewhere neutral at first too. if its "too much" for either dog just walk away in opposite directions - chill out, and try again.
