Catherine
I currently have a gsd foster dog with behavoural problems. She lunges and barks at people and dogs when on the lead. What is the best way to try and rectify this?
Abby
Have a look at this thread: Linky and maybe have a chat to the poster? Sounds like a very similar issue. There are lots of ays of dealing with this, but I would advise you look for an appropriate trainer / behaviourist to work with, depending on what approach you choose to try. Good luck
Ingrid
Catherine do you have any idea of her history ? What you are describing is typical of an unsocialised GSD. Lunging at people is a dangerous thing and could land her in serious trouble. How old is she ? As has been suggested you need a good behaviourist who understands the breed, GSDs are sensitive dogs who need firm and consistant but kind handling. redditchlady
Have you spoken to the rescue/person you are fostering her for? As for the lunging/barking it could be a number of things, one of them like Ingrid said is lack of socialisation. I have had GSDs for a long time now. They aren't the easiest of dogs sometimes, but with set guidelines of what is acceptable and what isn't they are great dogs to have. Good luck with sorting her out. Ingrid
Have you tried her with a head collar (if the rescue allow it), it gives far better control, but from experience I would still keep a standard collar and one her for safety (I've had a head collar snap on me). Do you have any idea what she is like off lead ? Not suggesting for one moment that you try her off but something I found with my present boy is that he is far more relaxed off lead then on, but he is still under my full control. I would still say advice from a professional who can see her is your best course of action
