I'm in a similar situation at the moment, my OH's dad has just passed away and we have been estranged from him for a long time for various reasons. On one hand I am very sorry but like you I'm not upset. You can only offer to do things for him but if he refuses just let him know you are there and will help if he wants. Some people fare better doing it all alone others need a lot of help. Grief is such a personal thing and there really isn't a right or wrong way to do things.
