  1. Mine vary by 5 - 6 pounds per day. I will be 8 5ish in the morning and 8 10ish by bedtime. I don't usually weigh myself that often I have been over the past week or so cos I was suspicious about the scales. 'How could I change that much over night?' I thought. So I kept doing it and sure enough my weight does vary by 5 -6 pounds. Every morning I weight 5- 6 pounds less than I did when I went to bed (I haven't been wetting the bed I promise )
  2. My OH agrees with you He thinks BMI is a load of rubbish and he doesn't use it with his athletes.
  3. That's another thing that you can get conflicting info about. Some books say that muscle weighs more than fat and others say it weighs about the same. (I wish they would just decide one way or the other) If the difference in BMI is likely to be of significance I wonder why they don't have seperate guidelines for males and females, like they do with body fat?
  4. Oh I see. They think they look better that way. Sorry I thought you meant it was actually a recommendation that women should be lower than men.
  5. I can't find any seperate parameters for men and women. I did find three different sets of general guidelines (below), though they are almost identical. From a weight loss site: What Your BMI Calculation Means Under 18.5* Underweight 18.5* - 25 Healthy Weight 25 - 30 Overweight 30 - 40 Obese Over 40 Severely obese * There are two different ranges for healthy BMI put forward by different, but respected, sources. The British Nutrition Foundation, for example, gives 20-25 as healthy range and less than 20 as underweight. The Food Standards Agency's BMI calculator gives 18.5-25 as healthy and less than 18.5 as underweight. And from NHS Direct The BMI weight ranges, as set out by the World Health Organisation (WHO), are outlined below. If your BMI is less than 18.4, you're underweight for your height. If your BMI is between 18.5 and 24.9, you're an ideal weight for your height. If your BMI is between 25 and 29.9, you're over the ideal weight for your height. If your BMI is between 30 and 39.9, you're obese. If your BMI is over 40, you're very obese. It varies for some people, such as certain athletes who may weigh more than average but still be 'healthy'. For example, a big rugby player may be fit and very muscular but the regular BMI calculator doesn't take into consideration the fact that person's 'excess weight' isn't excess at all... it is muscle that they have because of the type of sport that they play... anyway I digress The body fat % ranges are very different for men and women (and also depends on age). The chart here in the Running Made Easy book says that healthy body fat for women is: Age 20 - 39 21 - 33% Age 40 - 59 23 - 34% Age 60 - 79 24 - 36% And blokes... 9 - 20% 12 - 22% 14 - 25% The chart that used to be up at the gym used to be different to that. I remember because I was about 18% and that was within the healthy range displayed at the time. Anyway will stop going on about it now (sorry but I find it dead interesting).
  6. That's ok I've spent 8 years with someone who uses this kind of stuff/info every day. That's the only reason I know the difference between some of these bits and bobs.
  7. Yes BMI is a weight/ height ratio, an approximation of a healthy weight range depending on your height. I am measuring my body fat %. I want to know how much of my body is made up of fat and I want to reduce this slightly to a healthier amount (mostly by exercising so that I have more muscle tone).
  8. Sorry, haven't explained myself very well and can't edit the post above. A healthy BMI is roughly within the range of 19 - 25 What I mean is if you want to check your BMI you can use the info on that linky there. You will need to know your height and weight in order to work it out.
  9. Yes that probably is fine (it depends on your height) If you want to check it there is a calculator here and instructions about how to work it out manually if you want to BBC Site What confused you?
  10. I have made some enquiries and I am now in touch with a contact from the adoption organisation where Genie came from (who will also be going to the 20th birthday party). They are happy to pass on birthday wishes to Genie. I am going to send something nearer the time. Does anyone else want to? I am happy to coordinate something.
  11. WD to everyone this week. I am back to the beginning with 27.1% body fat. TBH our scales make no sense and I think I will have to wait a few weeks to see any sort of consistant difference. Will report back in 2 weeks
  12. I like her I want to send her a birthday card. I hope my Milly Big Ears can live that long ... and maybe by then I will have a house big enough that she can have her own bedroom
  13. In the past I would get quite upset about it. I deliberately ignore it these days. If there is fighting going on I tend not to log in for a while because I can't be bothered with it and don't want to read about it. It happens on all types of forums I think. I use forums about dogs, bands, allotments and loads of other stuff. I do think it is worse on the rescue ones though.
  14. I am 5 ft 3 and around 8st 9. I know that doesn't sound alot but I have a very small frame. If I go past 8st 11ish I get a double chin, a spare tyre and 2 extra bum bits. Until about a year ago I was always 8st - 8st 2 or thereabouts.
  15. Just back from a weekend in London. Saturday was a food nightmare. Service station lunch, followed by 2 hr stint in cup cake cafe at Covent Garden, trying to stay warm whilst waiting for our table at *yuck* TGI Fridays. Ate 3 hrs later than they said we would. They were out of most veggie options so I was left with slabs of cheese in a tortilla with some wierd hard rice congealed into clumps. (I was able to throw clumps into the air and catch at least 10 times without them breaking up and I did demonstrate this to the manager who agreed not to charge me...) anyway so service station food, cupcakes and slabs of cheese. Felt awful this morning. Today was better. We went to Wagamama's. I had a fab salad that was full of good things and very tasty. Also had vegetable dumplings with ginger dressing mmmmmmmmm.
  16. Can't make that new date unfortunately cos I'm not allowed time off work then.
  17. I weigh almost the same. Lost half a pound so I'm now 8st 8.3 not 8st 8.10 *big wows*. More importantly my body fat has decreased. It was 27.1 %. It is now 25.6%
  18. Well I think nuts are good for a 'healthier' eating plan as a natural snack (better than sweets/choc/crisps) but for weight loss I don't know? I guess anything high in calories isn't ideal in that case, whether it be eating choc cake or something natural...
  19. Nuts are not completely bad. They contain good fats, but as you point out they also contain saturates. I'd eat them in small quantities only so that I get the benefits of the good fats without too much of the saturates.
  20. Do you measure your body fat at the same time each week? The reason I ask is my body fat can vary by 2% during the day, and my weight by as much as 4 lbs. We bought some scales for the house last week and I have been a bit sceptical about them, hence keep going on them alot to check out my theories about them being pants.
  21. Ok I have my measurements now. 8st 8lbs. BMI 21.4 Body fat 27.1 I don't want to shrink. I just want to reduce the body fat down to around 20% like it used to be (much healthier). I will do this by eating less cr@p and doing some exercise. I will probably weigh about the same at the end of it. The difference will be that I have more muscle and less fat, hence stronger and healthier and no longer out of breath going up the stairs (which I find embarassing particularly since I am only 28). I will make myself one of those twiddly things to put in my signature
  22. My breakfast was norty. I went to the bakery for a loaf and came out with a maple pecan danish. I had chick pea salad for lunch. Dinner is somekind of noodle salad that I will invent. OH has tuna steak with it. I will be adding soybeans to mine instead.
  23. Eye ham inn trubul. Eye hav hadd ay durteee prowtest. Mye Dadd wenttowt wivowt mee agen. Thairfore eye promptlee pizzed upp hiz snowbord ann intew hiz shooooz. Roar-ee
