JESS

Little Jess is a 5 year old ex-racing greyhound girl who’s owner has brought her to us to find her a lovely retirement home. She worked very hard in her racing days and now really deserves her sofa. Jess is an elegant little girl with a white coat and black patches, and a very pretty face.

Jess was well fed and looked after during her racing days, but sadly wasn’t used to getting much love and affection – when she first came to us she didn’t know what affection was and was quite withdrawn into herself. It’s taken her a little while to learn that people can give gentle love, but she is really starting to open up now. She is becoming less suspicious and is starting to come up to people and take treats from their hands.

Once you gain her trust, however, Jess is a real sweetheart and is both affectionate and friendly. She adores her head rubs and has the greyhoundy habit of chattering her teeth when you’ve hit a good spot. It’s obvious all this is still very new to her and she is a bit overwhelmed, but you can also see that she’s trying her best to adjust. Teaching this girl about the big wide world is sure to be a very rewarding experience, she will give back tenfold what she receives.

Dear Jess was recently homed (as Spice) but has been returned to us as she was acting possessively over her bed and food. However Jess has been good as gold since coming to her foster home and hasn’t put a paw wrong since one small grumble on the very first day. She had also been an angel in kennels, and we think her defensive behaviour was brought on by the stress of changing from kennels to a home environment. Sometimes it takes hounds a little while to settle in and they often do better if firm boundaries are put in place from the beginning. Because of this history, however, we feel Jess would do best in a calm, dog-experienced home without young children. If told ‘no’ from day one Jess is a wonderful little girl and we are just now starting to see her true potential.

Jess is sharing her foster home with 2 other greyhounds (1 male, 1 female), and they are a huge help to her right now. She would do very well in a home with another settled dog already present who can continue to show her how the home life works. We are also hoping that as she loosens up more, she will start to play and would like another canine friend to play with. Jess has bonded well with her doggie housemates, and has no problems sharing her bed with them. She is also happy to do food bowl swaps during mealtime. She is clean in the house, letting you know when she wants to go out and is ok to be left with other dogs for company.

Out on walks, Jess behaves perfectly on the lead and is easy as pie to walk. She never pulls and has been great with the other dogs she has met so far. She recently took part in a Greyhound Walk and loved being around all the other greyhounds. She is an inquisitive girlie and likes to explore new areas.

This darling girl does still need work on her low confidence as she can still be quite unsure in new situations, but she is learning at a steady pace. She is fast picking up all the traits of her greyhound housemates – including greeting her fosterer with a ‘song’ in the morning! She also knows basic commands such as ‘down’, ‘come’ and ‘bed’ and is happy to do what is asked of her. She has also learned to wait patiently for her food and will only start eating when told so by her fosterer. Jess is definitely a dog that thrives when given boundaries, and can become stressed and anxious if she doesn’t know what to do. She is very eager to learn, however, and in the right kind of home this little girl will be a real gem.

**UPDATE: FEBRUARY 2011**

Sweet little Jess is continuing to adjust nicely to her foster home while she waits to be adopted. She enjoys having the other greyhounds for company, and has settled nicely into her fosterer’s routine.

As you can see, one of her favourite activities is sleeping! Jess is sure to make a perfect forever friend for the right person.

**UPDATE: MARCH 2011**

Dear Jess is still waiting for her forever sofa, but she is doing so well in her foster home. It’s a joy to see this little girl open up and relax in her surroundings, as she was so untrusting and withdrawn when we first took her in.

Jess is a completely different dog now to when we first got her. She is learning to play chase in the garden with her greyhound foster brother and sister, and takes great joy from being both the chase-r and the chase-e. She is relaxed beautifully in the house and now loves nothing more than to flip over on her back in a classic hound ‘roaching’ pose!

Jess shares her space amiably with her two hound friends, and has never once grumbled about it. She loves being with other greyhounds and we feel a home with another hound already present would be her absolute ideal. Jess hasn’t yet met a lot of other breeds of dog when out on walks, but has been polite and mannerly with all the dogs she has met. She frequently joins her fosterer on greyhound group walks and absolutely loves meeting all the other hounds. It gives her confidence when she is surrounded by them.

Jess is sure to be a beautiful addition to the right family. Routine is key for this girlie and she can become stressed and anxious without it. Once the trust is built up, however, Jess is a fab, loyal girl who still has so much potential waiting to be unlocked.
