  1. If the bungs are anything like the ones built in Fife between the motorway and the mining works it will look like colditz.

Don't accept anybody's word for anything. They will say what needs to be said and change it later , when it is too late to stop it.

Nice of them to take responsibility for any flooding, but you have to the mess and inconvenience.

Don't rely on officials to look after your interest , you need a protest group.

I agree. Trust no-one at this stage; this is how it starts, all nicey-nicey and reasonable.

You're concerned for your environment and they're concerned about money - and we know who holds more power. You do need a local action group, as blackmagic says.

  2. Sorry to anyone who needs sympathy, I haven't read back. We got a pamphlet in the post earlier, informing us that the local farmers and landowners are conducting an evaluation of a surface coal mining scheme, which will encompass about five fields, two of which are directly behind our gardens! I would put in a screaming smilie, but I can't get them to work. I can't start to imagine the noise, the dust etc...not to mention the loss of habitat for the skylarks who nest in the field, and the lovely mature trees that border it. I now have a thumping headache and I feel sick.

Well you won't get much sympathy from the landowners and farmers who stand to gain hugely from the sale or leasing of this land, but what does your local council (Parish?) have to say about it? Sorry, I don't know what the equivalent is in England, but up here, our Community Council would be taking the lead in monitoring (and probably opposing) proposals such as this.

I'd get in touch with them first and ask what they intend to do, and see whether you can help enlist local support. I assume your neighbours will all be as upset as you. It's always essential to act quickly before a pro-landowner/farmer planning department gives this sort of thing the green light.

There is of course the possibility that some locals may welcome it - you'd have to find out how many jobs it would provide, and how much coal would be removed over what period of time, and so on - so that you have the stats to support any objections.

    Good luck :GroupHug:

  3. Thanks for the encouraging words folks..everything just seems to have heaped up on top of me, not helped by the fact that I'm on my own for over nine hours a day from when my OH goes to work to him coming home. It seems strange, I live on a small housing estate and you'd think there would be plenty of people around but it's like a ghost ship...I'm lucky if I see a couple of people to say hello to when I'm walking Rosie. Too much introspection I think.

Lesley, whilst I appreciate your comments, sadly the place I'm likely to be in a years time is probably going to be worse than now as none of my many and varied health issues are curable and we are likely to be even more broke! Ah well, plenty of folks worse off than me I guess.

I hope one of the sightings of Bones leads to her being caught Owl (I wonder why they gave such a pretty dog such a plain name?)

I do think the solitary life ain't all it's cracked up to be , Suzeanna. I know when I worked full-time, or when I was at home (working even harder) with my four children, I used to long for "alone time" - but if you have no means of occupying yourself it's a long day. I don't think modern life lends itself to chats over the garden fence so much these days - if you want company you often need to seek it out. :GroupHug:

Are there no free groups in your area? Nothing you fancy joining? I'm not much of a joiner myself, mind you, so hardly one to advise others!

  4. Oh, thank you all - and thank you, Suzeanna, for not revealing my age. It's a Very Big Birthday,

Heck, who cares? I am 65! but no woolly twinsets and pearls for me. I am getting a hen house and a guinea pig hutch. The guinea pigs and hens are almost organised.

I also had a card and a huge pack of creme eggs from Bonnie and the cats. Bonnie writes very well for a cavalier.

    Liz.

  5. I am at mums - this is the worst I have ever seen her - tbh had she not already got an appointment first thing to see the consultant I think I'd have rung for a bed for her, as it is I wouldn't be surprised if they decide to admit her tomorrow. She definately needs blood shes very weak, trembly, in a lot of discomfort from all her mouth and throat ulcers and barely able to swallow liquids and even liquids cause her pain so shes not been eating just having fortisip. For once shes even saying she thinks she needs to be in hospital so they can sort her out - which is a clear sign that she really isnt well, I have my doubts about her being able to walk from the car to the chemo ward so will be looking for a wheelchair when we get there.

Aw, your poor mum, Snow. I hope they manage to make her more comfortable tomorrow. Thinking of you both.

  6. Done it

The director I wanted to hand it in to wasn't in today, so had to give it to the other director. He asked me why I was leaving, so I told him straight. I explained I am not a commercial person and will not give spex to someone who doesn't need them or doesn't want them. I will not be told I am not capable of doing my job just because my conversion is going through a bad patch.

Never realised how well liked amongst the other staff I was though until today! Everyone is really surprised and have said they'll miss me! Last day i think will be 14th may.

    Well done! :flowers:

The fact that you'll be missed is a lovely, positive thing to take from this experience. Wishing you all the best for the future!

My sister had a baby boy sometime between last night and 7am this morning! She had to have a c-section as he was breech, but her and babes are doing fine. Can anyone suggest things to help her recovery?

    Xxx

Congratulations to you all! :flowers: As for recovery aids...big old-lady pants, loose-fitting pull-on trousers, some decent ready meals for their freezer, and practical help with cleaning, washing, housework?

    Rant Warning!

Bloody council! I took possession of my brother's old 3 piece suite on the 21st Dec (it's not very old and in immaculate condition, far superior to my old 17 year old suite.)

Anyway I went online that day and booked a bulky removal with the local council. The site was pants and wouldn't let me pay with my Visa debit card so I had to take the "we will call you to take payment over the phone" option. I gave them specific times as to when the best times were to call. Although I have been away in Scotland Ruby was here and swears no one has phoned and that she only went out with Archie at the times I had specified when no one would be here.

Realising that they are supposed to come tomorrow and no payment has yet been made I phoned them this morning. I got a surly woman who's attitude got my back up right away. Cutting a long story short she was adamant they had phoned and getting no reply they had cancelled the removal! I'll bet they only phoned once and didn't try again rolleyes.gif

The next available date is the 24th January. I couldn't believe it. We have had the old suite sitting in the garden all over Christmas and new year and it looks like some chav household. I was so mad - mostly because of her couldn't-care-less attitude I told her not to bother re-booking it. But I have cut my nose off to spite my face and now need to find some nice person with a van who will run it to the tip for me rolleyes.gif

I suppose if it's been sitting in the garden for weeks it will be too far gone to offer on Freecycle?

Goodness knows what they charge, but I found this company below on Gumtree (and - cruelly - had to cut and paste for the spelling alone... )

  9. So sorry, Jazz. Thinking of you :GroupHug:

We walked on the little beach at Aberdour today - it was very busy! Cold but bright, so really blew the cobwebs away, and Bonnie had a good run.

There were the usual heroic (mad) Ne'erday swimmers...brr...I wasn't among them.

  10. Happy Hogmanay and a Guid New Year to you all for later. :flowers: May 2012 be a healthy one for you and your pets.

:GroupHug: to all the injured/ill people - get well soon.

Rowan Cat has been on insulin for a week now and is looking like his old self. Ok, we can't go anywhere for the rest of his life  - injections twice daily - but that's a small price to pay. I thought we were losing him last week, and it's too soon; he's only 13. I am so relieved.

  11. Not feeling so feeble this afternoon. Collected Rowan from the veterinary hospital at noon, and he's like a new cat already, after 3 shots of insulin.

My husband is having to do the injections for now since I had an op on my finger last week, but it was fine and I'm sure we'll get used to it soon. Rowan seems completely unconcerned about it all, which helps.

My heart goes out to all of you who are coping with loss today. :GroupHug:

  12. I'm rarely on here these days, but wanted to say I'm sorry to hear of Polly's passing Owl, though you did make me smile with that lovely image of the organised Puli coup.

Also sad to hear that Marion has lost a treasured friend. :GroupHug:

It's been a funny old year for us; we've finally moved back to Scotland, acquired a house with a decent garden, welcomed the first grandchild and were planning a relatively peaceful retirement with a few hens and some guinea pigs to add to the dog and cats - and the grandbaby whom we'll be minding part-time. However, my 13 year old cat Rowan has just been diagnosed with diabetes today (oops...yesterday) and I'm wondering how I will cope with twice-daily injections. It's pathetic, but I feel overwhelmed suddenly.

Happy Christmas to you all. I wish you peace and joy in whatever form it takes. I'll have chocolate and a nice glass of white, please, and maybe some of that wee Paulo Nutini on the Ipod.
