  1. I suppose my only 'rule' is a general expectation that people in the household will treat each other with respect and tolerance - and somehow it seems to work. On the whole I think children learn much more from example than they do from rules, and will treat others as they are treated themselves.

That sums it up for me. I don't have kids - but if and when I do, that's how I'd like to bring them up, though maybe I wouldn't use the word respect? More like be considerate, polite and thoughtful towards others - whatever their age and relationship to you - and be tolerant. I'll teach them good manners too, because my biggest pet hate is people not saying please and thank you (or cheers - the words don't matter to me, it's the intent) - so maybe I'm not as tolerant as I'd like to be  .

The word respect, well, it's a funny one for me. It puts my back up, as has connotations of subservience. makes me think, straight away, of teh phrase 'respecting your elders and 'betters' '. It's a phrase I personally really don't like. IMO, age shouldn't automatically mean a thing. It seems (to me anyway) no different that saying 'women must respect men'.

I believe in treating EVERYONE with politeness and decency, and make sure you actually listen to other people's opinions, but only truly respecting those who've proved them selves worthy. After all, people of all ages can be small minded bigots; age doesn't automaticaly equate to wisdom. Or a licence to forget common decency, tolerance and good manners.

But then, I guess it all depends on your definition of the word 'respect'...

  2. I think we need pics of them all and a poll... until then though, I say deerhound. Mr bro used to have one called Dave. He was fab. A great hairy horse of a dog, and very happy too. He lived on teh top of a moor and ran around like a mentalist all day. When not being a mentalist (and falling over his own legs), he roached on the kitchen rug, snoring like a pig. A very big pig

  3. I don't think it's meant to be taken too literally as in all mongrels = good and pure breeds = bad (he links to the SBT Clubs on Buster's website) :)

I am beginning to wonder if I read a different version of Roy Hattersely's article  I honestly don't get some of the criticism that has been levelled here

Roy is extolling the virtues of getting a rescue dog and we are all into promoting rescue aren't we  Whether or not we want a mongrel or pedigree I would hope that rescue would be the first port of call for anyone wishing to home a dog. I couldn't go to a breeder for a dog, whatever the make, when I know so many are in rescue. This is what I see the article as endorsing.

    What they did say :)

Wonder how he feels about breed specific legislation ??

Good point  .... *ray shuffles off putting her DNB hat on...*

  4. Just got a nice email from the Bristol Dog Warden Service explaining that they are actually trying to keep most parks as off-lead friendly, and welcome suggestions... though there is a thin-end-of-the-wedge worry there, I wouldn't say it's anything close to as potentially bad as the london one, so if you are gonna write to them, please bear this in mind.

Would a kind modly type mind amending my post to say that the big long list is areas EXCLUDED not INCLUDED, and delete the template letter as it doesn't really apply?

    Muppet. Me. Yes.

  5. Bristol Council are sneakily trying to ban exercising dogs offlead in pretty much every park in Bristol. I found this in a deep dark hidden corner of their website...

Please, please, please take a second and cut and paste the letter below to to Mr Bevan, the Dog Warden. (even if you dont live in Briz!) The more people do, the more likely it is that alternatives might be considered (such as actually targeting irresponsible muppets let their inadequately trained dogs run riot, cr*p everywhere and generally ‘cause nightmares for everyone else…) . If prescedent gets set in one area, it could soon be where you live next....

    Thanks very muchly…

My suggested email to make life easier, though feel free to write summat better:

    Dear Mr Bevan

I am mailing to state my objections to the proposed ‘dogs on lead’ legislation which is currently in consultation.

I object the idea of dogs being on lead at all times in many Bristol parks for the following reasons:

    Access

Not everyone can reach out of town parks. Older residents, the less able, people on low incomes, those who work, residents who can’t afford expensive public transport or to run a car – all will never be able to exercise their pets offlead. How is that fair?

    Welfare

Dogs simply won’t receive enough exercise, which in turn may lead to behavioural problems, alongside obesity and weight related illnesses. Imagine the backlash this will cause - not only as pets will suffer –welfare organisations such as the PDSA, RSPCA and Blue Cross will be crippled. It may even impact on the amount of dogs coming into rescue, as responsible owners who can’t cope may reel their pet would be happier and healthier in a different home.

    Cost

How much will putting into place and policing such a scheme cost me as a taxpayer? I’d much rather my money was spent on better services and facilities for local people, such as schools, cleaner streets, safer cyclepaths, accessible public toilets, reopening swimming pools, even dog training classes for low income families!

    Feasibility

How likely is it that unsociable dog owners will change their behaviour overnight? It appears to me that such a scheme would simply target responsible dog owners, whilst the underlying problem of irresponsible ownership remains.

I appreciate your talking the time to consider my opinion as a local resident. I have no objections to the proposed ‘no dogs in play areas’ and ‘anti-fouling’ schemes.

    Yours sincerely…
