  1. the bloody mirror made my blood boil this morning linky

i was compelled to write to them

    Dear Sir/Madam

i have just seen your article

    http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2009/12/26/our-present-to-help-george-7-rebuild-his-life-after-terrifying-attack-by-dog-115875-21923041/

and would like to congratulate you on undoing all the hard work done over the years by animal rescues and behaviourists in trying to persuade people not to give pets as presents, have you no idea how irresponsible this is, not just because of the fact that many animals become unwanted after christmas, but from a safety and social point of view.

Animals can and do become unsettled at this time of year decorations are up in the house, many visitors are calling, people are drunk with parties in full swing and funnily enough children are excitable and playing with new toys/games all of which can be terrifying to a dog.

The Mirror currently has a campaign against dangerous dogs and if the paper had done its homework (or even taken a look at some of their own devil dog headlines from recent years) it would see that a huge amount of serious incidents occur at social gatherings such as parties or barbecues or during the festive season, that is because large gatherings of people/children, loud music, the presence of alcohol and people leaving and entering premises at will, all serve to unsettle a dog.

Also if the mirror had done its homework and researched the breed of dog they have chosen they would also have found that the job of work that labradors have been bred to do for years involves retrieving game and therefore putting things in their mouths, as puppies they practice this by mouthing things including hands and fingers until they learn bite inhibition, this practice though perfectly normal could be detrimental to this childs recovery, not aid it. Labradors adorable as they are bear absolutely no resemblence to the cavalier the family previously felt was the right breed for them, so how on earth would you know if the family set up is suitable for one.

I would ask if this puppy was purchased from a responsible breeder in normal circumstances but as responsible breeders do not sell puppies as presents i really dont feel the need to.

I just hope that the Daily Miirror will be responsible for this puppies wellbeing for the rest of its life instead of relying on already overstretched rescues should it all go horribly wrong, and also that it has also provided access to proper training to both the dog and its family, as lack of knowledge or training is the most important factor in why dogs become dangerous, and its important to note that to have a well socialised and well adjusted dog, their owners also require training.

As you can probably tell, as a behaviourist and a legal advisor concerning dog law i am thoroughly disgusted at your actions, and especially your lack of knowledge of dogs and why things go wrong, What you have done has given out completely the wrong message to your readers and could play a part in future incidents occurring.

Getting a dog is a huge decision to make and every effort should be made to ensure that proper thought is given to breed and size, as well as the best way to introduce a dog to new surroundings, this is not accomplished by giving dogs as presents.

Given that you are running a high profile campaign which seems to target breeds rather than the actual cause of incidents, i sincerely hope your actions do not come back to bite you on the behind later.

I saw this one too...Who would be responsible if this did go horribly wrong. Would the Mirror hold a front page heading "the mirrors labrador christmas present to a recent dog attack victim aged just 7 who is still wary/nervous of dogs go horribly wrong"

  2. Our previous "golden chancellor" "no more boom and bust" Gordon. Who was never any good at maths (doesn't it show?)and brought the country to its knees is now backing the mirrors campaign to tackle dangerous dogs. But and a very big BUT.... He stopped short of agreeing to review the act.

The jib pulling corrupt robing moron....I'll stop there

Any way here is the article link

    HERE

The point at the bottom i recon are pretty good but wary of point 3.

  3. I disagree. Ellie Lawrensen didn't die because the police failed. She died because of irresponsible ownership and a law that failed. The police enforce the law, they don't write it.

As far as I can see, the police are not blaming the breed, the media are doing that! The police have merely stated what breed [type] the dog was.

I strongly agree with your reply here but wasn't the police informed about Kyle simpsons dog prior to the attack. Thats what i was refering too when i said the police failed.

  4. Whilst I agree with Roger that it would be helpful to keep dogs alive for behavioral examination, there are cases where that's just not possible. I think given the circumstances in this case, the police had no choice but to shoot the dog.

DNB have been asked to appear on BBC Breakfast. Given the kind of reaction those defending dogs recieve, I don't think so.

    Why not???

No need to loose your rag on there just speak sense. The only reason the public are reacting in this way is due to beeb propagander.

  5. What terrible news again.

I think we are seeing a repeat of Ellie Lawinsons case here. Because the police have failed again, their amnesty was unseccessful and failed to prevent this terrible tragedy they are turning the blame to the breed and again putting the fear off god in to people about the APBT.

  6. I know of three episodes where he uses a shock collar, the one already mentioned, one where he uses one on Daddy to train him to keep away from snakes and this one KOMO News the dog in question is about half way through the clip.

    I seen this one.

One of his dogs die from a snake bite and he want to avoid this happening to daddy.

I have opinions like every one else on every forum on the internet. Some people agree some don't and i don't know who is going to agree and who will disagree.

If no other training method worked i would rather give my dog a shock than see him lying on the floor dead from a snake bite.

  7. Jonathan Shaw: The Ministry of Justice’s court proceedings data for 2007 will not be available until autumn 2008.

So they claim more money on their expenses for a fitted kitchen in their second home than we earn in a year and it takes them this long to work out the figure? What are they all doing s******g their secretaries like prescott?

  8. Thanks sooo much for all the kind thoughts. I couldn't take Cap myself, my uncle did it. I feel really guilty because my uncle looks like he have cried all day and can't talk about it. We are having Cap crimated and berrying him along side Rip, his best friend.

I aint gonna hide the fact that i have been upset all day. :mecry: Today has been a very difficult day.

Thanks sooo much again for all the kind thoughts.

  9. Today we have had to make the dreaded decission to send poor cap to the bridge. He is 14 (15 on the 23rd March) and has struggled for a few weeks with his arthritis. Over the last week his breathing has got very heavy and we have been told by our vet that his lungs are filling with fluid. Today is going to be very very very hard but we know he is now suffering. He is not wagging his tail when he sees people and the look in his poor big brown eyes is soooo sad. :mecry:

Cap (avatar) has been with us since he was 6 1/2 weeks old when i was 13.

  10. Instead of applying only to attacks that take place in public, the Bill would also make attacks on private property a criminal offence;

Do any one know how this would affect guard dogs? My best friend has had 2 quad bikes solen at £5500 a time in addition to tens of gallons of red diesel, £1000s of tools, having his house broke in to and sentimental value items taken too. He now has 1 gsd and 2 border collies running loose in which have done a good job in keeping the theifs away for several months. Some thing our police have failed to do.

  11. I would like to thank every one who have joined the debate (although it was origionally about Victoria Stilwell). I have enjoyed this debate and i am not running away from it (wish i could continue). Unfortunately i am back to long hours at work now (after the festive holidays :beerchug: ) and will be unable to comment on a regular bases.

:flowers: :flowers: :flowers: :flowers: :flowers: To all :bigloveglass:

  12. I don't agree with establishing training classes/rules for certain breeds - if we are looking to fight BSL and improve dog ower responsibility and reduce the chance of the recent tragedy repeating itself, then I firmly believe we need to address this with all dog owners, regardless of the breed.

However I haven't once seen Rip and Cap say anywhere that he is happy for any dogs to be killed, let alone an entire breed wiped out. From reading his posts in this section, he is opposed to BSL like the rest of us and is supportive of DNB :flowers: I don't agree with the suggestion, but I understood he was suggesting that *rather* than an entire breed such as the rottie be added to the DDA a a banned breed, that there be certain things such as training set up to enable people to keep the breed responsibly. In the current climate of the media calling for rotties to be banned and with people wanting rid of their previously wonderful dogs, I thought he was trying to suggest an alternative to more breeds being banned.

As I said above, I don't personally agree with certain breeds being targeted for training/extra restrictions/rules etc. because to me that is still a form of BSL, even though not as severe as having the dogs killed, but I haven't seen anywhere that he would be happy for even one single dog to be killed because he/she was of a certain breed :flowers:

Thank you, i think you understand my view. My last post explains a little bit more.

I am trying to say exactly what you have said by there. If the government want to hit another breed with bsl i would rather see a system in which would allow responsible owners to keep their dogs. Not a repeat of 1991 (and ever since) where thousands of responsible owners are affected and thousands of dogs destroyed for the way they look.

  13. Either i have not explained my self properly or a few of you have miss understood. At the end of the day the government lay the law. They are not going to drop bsl all together because that would be like them saying "we have searced Iraq top to bottom, east to west and not found any weapons of mass destruction. We are bringing our troops home tomorrow." (hundreds of troops dead, tens of thousands of civilians dead and billions of pounds wasted). How stupid would this make them look after attacking them on fake dossiers for weapons of mass destruction.

I share the same views as all of you and thats why i post on the forum.

What i am trying to get across is, Our government might meet us half way where there is still a form of relaxed bsl in place together with our ideas but THEY ARE NOT going to drop bsl all together just yet. Dropping bsl all together would make them look like the idiots they are. (just like my comment above on Iraq). If they dropped bsl they would be massively criticised for all the innocent dogs that have been slaughtered through bsl. They are not going to allow that.

I completely agree with rumpoles comment on educating owners. This is the direction i have been pointing in. The classes i have mentioned i am pointing in the direction of educating the owner on the points you have mentioned and many, many more.

So some one agrees with part of my idea. :)

  14. Why should it only be made compulsory for certain breeds?? I'm sorry do we not have a Deed not Breed campaign going on? The idea is to punish the DEED not the breed, so why should I as a Rottweiler owner be made to do compulsory training and Mr Joe Bloggs next door who does not have a Rott can have the most ill manner anti social dog on the street? My Rott's are very well training dog ( by me BTW) so why should I be penalised because of my choice of breed type, not the best idea I think......

Please take note of my previous comment.

My view is bearing in mind our thick and dictating government too. They are not going to just accept "well i had a pitbull and it never bit any body". or after a certain breed attack "i've got that breed of dog dog which is a total softie. Blame the owner."

They are in a similar situation to John Majors goverrnment were in 1991. Desperate for votes.

They don't get those votes and they loose out on a very, very good salary and very, very good perks.

My suggestions/comments all along have not been right from wrong but realistic suggestions considering our government situation and attitude.

If The Sun kicks up a stink and suggests another breed being banned. Joe public the sun reader will not see any other options and believe this is the right solution. The government will quickly ban this breed to show Joe public they are doing some thing about the attacks as they want Joe public to vote for them.

Didn't this happen in 1991? I remember the pit bull with its jaws open and the bit on the jaw lock etc in one of the papers. I know many people including dog lovers who don't like the pit bull due to all the negative press from that time.

There is not many people out there who would like to see bsl removed more than my self. But... like i've said the government are not going to admit their mistakes just like that and drop bsl all together. The only chance of that is knocking one brick out at a time hoping eventually the wall falls down.

  15. The Kennel Club already have such a scheme

    http://www.obedienceuk.com/news/news_item.asp?NewsID=134

Thanks for link, thats some thing i was not aware of. Not read it fully but perhaps a few ammendments and made compulsory for certain breeds...........And perhaps if proved successful.........BSL relaxed. (Instead of breeds being banned and wiped out. Owners could be made to attend these courses/classes).

  16. I'd be interested in your thoughts on my above comment.

Also I'd be interested to know where you think all the dog trainers/classes are suddenly going to materialise from ?

Perhaps centralised at the kennel club? The kennel club could put together these lessons and gather what imfomation should be included. They could recruit and train their nominated trainers (approx 5). These few trainers could then train people wishing to become these dog assesors (what information to give, how to prepare the lessons etc, self funded by the individuals). Just a suggestion mind. Please bear in mind that as with any job, all recruits should have several years experience of dog ownerships and selected by cv, what handling experience they have had etc.

I don't always give the best suggestions. :)

Any one else with any more suggestions or their own views?

My view is bearing in mind our thick and dictating government too. They are not going to just accept "well i had a pitbull and it never bit any body". or after a certain breed attack "i've got that breed of dog dog which is a total softie. Blame the owner."

  17. I totally agree on the socialising bit and think this is some thing that should be included in the owner training (as well as advised in the dog training). Many, especially new owners don't know how important socialising is and should be educated on the importance of socialising before their purchase.

Good luck to all the dogs and their owners up in court.
