One of my local freecycles does not allow animals to be advertised but refers people to a list of rescues. The other one does though.
Gumtree advertise a lot of animals for free to good home or people wanting a new pet. Have sat many hours e-mailing people on there trying to point them in the direction of the nearest rescues. As mentioned earlier, I don't think some peolpe realise how rescues operate and think it is best for the dog if them to rehome direct into someone's home so it doesn't have to go into a kennel. Other people aren't aware of how many rescues are close to them with suitable animals.
