  1. Naturediet do a lite/senior version, maybe that would be worth a try?

No idea on the walking thing, do you think she doesn't like going out in the dark? If so it might get easier over the spring/summer. I guess you could get a buggy and wheel her a distance from home so she has to walk back, but it seems a bit extreme!

  2. Jai, a white lurcher pup with dark brindle patches, was recently adopted from Greyhound GAP, but last night panicked when some drunken kids started making noise and banging dustbin lids and managed to get away from his owner and bolt.

His new owners and all at GAP are frantic to get him back, there are people out now searching and postering. Please if anyone is in the area can you keep your eyes open for him? Any help getting posters up round the area would also be appreciated.

His details and poster are on Doglost here:

  3. Does that mean you can use library books that are in EPUB format on the Kindle now?

I used to buy 1-2 books every week, but since getting my Sony e-reader and joining several libraries that have e-book sections (Bromley is my latest discovery, which also gives access to Bexley and Lewisham e-book libraries biggrin.gif) I have only actually bought one book - so I reckon my reader has paid for itself and more!

I was put off the Kindle because at the time it didn't support EPUB or PDF books, but it sounds as though that's no longer the case?

  4. Really sorry you are having such a hard time at the moment Group_Hug_Emoticon.gif

I'm sure it's not that your parents don't care about you staying away, but they are probably upset by the rows and have no idea how to resolve things without upsetting either you or your brother. How often is his girlfriend there, could you try to visit when she's not around?

Obviously don't answer this if you'd rather not, but what sort of things do you and your brother's gf row about? Is there no way of calling a truce and at least being polite to one another even if you don't really like each other for the rest of the family's sake? Where's your brother in all this, could he talk to her and get her to be more reasonable?

It's such a shame if you don't feel able to attend a family celebration just because she's going to be there. I think you should go, avoid brother's gf as much as possible, be cheerful and scrupulously polite to her if you have to have contact and if she's unpleasant just walk away, then if there's any 'atmosphere' it will be obvious who's generating it and perhaps she won't get asked next time. I know it's easier said than done though Group_Hug_Emoticon.gif

  5. Dogs seem able to tolerate a huge amount of oral pain without showing any obvious signs and will still eat OK etc - we've had dogs come into rescue with terrible teeth and gums shrunk back to expose nerves etc and they haven't shown any obvious signs of discomfort (although they must have been in some pain).

Something stuck in his mouth is possible, or perhaps a bad abscess, but things like yawning and lip-licking are general signs of stress so could reflect pain somewhere else in his body.

Really glad he's feeling a bit better, anyway, and hope your vet is able to get to the bottom of it and sort him out

  6. Well done for taking her Sue, it was a very sad situation and her owner was devastated to have to let her go mecry.gif

We had a couple of pictures from her previous home, she really is gorgeous wub.gif

    Megan1.jpg

She seems to be sheep friendly - in fact she's had some training in sheep handling in the past

  7. That sounds a very long time unless there are exceptional circumstances, ie the dog is having ongoing vet treatment or the adopter is ill. We have sometimes agreed to hold dogs until after an adopter's pre-arranged holiday, but would generally only do that if it meant a delay of a week or so, not months.

I assume you have a particular case in mind, is it the adopter or the rescue who is delaying things?

  8. Meg:

I must only bark at things that are genuinely exciting, not at anything and everything that moves ever whether it has anything to do with me or not. People in hats do not qualify as genuinely exciting rolleyes.gif

    Taz:

I must remember that my mum isn't particularly keen on dead things being presented to her when we are out on walks. Strangely the longer they have been dead the less keen she seems to be. I'll stick to relatively fresh things in future sick01.gif

    Jess:

I must stop boinging around like Tigger when mum is trying to get me ready to go out, it does NOT need to take 10 minutes to get my coat and lead on boldred.gif

    Sophie:

I must stop pretending I haven't been fed for days, particularly when we have visitors. My starved and beaten act fools no-one! ph34r_anim.gif

    Benji:

I must not bury my kong in the garden then get upset because I can't find it and expect mum to go out in the cold and rain and snow and search for it! She says next time I do it it will stay buried and I may join it laughingsmiley.gif

  9. As always I can't recommend the Song of Ice and Fire books ( or is it Fire and Ice, I can never remember ) set in a mythical land and dealing with the constant struggle for power between the various noble houses, if you like tales of double dealing, back stabbing, dragon's, incest and general scull-duggery then these books are for you, they're so good they've been made into an HBO series to be shown next year, they also have a huge internet following which rivals Lord of the Rings in size....so if you haven't already....READ THEM biggrin.gif

I'd agree, all the George R. R. Martin books are fantastic, huge sweep and wonderful characters - though very dark and violent in places.

In the same sort of genre I'd recommend anything by Robin Hobb - all good, though I still think her 'Farseer' trilogy is the best. I'm currently waiting impatiently for the third book of the 'Rain Wild Chronicles' to be published.

Fiona McIntosh is also a good read in the large-scale gritty type of fantasty, 'The Quickening' trilogy is my favourite of hers. I see she is also now writing crime books which will be worth a look.

Completely different, but there are some excellent Scandinavian crime writers becoming popular here, possibly on the back of the success of Stieg Larsson's Millenium Trilogy. Joe Nesbo (The Snowman) is very good are are all the books by Karen Fossim.

  10. I'd also suggest trying to cut the rice out of his diet for a bit and see if that helps. It's difficult because a lot of foods for dogs with sensitive stomachs are rice-based, but some dogs really don't tolerate it well.

There are plenty of good foods available that don't contain rice - Fish4Dogs and Wafcol Salmon and Potato might be worth a try, or JWB I think do some rice-free 'flavours'. I'm sure there are others people could recommend. You could mix in raw green tripe to make it more interesting if he's a fussy eater.

Hope you manage to sort things out for him flowers.gif
