An RSPCA Bridlington branch story http://www.rspca-bridlington.org/8.html

"Dogged determination by one of our volunteers re-united a cat with his owner 9 years after he was stolen! A couple from Wetwang contacted us saying a cat had been hanging around looking a bit worse for wear. They also said he looked unusual so was probably some sort of pedigree. They were advised to take him to the nearest vet to see if he had a micro-chip which they did. The vets said he was a Cornish Rex and contacted Pet Log for the owner’s details but unfortunately they were no longer valid so they rang the veterinary practice where he had been micro-chipped. Again the details were out of date as they had not seen the cat since 2002. The vets contacted RSPCA Treasurer Kay Harrison to advise her of this but she decided she was going to try and find out where the owners had moved to. She had the owners name and the cats name and description so she contacted the vets again which had micro-hipped him and asked if they could give her the names of all the veterinary practices in the area so she could ring around to see if the cat had been registered somewhere else. None of them had the cat registered but the last practice suggested ringing another practice in Bradford.

They had a Cornish Rex registered in the same name but it was not the cat that had been found. Kay thought this was just too much of a coincidence not to be connected so she asked the vets if they would ring the cat’s owners to make enquiries. She could not believe it when the vets rang her back to say the cat had been stolen 9 years ago. The owners were obviously ecstatic to hear that the cat had been found and although we will never know how a cat that was stolen in the Bradford area 9 years ago ended up in Wetwang were are all delighted with the end result of the investigation.

This goes to show yet again the value of a micro-chip. Although it took a lot of effort to trace the owners because of the circumstances had the cat not had a micro-chip at all the owners would never have been found and we would have had yet another unclaimed stray to find a home for and Rio’s owners would always have been wondering what happened to him.
