Dexie ~ Super Loving, Adorable Boy – 9Mo White Greyhound Pup

Recommended Posts

DEXIE

**UPDATED: 8TH JULY 2012**

The striking Dexie is a large 9 month old greyhound pup who has found his way over to us from Ireland along with his sister Della. Dexie has a pristine white coat and black patches that makes the white shine all the brighter, and its amazingly soft. He really is a gorgeous boy, with a perfectly placed black patch on his head which means he has one black and one white ear. Dexie has a very endearing little expression that is very hard to resist!

~ Personality ~

Dexie, or ‘Dexie Bobble’ as he has become known, has been in his foster home now for 7 weeks. He has proved to be an incredibly affectionate, loving boy who absolutely adores children and craves company. He is very dog savvy and listens to a telling off without trouble. He also adores his toys and has great fun romping around with his foster family. Dexie has the potential to be a fantastic family dog and could live with children over the age of 8.

When Dexie first arrived he was very lacking in confidence and scared of being left. He needed constant reassurance from his foster family for the first few weeks, but is now starting to get over this hump. He is still only a puppy who didn’t have the best start in life, but is now really starting to make some headway in getting over his rough beginnings. In the right family, Dexie is guaranteed to flourish.

~ Medical Issues ~

Dear Dexie has slightly malformed front legs which are due to a congenital defect in the growth plates of his legs. The growth plates have not formed 100% correctly, giving him slightly odd shaped wrists. Dexie has been examined by two separate vets who both concur that this mild deformity should not pose him any problems, though may increase his chances of developing arthritis in his twilight years. Dexie runs and plays as a very normal puppy and is completely unfazed by the defect. We hope that you are as unfazed by his slightly lumpy legs!

~ In the Home ~

Dexie has found the transition from kennel to house a bit more difficult than his sister, and initially developed an upset tummy from the stress of it all. He can get rather anxious at times, and does not like being left completely alone. Right now he craves constant company and does show signs of separation anxiety if left as an only dog. These signs will diminish as he continues to settle, gain self-confidence, and learn that he is safe and secure in his foster home. Already he can be left for up to 2hrs with other dogs and not cause any hassle. The darling Dexie would really benefit most from finding his forever home ASAP, as the more attached he gets to his foster family, the harder the upheaval is going to be for him when he has to move again.

Apart from this, Dexie is a darling boy to keep you company and is a constant delight when he has his family around him. He loves to snuggle and give kisses, and is working on perfecting his perfect roach pose! He is learning the do’s and don’ts of home life, is getting better at not chewing unwanted items and no longer counter surfs. He has also just about mastered his toilet training and will whine if he needs to go out. He is a young pup with oodles of potential to learn and grow with the right family.

~ Other Animals ~

Dexie is sharing his foster home with several other dogs and has relied heavily on their guidance during his transition into family life. It is likely this young boy will need another dog already present in his future home, and we expect he would slot brilliantly into an existing pack. Dexie is excellent with other dogs of all sizes, though sometimes forgets how big he is himself and can be all paws and elbows, which can be not so fun for a smaller dog. He loves to play with other young dogs, but would also benefit from an older role model to learn from.

Dexie Bobble has not been tested with cats yet, but it is thought that he could live with a confident cat who won’t let him get too boisterous. He is currently living with 3 guinea pigs and pays them no attention.

~ Out and About ~

Dexie loves getting out to explore the world, and he is greatly enjoying his walks. His fosterer is working with his lead training which is coming along nicely. He is a super social, friendly boy who is bursting to make friends with everyone and everything he meets. He has so much love to give that he will pull to go and greet dogs and people he meets on his walks, but remember he is still just a puppy and he is learning that not everyone will want to say hi. With some work on bonding and recall, Dexie will be able to be let offlead. With some work from his current fosterer, Dexie now settle well in the car and enjoys his road trips.

~ Where Can I Live? ~

Like all puppies Dexie will need a home with someone there during the day to keep an eye on him and give him the company he craves. He would be great in a home with another dog(s) already present to show him the ropes and give him someone to lean on. As he has so much playful energy, he would be a fantastic play buddy for another young dog. This playful energy together with his large size means Dexie would not be the best dog for a family with young children. There is no malice in him at all, but he is a clumsy adolescent who isn’t shy about showing his love for people, and this can mean he may bowl kiddies over without even realising it.

As Dexie has shown separation anxiety and will become destructive when left completely alone, he will need a home where someone, human or canine, there all day so he can feel secure. He will need owners prepared to continue the work of his foster parents if he is to be left for longer periods without hassle. It may be a bit of a fine line between giving him company and reassurance without slowing his developing confidence and giving him space to grow himself. We do have a behaviourist available to help you with this should you consider giving this boy his forever home. Once this issue is mastered, however, there is absolutely nothing at all stopping Dexie from becoming an excellent greyhound role model – he is perfect in every other way.

~~ KERRY GREYHOUNDS UK ~~

Kerry Greyhounds UK is a small voluntary organisation that is based in Norfolk, England. It focuses on rehoming unwanted Irish greyhounds and lurchers, as huge numbers are bred in Ireland each year and homes are few and far between. KGUK operates through a network of volunteers spaced over Ireland and the UK. We can look after approximately 30 dogs at any one time in both kennels and foster homes.

Each dog is neutered, vaccinated, & microchipped before being adopted (unless stated otherwise).

We assess the suitability of all home offers, and we have homed greyhounds in all corners of the UK.
