GRETCHEN

**UPDATED: 5th JULY 2012**

The lovely Gretchen is an ex-racing greyhound girl who has just turned 4 years old. She is a pretty fawn lady with kind eyes and a healthy coat

~ Personality ~

Gretchen is a very shy little girl who needs a patient, loving home. She takes a bit of time to come out of herself and does not currently have much trust for people, especially strangers. Once she knows you, she’s beautifully sweet and gentle, but she is clearly not used to so much human contact and is unsure of how to approach people.

Gretchen has very recently moved into a foster home, and this complete upheaval from everything she knows has stressed her. She had never been in a home before, so is understandably needing time to adjust to the huge change and to get used to being surrounded by new people. Right now she is shy and uncertain, preferring to stand off to the side and observe the situation. We hope to see her come out of her shell over the next few weeks as she gets used to her foster parents. Gretchen has oodles of love to give to anyone who takes the time to bond with her, and she desperately needs someone to love and trust.

~ In the Home ~

Gretchen has found the transition from kennel to home very stressful, and needs some time and a patience to come out of herself. Every single thing is new to her, and it is sadly now apparent that she has not received much human attention or contact in her previous 4 years. Right now if approached she will try to run away, and if that option is not available she will simply freeze and stand until you are done handling her. She is in no way aggressive, but does not yet enjoy the interactions either. She is not currently responsive to words or gestures and does not trust people.

This little girl’s lifeline right now is the other greyhound she is sharing her foster home with. Gretchen follows her foster sister around and watches how she interacts with people. She is learning what to do and where to go within the home, taking all her cues from her greyhound friend. As such, Gretchen will need to go to a home with at least one other confident, adjusted dog present to show her the ropes and help support her.

Though having only been in her foster home for 10 days, Gretchen is already house trained and clean through the night. She is very quiet and tries so hard to be a ‘good dog’; it’s just that right now she doesn’t understand what people want from her. With lots of time and patience, this girl is sure to be a gem. When she realises what you want her to do, she will do her level best to achieve it. It will just take a bit of time to break through her barriers and earn her trust.

~ Other Animals ~

Gretchen is very well behaved with other dogs regardless of shape or size. She may not be the most playful of the bunch, but if given more time we think she will start to show some interest in toys. As already mentioned, it is vital that Gretchen go to a home with another dog or two already present to help her transition into your home. She is a lovely, amiable girl who is dog savvy and content to share her space and belongings. She has not been tested with cats yet, but this can be carried out if needed.

~ Out and About ~

Gretchen walks very well on the lead when she’s not frightened. If something spooks her, she will stop and freeze, and needs to be gently coaxed out of herself. If approached by people on the street, she will choose her option B: freeze and stand until the person is finished with her. She sadly does not currently get much joy out of these interactions, but that happiness will come once her fear disappears. Like most greyhounds, Gretchen will not need a huge amount of exercise. She will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch her legs offlead in a secure area once or twice a week.

If you think you can offer this girl the love, patience and security that she desperately needs, please do contact us. Gretchen is a special little lady who will be so incredibly rewarding and loyal if given a bit of love, guidance, and a space on your sofa.

~~ KERRY GREYHOUNDS UK ~~

Kerry Greyhounds UK is a small voluntary organisation that is based in Norfolk, England. It focuses on rehoming unwanted Irish greyhounds and lurchers, as huge numbers are bred in Ireland each year and homes are few and far between. KGUK operates through a network of volunteers spaced over Ireland and the UK. We can look after approximately 30 dogs at any one time in both kennels and foster homes.

Each dog is neutered, vaccinated, & microchipped before being adopted (unless stated otherwise).

We assess the suitability of all home offers, and we have homed greyhounds in all corners of the UK.
