Posie ~ Lovely Affectionate Girl - 2Yo Brindle Greyhound

Recommended Posts

POSIE

**UPDATED: 2nd July 2012**

Meet the lovely Posie. She is a 2 year old ex-racing greyhound girl who was not fast enough for the track. She is now looking for a pet home to call her own. Posie is a striking brindle girl with beautiful eyes and an intelligent expression. She is in very good condition and has been well looked after before coming to us.

~ Personality ~

Posie is a lovely girl, very sweet and affectionate. She likes interacting with people and loves getting fuss and cuddles. As Posie settles into her foster home, her character continues to grow. She is a lovely young dog with oodles of potential if given the chance.

~ In the Home ~

Posie has been in her foster home for 7 weeks now, and is doing well. She is gradually adjusting to the changes, having never experienced living in a home before, and is learning that she will get regular meals and regular love. Initially Posie was quite anxious about what she considered highly coveted luxuries, such as food, toys, or being able to sleep on a soft duvet. This led to her getting tense and grumpy if another dog approached her at certain times. Posie’s foster parents have been working with her on this, and she is making good progress. Really this issue should dissipate once she realises that she will get fed twice a day every day, no matter what, and there's no need to put so much value on a doggie bed. Posie needs gentle handling and, with a bit of time, she will loosen up and relax.

In other aspects of home life, Posie is doing great. She is learning to respond to her foster parent’s body language, and picks up hints for when its walk or bed time. She is very happy to potter around after her foster parents and watch the regular household activities such as dusting or washing dishes. Posie is currently an only dog, and is fine with being left for up to 4hrs with a stuffed kong to occupy herself. She is not destructive when left and is generally happy to snooze away, especially if she’s left right after a walk.

Posie’s housetraining has also been a case of gradual but positive progress. She is being taken out to toilet very regularly by her foster parents, and this routine has definitely helped her. It is possible that this girl will relapse a bit when she moves to her forever home, due to stress, but she will remember the housetraining once this initial anxiety has settled down.

~ Other Animals ~

Posie is in general good with other dogs of all sizes, and enjoys going for walks with them. As already mentioned, she has been having issues with resource guarding her toys, food and bed, but this is being worked on with her foster parents. Once she realises that there's plenty of squeaky ball to go around, we think she will settle and learn that it’s more fun to share. Posie is not cat or small furry friendly.

~ Out and About ~

Posie really enjoys her walks and gets excited when she sees the lead, however this happiness can translate into overexcitement when out, and she can bark at other dogs if not corrected straight away. She will also get rather vocal if she sees a rabbit or deer, so at times she needs a fairly strong hand and corrections. Once she calms down, Posie is a good girl on the lead and responds well to gentle handling. We think that Posie is quite an active girl and some of this over-exuberance would die down if she was able to get a good sprint in 3-4 times a week in a secure area. She is only seeing the world for the first time now, having spent the first few years of her life in racing kennels, and its beautiful seeing her so happy and curious about the world around her.

~ Where Can I Live? ~

We feel Posie would be best suited to a home that has had sighthounds before and is familiar with how their minds function. She needs continued work on getting her focus back when out on walks, to prevent the vocal outbursts, and potential adopters will need to take heed of the resource guarding even though it is gradually dissipating. She would be best in a home without children because of this also. Posie is currently an only dog and is coping fine with being left for periods of time, so she could continue to be an only dog or could perhaps live with an older, mannerly dog who will see when she is under stress and leave her be.

If someone has a heart big enough to see the beautiful Posie’s potential, she will be a fantastic dog to work with and improve over time. Posie loves her people and wants to be ‘a good dog’, she just needs a home who understands how she sees the world and to work with her from there. There is nothing about Posie that is unchangeable, she is simply a little rough around the edges and needs a bit more work to be that perfect greyhound. This girl has huge potential to be a fantastic family member with the right family.

~~ KERRY GREYHOUNDS UK ~~

Kerry Greyhounds UK is a small voluntary organisation that is based in Norfolk, England. It focuses on rehoming unwanted Irish greyhounds and lurchers, as huge numbers are bred in Ireland each year and homes are few and far between. KGUK operates through a network of volunteers spaced over Ireland and the UK. We can look after approximately 30 dogs at any one time in both kennels and foster homes.

Each dog is neutered, vaccinated, & microchipped before being adopted (unless stated otherwise).

We assess the suitability of all home offers, and we have homed greyhounds in all corners of the UK.
