CLARENCE

Say hello to the fabulous Clarence! Clarence is a 1-2 year old lurcher, likely greyhound x whippet, who was found straying in a bad condition in Ireland. The poor boy was very thin and had large abscessed wounds on his head with a skin infection to boot.

Several weeks on and with some gentle TLC, Clarence is now fighting fit once again. His facial wounds have healed and antibiotics have cleared up his skin infection nicely. He has also gained at least 20-25% of his body weight. He is smaller and more slender than the average sized greyhound, and his gorgeous light fawn coat now sparkles in the sun.

Now the he is feeling better, Clarence’s character is showing itself, and what a character this little hound has! He is a feisty, fun-loving dog that loves to love life. His tail is always wagging and he absolutely adores any and all interaction with both people and canines. He is a cheeky boy and will likely test his boundaries when going to his new home, but you can’t help but smile at his antics and fun-seeking personality.

Clarence would be perfect for an active family who enjoy being out doing things and meeting people. He is good with other dogs of all sizes and could live with one or several houndy companions, though perhaps not with an overly timid friend as he likes to play rough, lurcher style! He is not cat friendly. With a little bit of patience and a gentle but firm command, this boy has the potential to be a fantastic family companion.

Clarence is currently being kept in kennels and has not yet been in a home, but usually greyhounds and lurchers adjust to this change very quickly. It generally takes about 10-14 days for them to start to settle in a home, and really all they need is time and patience.

**UPDATE: FEBRUARY 2011**

Dear Clarence has been waiting a long time for his forever home, and we cant understand why – this boy is a stunner! Please note that after being re-assessed by a different vet, Clarence older than 1-2 years and is more likely to be a middle-aged boy at around 5-6 years.

The poor boy has been finding kennel life very stressful, and has now moved in to a foster home where he has done a complete turn-around, both physically and mentally. Clarence was suffering from stress-related digestive problems, but this has disappeared with incredible speed. He is on a sensitive digestion formula and has had no problems at all since moving to foster care. He has put on 1 kg and is now proudly weighing in at 18 kg! The skin infection that had been on his face had started to come back, though biopsies taken showed no nasties. After a short course if antibiotics, this is now healing up once and for all.

Clarence is one very happy boy in his foster home, and is soaking up all the affection and attention like a big fawn sponge. He absolutely thrives with people and is a very human-orientated hound. His fosterers are very smitten with him and he has earned the nickname ‘Mr. Cuddle Wigglybum’!

In return for all the love, Clarence is a very attentive boy and his life centers around pleasing his people. He just wants to be with you and to make you happy. We feel Clarence would do best in a home where he can be around his owners for most of the time – perhaps a home where people work part time, or work from home, or are retired. Clarence would also be a good boy to bring to work with you as he is more than happy to snooze away after his walk, contented in knowing you are simply in the room with him.

Clarence’s behaviour with other dogs has also drastically improved now that he is out of the stressful kennels. He is an absolute socialite and loves playing with other dogs he meets out on his walks. His fosterer’s take him hiking, which he loves, and also take him to work with them where he has made friends with all the other dogs. He is a fantastic boy!

We really hope to find Clarence his forever home as soon as possible, as it will only increase his stress to be moved from his current fosterer’s if he bonds too closely with them. Clarence is going to make a fabulous hound and he has very few flaws. He loves the car, walks excellently on the lead, is good with other dogs and is a cuddler extraordinaire!

Clarence is currently being fostered with the SPCA in Co. Wexford, Ireland. Kerry Greyhound Connection is helping to find this boy his forever home. He can be transported via Kerry Greyhounds to the UK if a suitable home offer comes up. This will be organised and paid for by Kerry Greyhounds/Wexford SPCA, and we ask only for a donation to help cover costs. Please note that adopters will need to travel to our nearest collection point to pick him up. He is neutered, vaccinated, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure.
