CAIRO

Cairo is a 2 year old male greyhound with a pretty black and white marked coat. Poor Cairo ended his racing career when he broke his hock before being surrendered to us. This has now healed up and he is just starting to use his leg again.

Cairo is a quiet, undemanding fellow who is very friendly and sweet with people knows. He can be a little lacking in confidence, but this will change once he's in a loving home and gets to see more of the world outside of kennels. He is good with other greyhounds and walks nicely on the lead. Sweet Cairo has never been in a home environment and so will need a 'settling in' period when first adopted. He hasn't yet been tested with cats or small dogs, but these can be organised prior to adoption if needed.

**UPDATE: JULY 2010**

Cairo is now well settled in the kennels in Norfolk, and is comfortable in the routine. He is a friendly and affectionate boy with an impressive black and white coat. His broken hock is completely healed and Cairo now loves his walks, it's the highlight of his day.

Cairo grew up in racing kennels so sadly was not well socialised with other dogs as a puppy. Right now he doesn't realise that dogs come in non-greyhound shapes, and is very excitable around them. He needs lots of socialisation with reward based training to learn that all dogs are dogs, as once he realises this he is very well behaved with them. He is very responsive to both his name and food treats, so training isn't particularly difficult with him, all that is needed is repetition.

Like most greyhounds, Cairo does not need a huge amount of exercise. He is content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch his legs offlead in a secure area once or twice a week.

In general greyhounds are calm, mannerly dogs that are well used to being handled. They can fit very well in to a wide range of different lifestyles and usually adjust to the home life very quickly. Their soft, easy going nature often makes them ideal to live in a family with children, while their love of lazing around and low exercise requirements can make them perfect for the elderly. Greyhounds also don't shed as much as €other dog breeds and this can make them suitable to live with allergy sufferers.

Cairo is a lovely boy in all other aspects, and is sure to make a very rewarding member of the family once he gets someone willing to work in his socialisation issue.

**UPDATE: JULY 2010b**

Cairo is continuing to improve on a weekly basis with his regular training, and is getting better at meeting other dogs while out on walks. He is a lovely affectionate boy who adores being around people.

What Cairo needs now is a nurturing foster home where he can continue to improve with one-on-one care and training. It is definitely time this lovely fella got to experience some home comforts and learn about what its like to live in a house. He is sure to give back tenfold what he gets.

**UPDATE: AUGUST 2010**

The stunning Cairo took part in the annual Cromer Carnival in Norfolk, UK recently, and really enjoyed his day out.

He loved meeting all the different people and greyhound friends, and getting lots of fuss and attention. Though he was muzzled as a precaution, he behaved very well with the other types of dogs there and after his initial excitement decided there were far too many to keep an eye on! He is a truly lovely boy with a striking coat and is going to make a fantastic companion for the right family.

**UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 2010**

The gorgeous Cairo has now moved in to a foster home, and has made amazing progress in a short amount of time. Getting one-on-one attention and training in a loving home environment is exactly what this boy needed, and he fast becoming a perfectly well adjusted dog.

Cairo's carer says he is one of the nicest dogs she has ever fostered. He is an amiable gentle giant of a dog who is now co-existing happily alongside 5 other dogs (including a small terrier), a parrot and several horses. Cairo is clean in the house, travels beautifully in the car and is ok to be left both with other dogs and completely alone. He isn't cat friendly but is getting used to seeing cats and not getting overly excited.

Cairo is also vastly improving when out and about. He walks calmly on the lead and his behaviour when meeting other dogs is getting better daily. He is fine when he knows the dog, but he is still learning to be polite around small dogs he doesn't know and can get a bit reactive if an unknown small dog runs up to him offlead. Because of this he is walked with a muzzle for now. Living with so many dogs is certainly helping him improve, but new owners will need to continue his small dog socialisation to help him eventually become small dog safe.

Cairo likes children and is calm and relaxed around them. His playful side is now emerging and he enjoys playing with soft toys, throwing them in the air and charging around with them. He would do very well in a family home with young kiddies to play with, though he would do equally well on his own with an older person. He is also very good with dogs once they are integrated in to his 'pack'.

This wonderful boy is ready for his new home and definitely deserves his chance. Whoever decides to give him his forever sofa will never regret it.
