  1. I had a Mexican woman in my old job who would talk in Spanish to one of our collegues who was also mexican. It didn't bother me too much as I speak spanish, but I felt it excluded the others who didnt. If it excludes one person specifically I think its really rude. I'm good at languages and will natter away in several but I would never dream of doing that n front of someone who wasn't able to join in. But I do agree its lovely to be able to just "switch off" and speak your own language to someone. Again its about context and judging the situation.

It also gave her a nice shock when she realised she couldn't start slagging me off in spanish as I knew what she was saying - to say the look on her face that day was priceless is such an understatement!

  2. Flippin' 'eck I just did a bit of an edit and the ether swallowed it  I just wanted to clarify that I meant shock collars, I can see the benefits of other remote collars for deaf dogs.

Also there's a lot of psychological literature saying that aversive training and negative reinforcement works across all species, but thats conducted in such controlled environments no-one could replicate that in the park/field etc. Besides, its a lazy way to get your dog to "behave". Shocking an animal you take into your home to love and care for seems wrong to me. Taking the time to train Tyler with positive reinforcement methods gives me so much pleasure, that one moment when he finally "gets" it and he's so pleased with himself (and normally with the sossidges too!) is what its all about (also ignoring all the times when he just blimmin' ignores me :roll eyes:!)

  3. Oh bum Helen :( You've got to tell the potential rescue you H/C's them for. What if they then go looking elsewhere?

The sad thing is, though aversive training *can* work in some cases, its so very much dependent on the knowledge of the owner/trainer and the individual dog that it just compounds the problem in 99.9% of cases, and as Ange says, you end up with a shell of a dog instead of a happy dog who cooperates with you.

  4. We have a panasonic 254 and my fave loaf is the "french" one which is:

    400g strong white flour

    1 tsp yeast

    1tsp salt

    190 ml water

that runs on the "french" setting we have on ours which is a 6hr cycle with 45min-1hr rest at the start (which is included in the 6h total)

OH says the recipe for "normal" white bread is:

    400g strong white flour

    3/4 tsp yeast

    170ml water

    1tsp sugar

    1tsp salt

that runs on the normal "bake" setting on a 4hr cycle with a 45 min rest period at the start included.

If you want a specific recipe let me know and I'll look in my pansonic book for you :flowers:

ooh and a quick edit, the book says to put the yeast in the bottom, then cover it with the flour salt and sugar and then pour the water over the top. Back-to-front from how I would have done it, but despite my doubts it always turns out ok (and we leave ours going overnight so if it was going to go t*ts up, it would!!)

  5. i think my bmi is about 29, im 5'3" and about 12st (was 11st last year but have since rediscovered my sweet tooth  )

I'm only a dress size 14 though. According to the chart i should weigh 10st 3 max, last time i weighed that I was a size 10, so if I was my "ideal" bmi, it would mean I'd be a dress size 8-10  I don't think it takes into account muscle and how much more that weighs.

  6. I am making an effort to lurk less and post more but just found myself posting in contro now - I may have to lie down from the shock of it

RMF: I need a drink, but I can't be bothered to get up and get one. I am a lazy moo...

  7. The way I see what's happened on this thread is:

    a) summersun's brought up something she was asked to clarify on another thread but hasn't fully set out her case in the few first posts which leads to potential misinterpretation

    b) she has then made a couple of comments about what the debate is about/not about

    c) snow has rightly pointed out that only admin moderates in here - i.e. to keep people on topic

I hope its just a matter of getting to grips with the ebb and flow of a forum where people care so passionately about their dogs and not anything more.

    Back on topic:

I know bog all about RRs but more than a smidge about genetics, and while I'm interested to hear the arguement I'm not convinced it could be the sole basis of the "percieved aggression" but I'm all ears...

  8. Are the stinky green tripe sticks going to help him finish the assignment?

if only it was that simple. Its a chemistry assignment and I'm not sure how stinky tripe fits in with that.

The idea (which I totaly failed to type before) was to keep the dog quiet but he's barking in my face now because he wants some of my tea.

  9. As usual OH has left his OU assignment until the last possible moment  So I have distributed stinky green tripe sticks, made myself a cup of tea and cranked up my coal-fired laptop  I'm taking bets on how long I'll be left in peace before I get asked to help him....

Also, crafty peeps - do any of you do jewellery aside from Elaine? I'm thinking I need a new hobby (well, resurrect an old one) and wondered which online stores were good service/value etc. Last time I made jewellery it was mail-order/trek to the "local" bead shop 25 miles away...

edited as I cannot spell jewellery it seems

  10. I'd just been sat here thinking exactly the same thing. Personally, although I can't imagine any circumstance in which I would choose to abort my own child, I'm pro choice & don't believe that anyone else in society has the right to choose for a couple but, with the exception of reasonable justification for denying that (such as rape or extreme malice after breakup, eg trying to force her to have the child against her wishes but not being willing to take custody himself) I don't think a woman alone should be able to enforce abortion on the father regardless of his opinion.

Some of you may argue that she's the one who has to carry the child but I would say that there are choices - abstinence or contraception for example - so if somebody either gets too drunk to know what they are doing or makes a concious choice & has already made her choice (ie to have unprotected sex) when a child is conceived then I think it's for the couple to reach a decision not her. If they can't both agree on termination then I'm afraid I wouldn't legally permit it to happen.

In, for example the case of a careless / irresponsible one night stand she can already decide to keep the child against his wishes & he's then forced to support that child for the next 18 years so I don't think it's any less reason for the woman when he doesn't want abortion.

Are you my OH? Or have you been talking to him? This is exactly what he says when we argue have a heated debate on this subject. And, whilst I agree that in an ideal world that should happen. A baby is made by a couple and thus an abortion is a joint decision. *But* the practicalities of actually making that happen, legally and ethically make it pretty impossible. Aside from the job of trying to find the father in some circumstances (whether that's because she doesn't know/can't remember/he's done a runner etc) what if its rape/abuse etc?

I know its harsh but if you remove the final decision from the woman it is possible thefore for a woman to be forced to have a baby against her will. Is that not the ultimate abuse? Is that the way a child should be brought into the world? Yes, its unfair for a child to be aborted against the father's wishes, but is the loss of that *potential* life worse than forcing a woman to carry a child against her will? Again, its about protecting the most vulnerable women in society.

  11. Us girls in the office have been debating about this (work is boooring at the moment!) and while we all agree that the medical stuff has come on in leaps and bounds, with babies being so premature but still viable outside the womb, the 24 week limit should stay.

The women that have such late abortions (generally - from reading published papers on the subject) are: young girls in denial, abuse/rape victims, women with mental health issues, women from disadvantaged circumstances and women who have had to wait that long to get the results of tests. And they are such a small percentage of the total number of women who are having abortions, removing this option from them - arguably the most vulnerable women in society - will only cause more pain and suffering. They are the ones who would be punished by changing the limit, not the women who have multiple/"social" abortions.

I personally would be happy to see the limit come down to 20 or 22 weeks, with the option of 24 weeks being available for medical tests that need that timeframe to provide a result *but* that would require the NHS to scan/test women much sooner than they do currently (AFAIK 19 weeks?). The pressure therefore on the currenly over-stretched maternity services would just be immense. How much more can that service take?

I also think that using it as a form of contraception (surely a contradiction in terms?!) is only a reality for a few women. And while that is abhorrent IMO it is only a tiny minority. Those women I do know who have had abortions have not made the decision lightly.

  12. Jeez you lot are trying to finish me off aren't you. Unfortunately yes it is another thing I can try. I've gone from being told by docs don't do anything not even walking far. To right do as much exercise as you can. It's going to hurt but I need you to do it so it's easier for me to remove as much as possible. I can vouch for it hurting cos I had a right old night of it last night. I've got a Yoga DVD so I'll stick that on. From memory I put it on once and something didn't go much on it. Can't remember if it was my back or one of my knees. I've got a bike as well but thought running will build up a bit of stamina. Last time I got on my bike I didn't get very far before my legs went like jelly. He said swimming is probably the best one to do.

Maybe try Pilates then if yoga's a bit much. Not sure what DVDs are out there but I do a class and its loosened up my knotty shoulders a treat. Its very much "go at your own pace" and it was originally developed to rehabilitate soldiers after WW1 but has moved on somewhat

  13. I have just got back from a luffly if somewhat hot and burning, weekend camping in the New Forest, we saw loads of foals  along with the normal ponies, cows, sheep and a pig  not seen one of those there before! But it got somewhat spoiled by Tyler getting constipated (too many exciting things to see and sniff to eat any dinner don't you know?!) so I'm now watching him like a hawk to make sure he's *just* constipated and await the reappearance of poo, or whether we're off on a little trip to the vets... that and OH's aunt saying they've got an 11wk old Pom puppy for their daughter (aged 18) because they think it will help her out (she had ME a few years ago and claims to still be ill now but somehow it seems to fluctuate with her parents being in/out and what she fancies/doesn't fancy doing. I'm not bashing anyone with ME, its just all a little fishy and suspicious from where I see it, and a dog certainly isn't going to help that...)

  14. I voted "can't decide" because I agree that it should have a "last orders" affair on it like Pingu suggests, to enable people to (hopefully) close off some of the things riased today. But I think it should be amended as others have suggested to include a full list of what rescues can/can't post, the allegations and a rebuttal from each.

I do think that as The Refuge grows, more people will come and as DP chucks more people off for whatever reasons, there needs to be a centralised accessible place to allow the rescues the right to reply to the accusations levied at them there.

Many times I have opened a reply up in there only to fail to find the words to accurately express my opinions and feelings about it. Anne's post in t'other thread was spot on, people have to learn about all this for themselves, as uncomfortable as it is to read at times. All new members are a likely to go along with the board consensus, it takes time to "settle in" and then learn to read between the lines (or read whats blatantly posted in some cases!)

  15. Didn't you know we all wear uniforms? It's like an air hostess one. All manmade fibres, a below the knee pleated navy skirt, itchy starchy pale grey blouse and a sunshine yellow scarf. Hats are for Sundays only. Make-up slapped on with a trowel and we grin inanely like this  all the time. When a host switches off their pc (for all of 20 minutes because that's the only sleep we get) we are allowed to change into our jim jams.

Fab, nice to see you're living up to my mental image
