  1. Mel I was gutted to hear this. I can only say thank you for allowing me the opportunity at your house to see this most wonderful of girls without that hollow and lost look in her eye. Amber was a living testimony to the will of dogs and her ability to come from the horrors of a previous life to the delights of your family with fun, devilment and love will never be forgotten.

Run free at the bridge little Amber, you will meet your family again one day

  2. I am very sorry to have been informed of this thread and of Amber's passing. Amber was a District Dog Rescue dog, not a WAW dog. In those days I ran DDR not WAW.

Mel I am very sorry at your loss. She was a special dog and I am glad you gave me the opportunity to look into her eyes when the fear had gone.

  3. Spoke to Steve Collins Programme Manager yesterday. Very pleasant conversation in which we agreed that nothing Smooth FM had done was in contravention of any law, or sadly that anything Dogs For Us are doing :(. However we had a discussion around the ethics of puppy farming, the poor conditions, what it really means to be a dog lover and how a place such as this is indeed a dog lovers nightmare and we went through some of the examples of dogs WAW has had from unsuspecting owners including the cocker spaniel with Rage which we had to PTS :(

He has promised that he will now discuss this with his boss and they will come back to me with their decision. Please keep the pressure up.

  4. We take it in turns at work to choose the radio station for the day, so I listen to Smooth once or twice a week.

It might be a regional thing (I'm in the Notts/Leics area) but they have an announcement - not an advert - each afternoon regarding rescue dogs needing homes. Whilst I'm not familiar with all the rescue organisations mentioned, the ones I do know are reputable.

I'm obviously more than happy to join you in writing an "educational" letter (aka complaining  ) to Smooth in Manchester, but I wonder if it might be worth including the fact that they'd make themselves seem very impressive if they dumped the rogue ad and instituted a similar slot to that which I hear?

I like that idea ... when i write tomorrow and phone on Monday i will take that route I think :)

  5. I have been a work today ... going through some busy periods work wise and having to work weekends, so rescue is taking a little bit of a back step for me sadly. However today listening to the radio on way to work i heard something which nearly drove me apoplectic!

Smooth FM which i rarely listen to was on because it was early morning and the music was early. Then over the airwaves came an advert for 'Dogs for You', which is a major reseller of 'pedigree' (Dog Lovers Registration Certificate' puppies in Manchester.

The advert went something like this

'Puppies of all breed available, we are a dog lovers paradise.' (sic)

This kennels which was formerly known as Mayfield Kennels, import dogs (puppies from Ireland, Wales and other breeders in the UK, to sell unseen to the general public. No home check is undertaken and you can simply walk in and walk out (after parting with a considerable amount of money) with a puppy. WAW have taken on a number of puppies and adult dogs who originated from this establishment, including a cocker spaniel who had Cocker Rage and whom we discovered had also had a sister with the same condition who was also put to sleep :(.

If you visit this establishment you will see large litters of puppies, which are ostensibly from the same litter, but you will not, as far as I am aware, see either parent.

The puppies are not Kennel Club Registered, and indeed Mayfield kennels were the founders of the Dog Lovers Registration Certificate.

I would like members to join me in making a formal complaint to Smooth FM in an attemp to raise awareness of the trade in puppies from puppy farms in Ireland, Wales and the UK.

A letter writing campaign previously got an advert for this establishment removed from my local radio, so your voice can count.

Please please get in touch and do something positive today.

  6. Harri very kindly deposited a lab sized pile of sick on the landing a few days ago  I have cleaned the area with antibacterial cleaner and plenty of water. I have also used "simple solution" stuff which is supposed to get rid of the smell. It hasnt worked -HELP any suggestions, cos its gross!!

You do what i do and lose your sense of smell!

  7. She's gone. Martin (vet) agreed it was the right time; her breathing was getting laboured and there was only ever going to be deterioration, not improvement.

She left at 2pm on the dot. Very fast, very calm, she just flumped into the sweetest 'sleeping' position and went. We've having an individual cremation for her and the ashes will be coming back home.

Thank you to WAW for entrusting her to us and to Catherine for supporting us through it. Thank you, also, to Grandma Squirrel, who did a grand job of fostering her last year :flowers:

Thank you, lovely Fugees, for loving her, too

I am so sorry I didn't get here before today and have only just lifted your text message (phone was in silent while I was in a meeting yesterday afternoon :( )

You have no need to thank me at all, you gave her love and light in her eyes again. She needed you at a time when most would have turned their backs on her.

Sleep well little one .. you were saved from pain and brought only warmth and love in your last days, there can be no better way to go to the Bridge

    :GroupHug: to Claire and Gary.

  8. :) You learn new things on forums ... I never knew green potatoes were poisonous ... i mean i have never eaten them because always thought they can't be right but never knew they would poison me!

More pics of the potato stealing hound please???

  9. Yeah right!!!

That Rescuewoman tells whoppers. :D

    Kazz xx

Would never ever ever in a million years own a yorkie

They are vile little beasties who cuddle up to you with rotten breath and kiss you with smelly tongues and snort in your face and bite you if they feel like it ... and who i simply adore (ouch there you go I have admitted it)

  10. Some people think so for show or working conditions. But you could on those grounds argue what is good for the goose is good for the gander! What do you think .... and no this isn't one of those interminable debate threads, I am simply asking you to look and see!

No I didn't think you would agree! And yet this is 2007, and obviously the practice still goes on :(. This little boy was found wandering along a road in warrington today along with another dog (possibly father) whose story follows at the end of this!

Only a few months old he was found too late and his tail is already dead and waiting to fall off. Of course this won't happen, we will have it amputated later today or tomorrow :(

A lovely couple found the two dogs walking with chains dragging behind and caught them and after trying to rouse RSPCA, Dog Warden, Police and various others finally managed to find their way to our vets and they came into the care of WAW.

The older of the two dogs has demodex mange (sp),

But that isn't all. Attached to his foot, through the skin is a fish hook. The picture here doesn't show the weight etc which was attached to it at the time he was found as this could easily be removed.

But it does show the chain :(.

Here is his foot with hook still intact!

He will have this removed tomorrow and be neutered at the same time. He will then begin treatment on the mange.

Please wish the two of them well. Neither are above a year old :(
