Interested in finding out more about this lovely girl? Please read on… Well, just take a look at Poppy. We dare you not to fall in love! Poppy is a 10 year old greyhound girl who has had a looooong life of racing and birthing pups and is now extremely deserving of a quiet home to retire to. Only the very best home offers for this girl please as she needs to be loved on, fawned on and generally spoilt for her golden years! Despite her 10 years, Poppy is in good health and has no current medical conditions. She has a lovely soft brindle coat and expressive eyes. She is 28” to the shoulder but can curl up very small when need be. ~ Personality ~ Generally: Confident, very friendly, loving, extremely happy with life, loves people, undemanding. Poppy is just amazing, nothing fazes her at all. Despite having lived all of her 10 years in kennels, she took to the home life like a duck to water. She is nicely confident and very happy to meet new people and socialise in general. She loves attention and we are sure she feels spoilt rotten now that she’s in a home environment and surrounded by people all day long. Poppy is happy all the time, really, and would be a fabulous mood-lifter for someone who has been looking for some company. You can't help but be happy when you’re around this lovely lady, she exudes it. ~ In the Home ~ Generally: Housetrained, quiet through the night, not destructive, will try to steal food from countertops. Poppy has been in her foster home for a month now and as already mentioned, she has settled right in without much fuss. You’d think she’s always been there! She is clean in the house, can be left with canine company, is not destructive and really her only ‘issue’ is her habit of jumping up on worktops to sniff out tasty dinners! Poppy LOVES toys and will have one or two play sessions every day, including the occasional mad moment in the garden with a squeaky. Definitely Poppy’s biggest love of all though is the sofa, and she really enjoys just getting to snuggle into a soft bed, especially if its beside her foster mum. Just because we feel she deserves the quiet life now, we would like to see Poppy placed in a home without young children so that she can be doted on 100% of the time! Poppy shares her foster home with 2 other greyhounds and gets along really well with them. She would like to have a greyhound friend in her forever home, but likewise Poppy could be an only dog provided she got enough human interaction daily, and was not left alone for long periods of time. ~ Other Animals ~ Generally: Great with resident canines in foster home, bit reserved with dogs out on walks, unsure of non-greyhound types and needs to learn that they are dogs. Poppy is fabulous with the 2 other greyhounds in her foster home. They share personal space just fine, play with toys and enjoy each other’s company. Poppy is confident and assertive with other greyhounds, but not at all aggressive – she simply wants a bit of respect, being an older lady, and if the greeting dog gives her that then there's no issue at all. 10 years in a greyhound kennel is a very long time in an isolated world, and as such this is Poppy’s first time seeing other dog breeds. She is having some difficulty in understanding that they really are dogs, which is a common transient issue with ex-racing greyhounds. Given lots of positive socialisation, Poppy will come to realise that although these other dogs are weirdly shaped and weirdly sized and maybe even carry a weird smell, they are still dogs. Currently Poppy is best muzzled when she’s meeting other dogs, especially small ones, but we don’t expect this to be a permanent necessity. ~ Out and About ~ Generally: Great on lead, excellent in car, gets alert if sees cat/small furry, needs socialisation with other dog breeds, excellent with people. Poppy is amazingly energetic for her 10 years, she doesn’t act old at all! She gets bouncy and even lets out a bark or two when its ‘walkie’ time, shes that happy to get out and about. She absolutely LOVES getting out to explore. She walks very well on the lead and doesn’t pull, though can get a bit whiney and alert if there are cats or small furry critters about. She is excellent in the car and is also fine with built up areas and busy traffic. ~ Where Am I? ~ Poppy is currently in foster care in Norfolk, UK. She can be homed anywhere in the UK provided we have a homechecker available, but please note that you may be required to travel to the foster home to meet and collect her. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Poppy is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. It focuses on rehoming unwanted Irish greyhounds and lurchers, as huge numbers are bred in Ireland each year and homes are few and far between.
