Lizzie
Pierce keeps getting a recurring ear infection. No amount of cleaning etc stops it, back to the vets again yesterday. Originally it was thought it could be an allergy, but yesterday we found the cause. His hair grows right down at the bottom of the ear canal! The only way it can be cleared is by using a scope to open up the ear and very fine tweezers inserted through the scope once its lined up. Poor boy put up with having it removed without fidgeting. Now for the advice bit.....does anyone's dog have this problem with hair in ears? I did ask if we could remove it, but the vet reckons it's one hell of a problem without the right equipment, even she was suprised how far down it grows! How do you cope with it? How often do you think it should be removed? I know he's a hairy little b***er, but this must be so painful for him.
lil_angel
I groom dogs that need their ears plucked - Bichons, Schnauzers etc and have a pair of forceps or use my fingers to pull the hair out. Using a powder such as Thornits helps to grip the hair. It does sound like Pierce's hair myabe further down the ear canal than I would dare to prob bless him. owl
Yes, the late great puli Mojo, Humphrey's predecessor, had such thick hair down the ear canal that it was trying to cord! Vet used a lot of cooling cream when she got it out, but I don't know what it was called.
