"your hosts file contains windows live messenger related entries which may interfere with name resolution" what does that mean and how can i sort it? Pingu Posted December 23, 2008 Report Share Posted December 23, 2008 it possibly means that your hosts file has become corrupted normally this is done by a virus or similar gizza bell and will talk you through checking it computers use something called domain name resolution (DNS) to translate what you type into your web browser etc (such as www.jaffacakesaregreat.com) into an IP address. a hosts fil is a file on a PC that can be used to force this resolution to resolve to a set address. your hosts file can normally be found in c:\wiindows\system32\drivers\etc in most circumstances it shouldnt really contain any entries. some viruses and trojans will add entries to the file so that they can fool programmes into connecting to incorrect servers. there are legitimate entries that can be added too though Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
