It reminds me of many years ago when I worked for a rescue, a local tramp came in one day in tears because his dog had died. His clothes were tatty and he slept wherever he could find shelter. He asked if we would let him have a dog. He explained that somedays he didn't have a lot to eat but whatever he had in life he would share with his dog. After a bit of a discussion it was decided to let him have a puppy and arranged that he would pop in every week to collect food for it. He went away with a look on his face I'll never forget.
