Rudi
I have a 13 year old spayed bitch who has developed scurfy skin and little scabs, mainly on her back and sides She has also got some scurfy skin on her tummy around her nipples. Her tummy and nipples have been quite red lately and she has a hard cyst I've been told to keep an eye on. I've taken her to the vet twice about her tummy and have been given antibiotics for her skin but they didn't really work. I've been putting aloe vera directly from a plant onto her tummy and that seems to have worked but it's not really practical or possible to do that to the rest of her. She doesn't have fleas and doesn't scratch or lick herself outside of the norm. She's fed a varied raw diet (meat, fish, vegetables, bones) with occasional supplements of vitamins/minerals and flax or cod liver oil. She has occasional Metacam as she's a bit stiff around her backend these days. The only other unusual thing is that she's been dragging her bottom a lot - she does have a problem with her anal glands but these were only emptied a couple of weeks ago. Obviously I'm happy to take her back to the vet again but wondered if anyone had any advice or could suggest some more 'natural' remedies/shampoos etc., first I had a look at Crufts but there's so many on the market it's mind boggling Thanks very much Jo
Muriel
How about buying a tube of aloe vera gel? Antibiotics rarely help skin conditions. Perhaps add some fish oil to her diet? Or tins of sardines in oil, whatever.. Nettles are good for allergic type stuff - 1/2 teaspoon of dried nettles in a cup, pour boiling water over, cool, add to food. Sillymooo
you could maybe try some t-gel. its for itchy flakey scalps on humans, contains ingrediants to cool and take away any itching there may be.

jane-f
Try the coal tar and sulpher shampoo's, i've used the one you can buy at the chemist, its called polytar, its simmler to the dog shampoos, but works out cheeper, it does stink though. KathyM
Holland and Barrett have an offer on at the minute on Aloe Vera Gel (£2.24 for a fairly big tube) and Evening Primrose Oil capsules (£4.99 for a biiig tub). I bought some yesterday in anticipation of Seth coming. EPO worked wonders for Ruby's coat, as did Cod Liver Oil and sardines/pilchards in her diet. Do you think her itchiness could be food related? Dharma gets bad skin when she's eaten something she doesn't "do" well.
Rudi
Hi, Thanks for the suggestions. I took her back to the vet yesterday as she also has a nasty wart/moley thing that has been weeping lately The vet looked at her skin and says it's an infection, so Amber's going to go in on Monday and have some cells drawn off the wart and if she has to have it removed, they will do a skin biopsy while she is anaesthetised. Otherwise, she will have some shampoo but he thought it better to wait to see if the biopsies would take place before shampooing if that makes sense!! She quite comfy, no scratching or anything. Rudi
Found out on Tuesday Amber's condition is skin lymphoma not sure what to expect or how much longer I can hope to keep her, I expect every case is different but if anyone has had experience with this, I'd be grateful. Muriel
First thing I would do is also talk to a Homeopathic/Holistic Vet, to find one try here http://www.bahvs.com/ http://www.trusthomeopathy.org/trust/tru_over.html I'd also make sure her diet is as pure as possible - no additives, colourings, preservatives etc, preferably real food, google cancer diets. No chemical flea/worm treatments etc, generally try to make sure as few as possible further toxins get into her body. Boost her immune system - vit c, echinacea etc...... There are loads of other natural things can help cancer, here are some.. http://www.shirleys-wellness-cafe.com/acancer.htm http://www.canine-health-concern.org.uk/ http://theherbs.info/Pets/pets.html http://www.thefountainoflife.ws/ http://www.herbal-treatments.com.au/human_treatments.html I did a quick google for you http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lymphoma_in_animals http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skin http://uk.search.yahoo.com/search?p=skin+l...mp;fr=ush1-mail Sending Reiki if she'd like it.
