As most of you know Ice has been diagnosed with severe hip dysplasia. He has been getting an awful lot of pain with it which you would expect. He is currently takin seraquin and rimadyl. We can't up his rimadyl as he is on the maximum dose he can have for his weight, but, he's still suffering :mecry: I have absolutely no clue when it comes to alternative therapies but, i'm desperate to keep him happy and free from pain. Some days he's so depressed he won't come out of his bed :mecry:

What can i give him which will be safe for him to take with his rimadyl and seraquin, and where can i buy it? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading :flowers:

Are you sure the Rimadyl is actually helping? And is the vet running regular tests for liver and kidney damage? Although it helps some dogs, others it makes worse ands causes other problems.

Have you tried Hydrotherapy? Magnetic Collar?

There are many things that may help, but I'd think the best place to start is a Homeopathic Vet. To find one, try here...

http://www.trusthomeopathy.org/trust/tru_over.html

I'll paste in all the stuff I did for Arthritis with my old girl, some of it may be helpful.....

What worked for my old lady dog was Runaround from Stock Nutrition, which is Green Lipped Mussel, Shark Cartilage, Vitamins C & E. Within 5 days on that, she was trotting a couple of miles, with no trace of a limp, having previously only been able to stagger to the end of the road on very shaky pins, where she was lying down to watch the traffic while on Metacam. She was great on the Runaround for a couple of years.

Then her legs got worse again and I added in Garlic, Greenleaf Tablets from Denes, Osteotrace tablets from ARONHA, got her a magnetic collar, used crystals – Blue Lace Agate to start with, and others, she also had Acupuncture for months, but I eventually stopped that and did acupressure on her myself after having been shown by an Acupuncturist how and where would be most beneficial. These were all added in at various times as the need arose. She also latterly had Reiki which helped enormously and I believe gave her an extra 6 months with me.

There are loads of natural products and therapies out there which I am sure would help enormously. The trick is, as ever, finding the right thing for YOUR dog, which is where your gut comes in – you’ll know what’s right.

Homeopathy can also work wonders. Hannah just didn’t want it, she preferred herbs etc.

The book which helped me a lot and sent me in various correct directions for Hannah is - Natural Healthcare for Pets by Richard Allport (available from the library). He covers a wide range of natural therapies and is based in Potters Bar, he’s one of the top Natural Vets. Had I kept Hannah on Metacam, she would have been dead by 12 as the Vet prophesied, but once I changed her to natural treatments she was MUCH happier, healthier, fitter and had a much greater quality of life. She lived to 15 years and 6½ weeks!

Runaround is available from Stock Nutrition www.doghealth.co.uk Phone 08000 744302 They are very helpful.

Denes website is www.denes.com Phone 01273 325364 They also have a range of Factsheets which they will send out free of charge very quickly if you ask. They’re also very helpful.

I know Glucosamine can be great too.

Some other products I believe can be helpful are :

Mobileaze www.aviform.co.uk I know someone who has used this very successfully with her Weimaraners. Cortaflex

Synflex

Ease by Phytopet 01244 813162 email [email protected]

Deer Velvet www.velvetenergy.com

Copper Collars help some dogs, but obviously not at the same time as a magnetic one!

Fish oil can help too.

I'll send Reiki if he wants it.

Thanks muriel :flowers:

He has had accupuncture. My vet does do that. He did seem a bit better after having it but the effects only lasted about 30-45 minutes. Purple mog has very kindly offered to come down and do some accupressure on him for me. To be honest i thought homeopathy and herbs were the same thing :blush02:

He has had some bloods done about 6 weeks ago. They tested his liver and kidney functions then. I'll have a read of the information links you've given and i'll have a look for a magnetic collar for him.

Thankyou :flowers:

I bought Layla a magnetic collar last week. She was diagnosed with spondylosis in December, I know she isn't suffering or in pain but cannot do the things she loved to do. I don't know if it is co-incidence but over the last 2 days she has seemed more like her old self.

I'm praying it is not wishful thinking but so pleased to see her playing like this and not having an adverse reaction.

Well, the magnetic collar's not doing her any harm!! So pleased for you :) She's a lovely lady too.

Tracey, hope something helps. Hopefully folk with HD experience will be along soon.

As Ange says, a piccy would be great :)

aha! so purplemog does acupressure? Wish I'd known that before, I suspect she'll be getting a pm

Lily used to take Rimadyl for her arthritis, she got more and more depressed and both I and the vet assumed she was in horrendous pain. She used to look like Eeyore - nose and tail to the ground. During the required week gap between finishing the rimady and starting the next medication, Lily suddenly became a happy dog - she couldn't walk far at all but her attitude to life changed altogether. It is meant to be quite rare but the rimadyl itself can make dogs very depressed.

Different drugs suit different dogs, almost everything has a side effect but hopefully you can make an informed decision.

Swimming and physio have been a big help for Lily, the hydro pool apparently see a lot of dogs with HD.

I did ask the vet if the rimadyl could be causing depression but she said it was the pain. I don't think it is. I'm not saying he's not in pain because he is... but, it's something else. I can't explain it i just have a gut feeling it's the rimadyl. I've rung her yesterday and today to ask her if i can give him liquid synflex. I also wanted to ask her about zubrin. She wasn't there yesterday and she's on holiday now for 2 weeks. so, i don't know what will happen about the resuts from the specialist

I'm just stuck at the minute and it's pi**ing me off. If i give him half a rimadyl he's brighter but in more pain and if i give him the full rimadyl he's fed up but pain free :(

I would try hydrotherapy but he's scared of water  I'll see if i can entice him into the local river.

Reiki would be great thankyou ange and muriel :flowers:

When you have a gut feeling like that, you have to go with it. He's your dog and he's telling you what's up, listen to him :) He's soaking up the Reiki. If he was mine I'd give him the Synflex if that's what your gut is telling you he needs. Have you contacted a Homeopathic Vet yet?

Loads of Reiki on the way.

It was when Lily swapped to Zubrin that we discovered the problem with rimadyl - there is some technical reason that dogs need to have a weeks break between stopping rimadyl and starting Zubrin. I'd book to see the stand in vet, at least you will know what the specialist said.

The staff at hydro pools are used to dogs who are scared of the water, if you have one local to you, phone and speak to them for advice. They would need a referal from your vet first.

He's not having a very good night. :mecry: No wonder he's soaking up all your reiki. :( I've got the homeopathic vets number off the list you gave me muriel, and i'm going to call her in the morning. I've ordered some synflex anyway, i just need to make sure it's safe to use with the rimadyl or if i have to take him off the rimadyl before he can have the synflex  Will his insurance cover the homeopathic vet? I'll have to check the policy.

He's laid in is bed looking all woe is me and he's refused his pigs ear as well  He snapped at maisie earlier on so, i'm keeping her out of his wayfor now. Hopefully the reiki will start helping him soon :)

Karen, I don't think there's a hydrotherapy pool near us  I shall go have a nose around and see what i can find out :flowers:

Im sorry to hear about Ice :(

My Rottie, Murphy, is also on Rimadyl and Seraquinand I have given him Synlex too but I have ordered some Cortaflex today as I have heard that is very good.

Murphy has had 2 x TPLO ops (snapped cruiciates) and an op to fix a luxating patella all in the last 18 months but I have noticed a slight change in him over the last 6 weeks andhe has air snapped a couple of times (I think his hips may be going too) - Im going to be seeing my vet next week and asking a few more questions about the Rimadyl.

I hope Ice feels better soon and hugs to you too as I know how stressed it makes us :flowers:

  • 4 weeks later...

Layla has a cartophen injection which usually lasts about 6 months. She is on cosequin which I've now cut back to one a day. My vet tells me to stop the cosequin if she has rimadyl. Touchwood she is still doing well with her magnetic collar, we went for a really long walk on saturday and she bounced into the car. I have everthing crossed that this continues but I have been told that spondylosis can plateau for a long while. I still notice her gait is not right at the back but so far no more pain from her HD. (says she touching her head, touchwood) Hope Ice gets some relief and help from either the pool or the homeopathic vet. Thank you for your comment about Layla - she is an extremely tolerant and loving babe.
