1. SID **UPDATED: AUGUST 2012** Sid is a lovely 2 year old lurcher boy who has come to us from another rescue in Ireland. Sid was originally taken out of death row in a local pound, and was very underweight and scared. It is now several months later, and Sid is looking just superb. He is a healthy boy with a beautiful brindle coat and a very striking face. ~ Personality ~ Though physically recovered from his ordeal, Sid still has a few physiological scars that need healing. He has hugely improved during his time spent in the Irish rescue, and became very affectionate with all the rescue staff, but he does remain scared and untrusting of some unfamiliar men. If initially ignored and then approached in a calm, steady way, Sid is good with men and accepts them fine. But if he is approached quickly by an unfamiliar man, or if men shout or move suddenly around him, he will try to bolt. There is no aggression in Sid at all, he is just very scared and tries to run away. If running away is not an option, he will try to avoid the situation and stay very close to his familiar handler. Sid is also currently quite reactive to the environment around him when out on walks. Again, there is no aggression in him, but he does vocalise his frustration or anxiety at being on a lead and unable to meet every dog he sees. He can also be strong on the lead during these periods of excitability. What Sid needs is a patient, calm but consistent owner who knows that these issues are just the rough edges around a beautiful personality within. Sid can be very affectionate and loving if given the chance to settle and show himself. With steady work and firm but not harsh corrections, and lots of tasty treats, Sid can overcome these issues. Right now he just doesn’t know what is being asked of him, and in fact doesn’t know how to work with people very well. He is a young, clever dog, however, and has strong potential to learn that people won’t hurt him and will even give lovely rewards if he does what is asked of him. Yes this boy has some rough edges that need work, but that will make him shine all the brighter when he finally becomes that well-adjusted, happy-go-lucky lad we all know is possible. ~ In the Home ~ Sid has not yet been in a home environment yet, though we are aiming to get him into a foster home as soon as possible. This boy won’t improve in kennels, he heeds the one-on-one attention that can only come from a loving home. New owners will need to be a bit understanding at the start and give him time to learn the house rules. ~ Other Animals ~ Sid is very good with other dogs when allowed to meet them. He has not shown any aggression with us and is a lovely playful dog when given the chance to socialise offlead. When Sid sees other dogs in the distance, he can get frustrated by the lead as it prevents him from greeting them as he normally would, and this can cause him to pull or vocalise. From a distance this might not look very friendly, but really Sid just wants to be able to say hi. He has not been tested with cats yet. ~ Out and About ~ When out in the ‘real world’ Sid is at his weakest. If surrounded by other dogs, he is significantly calmer and happier, but he will become nervous, frustrated and/or anxious if being walked past dogs or people he can't meet, or if being walked on his own. Sid obviously had a bad start to life and we feel he wasn’t socialised as a young puppy should. However, if you just give him a chance, Sid has tons of potential to improve on this, he just needs to be shown how to deal with these situations. ~ Where Am I? ~ Sid is currently in kennels in Norfolk. He can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you may be required to travel to our rescue to meet and collect him. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Sid is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. This dear boy would benefit so very much from a chance to live in a foster home and Kerry Greyhounds UK is always eager for new foster volunteers. It is an extremely rewarding experience and costs are covered by us. 2. HENRY **UPDATED: AUGUST 2012** Henry is a beautiful black lurcher boy who is just 3 years old. Henry had a tough start to life and was found straying in bad condition in Ireland. Now, however, Henry is a beautiful shiny boy whose sleek black coat is a beacon of health. He is a medium sized lurcher and has a lovely strong but elegant build. Henry also has the most stunning bright amber eyes that really contrast beautifully against his black coat. ~ Personality ~ Henry has had a tough start to life but he is working hard on getting over this hump. He isn’t in your face about asking for attention, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t loving, Henry is very loyal and affectionate with ‘his’ people, and is sure to make a fantastic best friend once that bond is formed. He is social, quiet and content in busy situations and is always happy to meet other dogs and be petted by people. In short, it may take this boy a bit longer to get to know you, but if you give him that time you are rewarded with a beautifully loyal, lifelong friend. ~ In the Home ~ Henry has not yet been in a home environment, so new owners will need to be a bit understanding at the start and give him time to learn the house rules. All he needs is a bit of time to be allowed to settle and readjust, and we’re sure once this boy discovers the comfort of sofa’s it might be hard to get him up in the morning! He is a cuddly boy and loves curling up with his lurcher friend Grace when it’s time for bed. ~ Other Animals ~ Henry is very good with other dogs and has never caused any trouble. He is very happy to meet new dogs when out and about, and relies heavily on his best friend Grace, another lurcher looking for a home. They have formed a lovely bond that has allowed Henry to adjust to his changing surroundings better than if he were on his own. As such, we feel Henry would do best in a home with another dog present to show him the ropes, so to speak. Henry has not yet been tested with cats but this will be carried out soon. He has been in kennels located right next to horses, donkeys and sheep and never bothered with any of them. ~ Out and About ~ Henry is a good boy when out in the real world. He is quiet and calm but not nervous, just content to watch the goings-on and greet whomever comes up to him. After the initial excitement has worn off, Henry walks well on the lead. He also travels very well in the car and is a pleasure to take with you. Once Henry has bonded with his new owners, he has great potential for recall training and may be suitable to be let offlead in a safe area. ~ Where Am I? ~ Henry is currently in kennels in Norfolk. He can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you may be required to travel to our rescue to meet and collect him. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Henry is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. 3. CASPER **UPDATED: AUGUST 2012** Meet the glorious Casper! He is a lovely fluffy lurcher who is approx. 3 years old. Casper was rescued out of the pound so we don’t have much history on him. He came to rescue quite thin with a patchy coat covered in old welts and healing wounds. That was a few months ago however, and Casper is definitely 100% ready for his forever family to come along. He has put on weight, gotten nice and fit, and has a beautiful silky fawn coat that is starting to glisten in the sun. Casper is quite a big boy at 28” to the shoulder. There has been a big debate as to what his mix is, but we think he may be borzoi x collie mix, perhaps with some saluki and retriever in there too! ~ Personality ~ Casper has SUCH a personality, you could write essays on him! He is gentle and friendly, very social and good with everyone and everything except cats. He really is a super dog with super potential to be that dream dog for someone. Casper is a perfect gent with children and doesn’t jump up or get boisterous around them. As such, he could live happily in a home with children over the age of 8. Casper is one of those beautiful dogs that is good and mannered but still has just enough ‘quirk’ to keep you on your toes! Its hard not to smile at this guy’s antics, and he keeps his fosterers well entertained. Casper loves toys, especially squeakers, and will play and romp around the garden with gusto before coming inside for a good long snooze. Like most lurchers, Casper loathes the rain, and like many lurchers, he is a rather devious food thief who will rob any unsupervised dinner. This is a habit that can be overcome and his foster parents have been working with him on it. ~ In the Home ~ Casper is generally very well behaved in the house and, apart from his countersurfing habit, he doesn’t cause any trouble or hassle. He is happy to snooze away after his morning walk and also after his mad moments of garden zoomies. He is fully housetrained and can be left with other dogs for company. He isn’t keen on being separated from his pack, however, and care will need to be taken with his new family so that he doesn’t become overly clingy, a behaviour that can lead to separation anxiety. Kerry Greyhounds UK have a behaviourist on hand to give advice on how to avoid this potential problem should you need it. ~ Other Animals ~ Casper is a dog savvy, sociable boy who really enjoys his canine company. He is currently sharing his foster home with 5 other dogs that include huskies and salukis, and is good with them all. He can become the play police if groups of 3 or more dogs are playing together, and likes to dictate how the play will be run, but he is not overly dominant and there is no malice in him at all. He loves to play with other dogs and would do very well in a home with one or several other dogs present to play and interact with. He might not be best homed with a very dominant male, but a bossy lady should be well tolerated. ~ Out and About ~ Casper is a total star when out and about. He is gentle, friendly, polite and calm, loving other people and animals alike. He is a very pretty looking gent and tends to attract lots of attention when out, which he soaks up like a great big fawn sponge! Casper walks well on the lead and travels good in the car. Bringing this boy out with you is pure pleasure. Casper can be let offlead in a secure area and has good recall. He will run around doing his own thing but always comes back to check in every now and then. Once he has bonded with his new family, Casper has great potential to be safe offlead provided there are no roads or livestock in the area. ~ Where Can I Live? ~ Casper is a very adaptable boy who could slot in to a range of home types. He would do well in a balanced pack of dogs, but could also likely adapt to living as an only dog provided he got a decent daily quota of human interaction – Casper loves his people. He can adapt to an active household with many walks a day, but also doesn’t mind if he only gets 1-2 short walks a day with offlead runs once or twice a week. This flexible boy is truly fantastic and has sooo much potential for his new family. He is a five-star hound! ~ Where Am I? ~ Casper is currently in a foster home in Norwich. He can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you may be required to travel to his foster home to meet him. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Casper is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. If you are interested in adopting Casper, please visit our website’s Adoption Page: http://s300889640.websitehome.co.uk/uk/adoption.html for information and instructions on our homing procedures. 4. MAXI **UPDATED: AUGUST 2012** Meet the fabulous Maxi. She is a 4 year old greyhound girl who only ran a few races before looking for her forever sofa. Sadly Maxi thought she had found her forever family but has now had to come back to us as she was getting uneasy around the family’s children. This dear lady is looking for a slightly quieter home to retire to. Maxi has a stunning blue fawn coat with striking eyes. She is a very beautiful girl and quite the eye turner. She is also in stunning condition right now and is the very image of good health. Maxi when she first came to us: Maxi now: ~ Personality ~ In short, Maxi is just super. She adores everyone and everything and loves to be loved. She enjoys interacting with people and is very responsive. Maxi is a real joy to be with and loves her cuddles. She is understandably a bit confused right now as to why she finds herself away from her family, she is taking the changes very well and remains a gorgeous girl. Though unnerved by the children in her previous home, Maxi is fine and excellently behaved when meeting children out on walks, she just needs some quiet time in her own home so that she can truly relax. Someone will be in for a real treat with this girl, she is a complete gem. ~ In the Home ~ Dear Maxi was very well behaved in her previous home, and has all the basic commands and house rules downpat. She is housetrained, quiet through the night, non-destructive and is ok to be left with other dogs for company. She has never been completely alone, but living as an only dog is not out of the realms of possibility, Maxi will just need some time and training to adjust to being by herself. Maxi also loves to play and shares her toys nicely with other people and canines. She adores her food and will listen very carefully if you have a tasty treat in your hand! ~ Other Animals ~ Maxi is excellent with all the other dogs she has met, large and small. She shared her previous home with 2 terriers, so she is used to a bit of rough and tumble. Out on walks, Maxi is very polite and mannerly when meeting other dogs. She loves making new friends. This girl would slot very well into an existing pack of dogs, and would also be a great companion for a lonely dog. ~ Out and About ~ Like most greyhounds, Maxi is a low energy dog and so will not need a huge amount of exercise. She will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch her legs offlead in a secure area once or twice a week. If she has someone to play with, she is very happy to have some romps in the garden before flopping down for a snooze. Likewise with toys, she will have a few zooms around with a squeaky toy before wanting to stretch out and relax. Maxi loves the car too and is a brilliant traveller. ~ Out and About ~ Maxi is a really gorgeous girl with a super personality, and we hope she’s not waiting too long before finding her new family. Her ideal home would be one which enjoys going for long but relaxed walks, has another one or two canine buddies to play with, and has no young kiddies. Maxi would be fine to live with older teenagers, it’s just younger children who want to play all the time that can stress her. This girl is guaranteed to be a fantastic addition to the right household, she has so much potential and, most importantly, oodles of love to give you. ~ Where Am I? ~ Maxi is currently in kennels in Norfolk, UK. She can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you will be required to travel to us in Norfolk to meet her. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Maxi is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. This girl would greatly benefit from being in a foster home, and Kerry Greyhounds UK is always in desperate need of new fosterers. It is such a rewarding experience, and costs are covered by the rescue. 5. DEXIE **UPDATED: 8TH JULY 2012** The striking Dexie is a large 9 month old greyhound pup who has found his way over to us from Ireland along with his sister Della. Dexie has a pristine white coat and black patches that makes the white shine all the brighter, and its amazingly soft. He really is a gorgeous boy, with a perfectly placed black patch on his head which means he has one black and one white ear. Dexie has a very endearing little expression that is very hard to resist! ~ Personality ~ Dexie, or ‘Dexie Bobble’ as he has become known, has been in his foster home now for 7 weeks. He has proved to be an incredibly affectionate, loving boy who absolutely adores children and craves company. He is very dog savvy and listens to a telling off without trouble. He also adores his toys and has great fun romping around with his foster family. Dexie has the potential to be a fantastic family dog and could live with children over the age of 8. When Dexie first arrived he was very lacking in confidence and scared of being left. He needed constant reassurance from his foster family for the first few weeks, but is now starting to get over this hump. He is still only a puppy who didn’t have the best start in life, but is now really starting to make some headway in getting over his rough beginnings. In the right family, Dexie is guaranteed to flourish. ~ Medical Issues ~ Dear Dexie has slightly malformed front legs which are due to a congenital defect in the growth plates of his legs. The growth plates have not formed 100% correctly, giving him slightly odd shaped wrists. Dexie has been examined by two separate vets who both concur that this mild deformity should not pose him any problems, though may increase his chances of developing arthritis in his twilight years. Dexie runs and plays as a very normal puppy and is completely unfazed by the defect. We hope that you are as unfazed by his slightly lumpy legs! ~ In the Home ~ Dexie has found the transition from kennel to house a bit more difficult than his sister, and initially developed an upset tummy from the stress of it all. He can get rather anxious at times, and does not like being left completely alone. Right now he craves constant company and does show signs of separation anxiety if left as an only dog. These signs will diminish as he continues to settle, gain self-confidence, and learn that he is safe and secure in his foster home. Already he can be left for up to 2hrs with other dogs and not cause any hassle. The darling Dexie would really benefit most from finding his forever home ASAP, as the more attached he gets to his foster family, the harder the upheaval is going to be for him when he has to move again. Apart from this, Dexie is a darling boy to keep you company and is a constant delight when he has his family around him. He loves to snuggle and give kisses, and is working on perfecting his perfect roach pose! He is learning the do’s and don’ts of home life, is getting better at not chewing unwanted items and no longer counter surfs. He has also just about mastered his toilet training and will whine if he needs to go out. He is a young pup with oodles of potential to learn and grow with the right family. ~ Other Animals ~ Dexie is sharing his foster home with several other dogs and has relied heavily on their guidance during his transition into family life. It is likely this young boy will need another dog already present in his future home, and we expect he would slot brilliantly into an existing pack. Dexie is excellent with other dogs of all sizes, though sometimes forgets how big he is himself and can be all paws and elbows, which can be not so fun for a smaller dog. He loves to play with other young dogs, but would also benefit from an older role model to learn from. Dexie Bobble has not been tested with cats yet, but it is thought that he could live with a confident cat who won’t let him get too boisterous. He is currently living with 3 guinea pigs and pays them no attention. ~ Out and About ~ Dexie loves getting out to explore the world, and he is greatly enjoying his walks. His fosterer is working with his lead training which is coming along nicely. He is a super social, friendly boy who is bursting to make friends with everyone and everything he meets. He has so much love to give that he will pull to go and greet dogs and people he meets on his walks, but remember he is still just a puppy and he is learning that not everyone will want to say hi. With some work on bonding and recall, Dexie will be able to be let offlead. With some work from his current fosterer, Dexie now settle well in the car and enjoys his road trips. ~ Where Can I Live? ~ Like all puppies Dexie will need a home with someone there during the day to keep an eye on him and give him the company he craves. He would be great in a home with another dog(s) already present to show him the ropes and give him someone to lean on. As he has so much playful energy, he would be a fantastic play buddy for another young dog. This playful energy together with his large size means Dexie would not be the best dog for a family with young children. There is no malice in him at all, but he is a clumsy adolescent who isn’t shy about showing his love for people, and this can mean he may bowl kiddies over without even realising it. As Dexie has shown separation anxiety and will become destructive when left completely alone, he will need a home where someone, human or canine, there all day so he can feel secure. He will need owners prepared to continue the work of his foster parents if he is to be left for longer periods without hassle. It may be a bit of a fine line between giving him company and reassurance without slowing his developing confidence and giving him space to grow himself. We do have a behaviourist available to help you with this should you consider giving this boy his forever home. Once this issue is mastered, however, there is absolutely nothing at all stopping Dexie from becoming an excellent greyhound role model – he is perfect in every other way. ~ Where Am I? ~ Dexie is being fostered in Norfolk. He can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you may be required to travel to his foster home to meet him. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Dexie neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. If you are interested in adopting Dexie, please visit our website’s Adoption Page: http://s300889640.we...k/adoption.html for information and instructions on our homing procedures. 6. ROSE **UPDATED: JUNE 2012** Little Rose is a 3 year old greyhound girl who has never raced. She is a lovely black girl with a white heart on her chest. Rose’s coat is a bit dull and moth-eaten right now, but we hope that will improve with some good food and TLC. ~ Personality ~ Rose is a new girl to our rescue and we are still getting to know her. So far she has been just super with everyone and hasn’t put a toe wrong. She loves getting attention and lives for her walks. We will update with more on this lady once we get to know her more. ~ In the Home ~ Dear Rose has not been in a home environment before, so new owners will need to be a bit patient during the first couple of weeks and allow her time to settle in and learn the home rules. It generally takes 10-14 days for new greyhounds to start to settle down in a home, and really all they need is a bit of time and patience. We hope to get Rose into a foster home in the near future, and we will update with more info on her then, assuming she hasn’t already been snapped up of course! ~ Other Animals ~ Rose is very good with other dogs, regardless of size. She is quite calm and very well mannered, and is a good, steady dog when around other canines. She has not yet been cat tested, but this will be carried out soon as she may be cat friendly. ~ Out and About ~ Like most greyhounds, Rose likes her snoozes and will not need a huge amount of exercise. She will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch her legs offlead in a secure area once or twice a week. ~ Greyhounds as Pets ~ In general greyhounds are calm, mannerly dogs that are well used to being handled. They can fit very well in to a wide range of different lifestyles and usually adjust to the home life very quickly. Their soft, easy going nature often makes them ideal to live in a family with children, while their love of lazing around and low exercise requirements can make them perfect for the elderly. Greyhounds also don’t shed as much as other more popular dog breeds and this can make them suitable to live with allergy sufferers. ~ Where Am I? ~ Rose is currently being kennelled in Norfolk, UK. She can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you will be required to travel to us in Norfolk to meet her. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Rose is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. This girl would greatly benefit from being in a foster home, and Kerry Greyhounds UK is always in desperate need of new fosterers. It is such a rewarding experience, and costs are covered by the rescue. 7. GRETCHEN **UPDATED: 5th JULY 2012** The lovely Gretchen is an ex-racing greyhound girl who has just turned 4 years old. She is a pretty fawn lady with kind eyes and a healthy coat ~ Personality ~ Gretchen is a very shy little girl who needs a patient, loving home. She takes a bit of time to come out of herself and does not currently have much trust for people, especially strangers. Once she knows you, she’s beautifully sweet and gentle, but she is clearly not used to so much human contact and is unsure of how to approach people. Gretchen has very recently moved into a foster home, and this complete upheaval from everything she knows has stressed her. She had never been in a home before, so is understandably needing time to adjust to the huge change and to get used to being surrounded by new people. Right now she is shy and uncertain, preferring to stand off to the side and observe the situation. We hope to see her come out of her shell over the next few weeks as she gets used to her foster parents. Gretchen has oodles of love to give to anyone who takes the time to bond with her, and she desperately needs someone to love and trust. ~ In the Home ~ Gretchen has found the transition from kennel to home very stressful, and needs some time and a patience to come out of herself. Every single thing is new to her, and it is sadly now apparent that she has not received much human attention or contact in her previous 4 years. Right now if approached she will try to run away, and if that option is not available she will simply freeze and stand until you are done handling her. She is in no way aggressive, but does not yet enjoy the interactions either. She is not currently responsive to words or gestures and does not trust people. This little girl’s lifeline right now is the other greyhound she is sharing her foster home with. Gretchen follows her foster sister around and watches how she interacts with people. She is learning what to do and where to go within the home, taking all her cues from her greyhound friend. As such, Gretchen will need to go to a home with at least one other confident, adjusted dog present to show her the ropes and help support her. Though having only been in her foster home for 10 days, Gretchen is already house trained and clean through the night. She is very quiet and tries so hard to be a ‘good dog’; it’s just that right now she doesn’t understand what people want from her. With lots of time and patience, this girl is sure to be a gem. When she realises what you want her to do, she will do her level best to achieve it. It will just take a bit of time to break through her barriers and earn her trust. ~ Other Animals ~ Gretchen is very well behaved with other dogs regardless of shape or size. She may not be the most playful of the bunch, but if given more time we think she will start to show some interest in toys. As already mentioned, it is vital that Gretchen go to a home with another dog or two already present to help her transition into your home. She is a lovely, amiable girl who is dog savvy and content to share her space and belongings. She has not been tested with cats yet, but this can be carried out if needed. ~ Out and About ~ Gretchen walks very well on the lead when she’s not frightened. If something spooks her, she will stop and freeze, and needs to be gently coaxed out of herself. If approached by people on the street, she will choose her option B: freeze and stand until the person is finished with her. She sadly does not currently get much joy out of these interactions, but that happiness will come once her fear disappears. Like most greyhounds, Gretchen will not need a huge amount of exercise. She will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch her legs offlead in a secure area once or twice a week. If you think you can offer this girl the love, patience and security that she desperately needs, please do contact us. Gretchen is a special little lady who will be so incredibly rewarding and loyal if given a bit of love, guidance, and a space on your sofa. ~ Where Am I? ~ Gretchen is currently being fostered in Norfolk, UK. She can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you will be required to travel to her foster home to meet her. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Gretchen is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. 8. STYLE **UPDATED: MAY 2012** Meet the beautiful Style. She is a 4 year old ex-racing greyhound girl who is no longer good enough to compete on the track, so needs to find a loving home. Style lives up to her name with her beautiful amber eyes and quirky ears that can on occasion have a mind of their own! ~ Personality ~ Style is a real sweetheart and is just begging for a home to call her own. She is a little shy to begin with but when she gets to know you rest assured you will be completely smothered in kisses! Once she realises she can trust you, Style is a beautifully affectionate, loving lady who is very good at gently worming her way into your heart. We hope she won’t have to wait too long for her forever home. ~ In the Home ~ Style has not been in a home environment before, so new owners will need to be a bit patient during the first couple of weeks and allow her time to settle in and learn the home rules. It generally takes 10-14 days for new greyhounds to start to settle down in a home, and really all they need is a bit of time and patience. ~ Other Animals ~ Style is well behaved with the other greyhounds in the kennels and enjoys their company. She has not been tested with small dogs or cats but these can be carried out prior to adoption if required. ~ Out and About ~ Style walks very nicely on the lead and is happy to trot alongside you. Like most greyhounds, she will not need a huge amount of exercise. ~ Style is currently being kennelled in Norfolk, UK. She can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you will be required to travel to us in Norfolk to meet her. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Style is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. This girl would greatly benefit from being in a foster home, and Kerry Greyhounds UK is always in desperate need of new fosterers. It is such a rewarding experience, and costs are covered by the rescue. 9. POSIE **UPDATED: 2nd July 2012** Meet the lovely Posie. She is a 2 year old ex-racing greyhound girl who was not fast enough for the track. She is now looking for a pet home to call her own. Posie is a striking brindle girl with beautiful eyes and an intelligent expression. She is in very good condition and has been well looked after before coming to us. ~ Personality ~ Posie is a lovely girl, very sweet and affectionate. She likes interacting with people and loves getting fuss and cuddles. As Posie settles into her foster home, her character continues to grow. She is a lovely young dog with oodles of potential if given the chance. ~ In the Home ~ Posie has been in her foster home for 7 weeks now, and is doing well. She is gradually adjusting to the changes, having never experienced living in a home before, and is learning that she will get regular meals and regular love. Initially Posie was quite anxious about what she considered highly coveted luxuries, such as food, toys, or being able to sleep on a soft duvet. This led to her getting tense and grumpy if another dog approached her at certain times. Posie’s foster parents have been working with her on this, and she is making good progress. Really this issue should dissipate once she realises that she will get fed twice a day every day, no matter what, and there's no need to put so much value on a doggie bed. Posie needs gentle handling and, with a bit of time, she will loosen up and relax. In other aspects of home life, Posie is doing great. She is learning to respond to her foster parent’s body language, and picks up hints for when its walk or bed time. She is very happy to potter around after her foster parents and watch the regular household activities such as dusting or washing dishes. Posie is currently an only dog, and is fine with being left for up to 4hrs with a stuffed kong to occupy herself. She is not destructive when left and is generally happy to snooze away, especially if she’s left right after a walk. Posie’s housetraining has also been a case of gradual but positive progress. She is being taken out to toilet very regularly by her foster parents, and this routine has definitely helped her. It is possible that this girl will relapse a bit when she moves to her forever home, due to stress, but she will remember the housetraining once this initial anxiety has settled down. ~ Other Animals ~ Posie is in general good with other dogs of all sizes, and enjoys going for walks with them. As already mentioned, she has been having issues with resource guarding her toys, food and bed, but this is being worked on with her foster parents. Once she realises that there's plenty of squeaky ball to go around, we think she will settle and learn that it’s more fun to share. Posie is not cat or small furry friendly. ~ Out and About ~ Posie really enjoys her walks and gets excited when she sees the lead, however this happiness can translate into overexcitement when out, and she can bark at other dogs if not corrected straight away. She will also get rather vocal if she sees a rabbit or deer, so at times she needs a fairly strong hand and corrections. Once she calms down, Posie is a good girl on the lead and responds well to gentle handling. We think that Posie is quite an active girl and some of this over-exuberance would die down if she was able to get a good sprint in 3-4 times a week in a secure area. She is only seeing the world for the first time now, having spent the first few years of her life in racing kennels, and its beautiful seeing her so happy and curious about the world around her. ~ Where Can I Live? ~ We feel Posie would be best suited to a home that has had sighthounds before and is familiar with how their minds function. She needs continued work on getting her focus back when out on walks, to prevent the vocal outbursts, and potential adopters will need to take heed of the resource guarding even though it is gradually dissipating. She would be best in a home without children because of this also. Posie is currently an only dog and is coping fine with being left for periods of time, so she could continue to be an only dog or could perhaps live with an older, mannerly dog who will see when she is under stress and leave her be. If someone has a heart big enough to see the beautiful Posie’s potential, she will be a fantastic dog to work with and improve over time. Posie loves her people and wants to be ‘a good dog’, she just needs a home who understands how she sees the world and to work with her from there. There is nothing about Posie that is unchangeable, she is simply a little rough around the edges and needs a bit more work to be that perfect greyhound. This girl has huge potential to be a fantastic family member with the right family. ~ Where Am I? ~ Posie is currently in a foster home in Norfolk, UK. She can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you will be required to travel to her foster home to meet her. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Posie is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. 10. TAZZ **UPDATED: 7th JULY 2012** Say hello to the very handsome Tazz! He is a 4 year old ex-coursing greyhound boy who is now firmly finished with the racing world and wants a family to call his own. Tazz is a very gorgeous fella, with a soft fawn coat and the most amazing ears that stand to attention when he’s listening to you! ~ Personality ~ Tazz is absolutely bursting to meet the world. He truly loves life, and is not shy about smothering you in kisses while his big helicopter tail spins in a blur. Tazz really is a super boy for the right kind of home. He is confident and full of beans, with a special part in his heart for people. Tazz adores people in all forms, though this love may be a bit overwhelming for small children and he can knock them over without realising it. The upside of this love, though, is Tazz is very biddable and will try his very best to be good once he realises what you want of him. Adding some tasty treats to this mix and you have a very trainable dog who is eager to work with you. Mr Tazz is an active dog who likes to be out investigating and discovering new things. He is not your typical lazy potato greyhound and would relish an active life with a busy family. ~ In the Home ~ Tazz has been in his foster home for 10 weeks now, and is very settled. He is housetrained, quiet through the night, is ok to be left either with other dogs or on his own, and is not destructive. He also knows the standard range of basic commands, and is happy to share his space. He is living with 3 female greyhounds and absolutely loves them all. Tazz is now enjoying all the home comforts he deserves, and as active as he is, he still loves his sofa time. Recently Tazz has discovered the joys of toys, and he now loves flinging squeaky toys around during his mad hour in the garden. He is a real clown of a dog and never fails to put a smile on your face. Tazz is the perfect dog to come home to after a stressful day at work, just ten minutes of his big goofy smile and all your troubles will be lifted! ~ Other Animals ~ Tazz is excellent with other greyhounds and adores being around his houndy friends. He enjoys their company and is very sociable, though he can be a bit of a bull in a china shop due to his happy exuberance. He will also bark when playing, though there's no malice in him. He does, however, get very excited when he sees other non-greyhound shaped dogs, simply because he has never seen them before now. It’s clear that he does not yet know that dogs can come in different shapes and sizes, and he is unsure what to make of small breeds such as terriers. When introduced to other dogs in a calmly and controlled fashion, he settles down and has walked alongside them during walks, but he is definitely still a work in progress in this area. He will need many more exposures to many other dogs before he is completely convinced that they are, in fact, dogs! He must be shown how to react and interact with them, rather than making his own mind up as that usually results in lots of barking! This is something that his potential owner will need to be aware of. They will need to be willing to continue the work of his current fosterer in order to teach Tazz about other dog breeds and thus make it possible to walk him happily in doggie areas. ~ Out and About ~ Tazz is a real gentleman on the lead, even when he sees another dog and gets excited and barky, he will never pull. He really really loves his walks and these are by far the highlight of his day. He can get excited when he sees it’s walking time, but settles down quickly and again never pulls on the lead. Tazz also loves to go in the car and settles extremely well. ~ Where Can I Live? ~ Because he is an exuberant boy who does not quite realise how big he is, it would be best if Tazz went to a home without young children as he may knock them over. A home with older kids or teenagers would be ideal, however, as they could play with him and teach him tricks. Tazz could do well as an only dog as he doesn’t seem to mind being left, and he loves his people so very much. He is great with other greyhounds too though, and could live with another hound(s) provided they don’t mind his bouncy playful nature. This dear boy will also need a hound savvy home with people who know how greyhound minds work so that he can continue to improve his socialisation skills. With the right kind of work and repetition, the beautiful Tazz has oodles of potential, and it’s a shame to see him overlooked again and again due to his one issue with other dogs. If you want an active, extrovert hound who will smother you in love at every opportunity, then Tazz may be for you. We dearly hope that his need for socialisation doesn’t turn people away from adopting this lad, as he is sure to bring years of entertainment to whomever gives him a sofa space. ~ Where Am I? ~ Tazz is currently in a foster home in Suffolk. He can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you may be required to travel to our rescue to meet and collect him. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Tazz is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. 11. JAKE **UPDATED: 3rd AUGUST 2012** Meet the handsome Jake. He is a 5 year old ex-racing greyhound boy who has worked long and hard and is now very deserving of his retirement home. Jake is a tall boy with arguably the longest neck we’ve ever seen, even for a greyhound! He has been well looked after by his previous owner, and is in beautiful health and condition. ~ Personality ~ Jake is a loving, sociable boy who doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. He has been handled kindly in the past, so has great manners and adores people, soaking up any fuss like a sponge. He is also a ‘leaner’ and loves to rest against you while you pet him. He is confident in himself and is in general a well-adjusted dog. He seems to have just recently discovered the joys of toys, and is great fun to watch clowning around with his squeaky ball. ~ In the Home ~ Jake has been in a foster home now for about 3 months, and is doing well. He slid into the home life as though he was always there, and is a very easy boy to have around the house. He has gotten the hang of housetraining and is clean through the night, asking to go out when needed. He is responsive to basic commands and has learned not to counter surf and to go out when told. He is a really lovely boy who has his loopy moments of bouncy play, but is foremost a big soft couch potato who likes to snooze and be comfortable. Jake is also very good when left, and we feel he would be suitable as a single dog and/or for people who work during the day. He is currently living as an only dog and is faultless in the home. When left alone he simply snoozes away and is not destructive. ~ Other Animals ~ Dear Jake is very good with other greyhounds and welcomes them into his foster home. He enjoys their company and is well behaved around them. Other breeds of dog, however, are another story and right now Jake is interested in chasing them. He would never have seen other breeds of dog during his racing career, and right now he is unsure what to do about them. Right now he will bark and pull on the lead when he sees them on walks. With lots of socialising and safe interactions, Jake can vastly improve with this issue, but it will take a bit of time for him to realise that dogs actually do come in all shapes and sizes. His fosterer is working on this issue on a daily basis, but this work is likely something that will need to be continued into his forever home. ~ Out and About ~ Jake walks well on the lead and will trot along to heel happily provided there are no small dogs about. If he sees anything small and moving, however, he can pull and vocaliss. Right now his fosterer is working with him to reduce this. Jake is very friendly with all people though and loves making new friends. Like most greyhounds, Jake does not need a huge amount of exercise. He will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch his legs offlead in a safe area once or twice a week. He travels well in the car and quickly settles down for long journeys. ~ Where Can I Live? ~ Because of his current issue with other dogs, Jake would be best in an experienced home with people who understand greyhounds and who have ideally had experience with this issue in the past. He will need regular, patient and repeated dog socialisation in order for him to gradually realise that all dogs are just like greyhounds, and so he will need an owner dedicated to furthering his progress. Apart from this one and only issue, Jake is the perfect gentleman and an excellent companion. He can be left alone, thus being suitable for people who work during the day, and would also live happily alongside other greyhounds. He has oodles of love to give to the right family who can overlook his dog problems and see what a beautiful, loving companion he can be. ~ Where Am I? ~ Jake is currently in a foster home in Norfolk. He can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you may be required to travel to his foster home to meet him. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Jake is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. 12. Kerry Greyhounds UK believes that, just like with other dog breeds, some greyhounds can co-exist quite happily with cats and some can't. We test our hounds with cats in a series of stages to determine to the best of our abilities whether or not our dogs can go to homes with cats. Stage 1: We try to get a history on all the hounds we take in. If the dog has no history of racing, or is claimed to have lived with cats before, we bump them to the top of the list for the next preliminary cat test. Stage 2: Preliminary cat tests are carried out with most new hounds brought in to us. This involves placing the muzzled dog in the same room as our 'tester' cat and gauging his/her reaction. Dogs that show too much interest or are too keen with the cat fail the test and are classed as unsuitable to live with them. Stage 3: Hounds that pass Stage 2 are placed on a waiting list for a foster home with a cat. Placing them in a foster home allows us to fully test how the hound will accept and react to a cat in a home setting. There is also the added bonus of introducing the hound to a home environment, usually for the first time in their lives, so they can learn about housetraining and home etiquette while being tested with the cat. Kerry Greyhounds UK has several cat foster homes which work with us to take in preliminary tested hounds and work with any that still show some issues. Hounds that pass all three stages are then termed as CAT FRIENDLY and are deemed suitable to live in a home with cats, provided some cautionary measures are taken by the owner at the start of the adoption until the dog and cat know each other (eg muzzling, just in case). We will educate and advise new owners on how to properly introduce their new hound to their cat, and we have good success rates with this method. PLEASE NOTE THAT WE PRIORITISE TO CAT HOMES IN AND AROUND THE NORFOLK AREA. Listed below are the dogs currently available for adoption at the various stages of cat testing. Potential owners are urged to make an enquiry about a dog they are interested in at around Stage 2, as once they are in their foster home; cat friendly hounds tend to get snapped up fast! I will keep this post as up to date as i can. NOTE: The details given for each hound is just a small snippet of their profile writeups. Please email me (Tam) on for their full updated bio. 13. SKYMAN **UPDATED: MARCH 2012** Meet Skyman. He is a 3 year old ex-racing greyhound boy who’s racing career is now over. He is a lean, leggy boy with a very noble face and he is sure to be an absolute stunner once his currently dull coat gets some healthy shine to it. ~ Personality ~ Skyman is new to our rescue so we are still getting to know each other. So far though, he has been a real star and a bit of a ladies man! He loves getting some fuss and attention, and enjoys getting out to see the world too. ~ In the Home ~ Skyman has not yet been in a home environment, so new owners will need to be a bit understanding at the start and give him time to learn the house rules. It generally takes greyhounds 10-14 days to start to settle in a home, and really all they need is time and patience. ~ Other Animals ~ This gorgeous boy has been very good with the other greyhounds in our kennels so far, and enjoys his daily walk with them. He does, however, get very excited when he sees other non-greyhound shaped dogs, simply because he has never seen them before now. It’s clear that he does not yet know that dogs can come in small sizes, and he is unsure what to make of small breeds. He will need many more exposures to many other dogs before he is completely convinced that they are, in fact, dogs! He is not cat friendly. ~ Out and About ~ Like most greyhounds, Skyman doesn’t have high energy levels and so does not need a huge amount of exercise. He will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch his legs offlead in a safe area once or twice a week. Right now Skyman gets happy and overexcited when out on his walks, and does pull a bit on the lead when starting out. This should settle fairly quickly once he gets more used to all the attention and when he’s getting more opportunities to let off steam in a home environment. It is being worked on right now with our volunteer dog walkers and he is already showing improvement. ~ Skyman is currently in kennels in Norfolk. He can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you may be required to travel to our rescue to meet and collect him. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Gorgeous Skyman is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. This dear boy would benefit so very much from a chance to live in a foster home and Kerry Greyhounds UK is always eager for new foster volunteers. It is an extremely rewarding experience and costs are covered by us. 14. TITCH **UPDATED: DECEMBER 2011** Titch is a small, pretty greyhound girl who wasn’t keen on the racing life. She has a striking brindle coat that is really starting to shine now that she’s in a foster home and getting lots of TLC. She turned 2 years old in March so this dear is still just a puppy with her whole life ahead of her. ~ Personality ~ Little Titch arrived to us a sensitive, nervous little girl, unsure of the world in general. She tended to watch from the sidelines, just a wee bit too afraid to join in. She will need a special, patient owner but is improving daily in her foster home. Titch has been in her foster home for a few months now, and is becoming a lovely well-adjusted little hound. She is a lovely lady, adores people and likes to be the center of attention. She soaks up any fuss you give her as though it’s her last, and seems to crave physical contact from her foster parents. She will almost fall asleep whilst having head rubs and massages, and is happiest curled up with you while you watch the telly. She still has a bit to learn, but is responsive to training with yummy treats. It’s important to know that Titch’s world has essentially been turned upside down and she will continue to slowly adjust to these changes over the next few months. She went from a racing kennel with its strict daily routine and minimal contact to living in a family home with amazing comforts and other dogs around her. Different hounds adjust to these changes in different ways, and with Titch this upheaval has resulted in her feeling insecure and anxious at times. This is manifesting as a warning growl at the other dogs in her foster home if she feels her personal space is being invaded or threatened. This growling has not amounted to anything, and is more just a vocalisation of her anxiousness at that current time. She has also had an unsettled tummy which is being attributed to her stress levels. Right now she is being fed a mild diet of cooked chicken and rice with dry Wainwright’s complete mix, and is doing better on this. She has put on some weight and is starting to fill out nicely. This little girl is also developing a cheeky streak as she continues to settle, and likes to steal shoes and socks to collect in her bed. She doesn’t chew the items she pinches, just likes collecting them for safekeeping! Her most prized possession is her foster Mum’s knitting wool, which she loves to steal again and again just so she can snuggle with it in her bed! Titch is also learning how to play and loves running about with soft toys and a ball. She is an athletic girl with an active mind that has huge potential with the right owner. ~ In the Home ~ Little Titch is now accustomed to all the household sights and sounds and seems unphased by loud noises such as fireworks. Sadly, she is quite fearful of long objects that she thinks could potentially hit her, such as brooms and rolls of Christmas wrapping paper. She will shy away from them and remain wary until the object is out of sight. This nervousness should also diminish as Titch continues to settle and learn that nothing bad will happen to her anymore. Titch is clean in the house, sleeps through the night and will stand by the back door to let you know she needs to go out. She is also learning some basic commands and is being taught to wait calmly for her supper. ~ Other Animals ~ Right now Titch is still in ‘racing hound’ mode and will chase other small furries, cats and small dogs if they are offlead. Some hounds take a bit longer than others to learn that not every moving thing needs to be chased! Her fosterers are working with her on this and she will continue to improve the more she’s socialised and exposed to other dogs being dogs. When other dogs are on leads and calm, Titch is very well behaved and does not pull to get to them no matter what their size and shape. ~ Out and About ~ In general, Titch is well behaved on the lead and walks to heel with a gentle leader headcollar. Her fosterers have walked her through their local town during busy periods and she is unphased by all the hustle and bustle, adoring anyone who stops to make a fuss of her. She also loves the car and loves to travel with her foster parents. ~ Where Can I Live? ~ Titch’s ideal home as of right now would be one with no young children due to her occasional growls, and no small dogs as she is still unsure as to what they are. She can live with larger dogs provided they are respectful of her space and her current stresses, but will need an owner who understands her current mind-set and needs. Please note that these requirements may likely change in the coming months as Titch continues to lose her anxiety and realise that she is safe in her foster home. This little girl is carrying a lot of weight on her shoulders, and we hope to see that lifted soon. There is still an awful lot of undiscovered potential in this dog, waiting to surface. She is full of surprises and is a very endearing little lady. ~ Where Am I? ~ Titch is currently in a foster home in Norfolk. Please note that adopters will need to travel to Norfolk to meet/adopt Titch. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Titch is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. 15. BOWIE **UPDATED: MARCH 2012** Bowie is a 4 year old ex-racing greyhound boy who, after running 15 races, is now finished with the racing life. Bowie has a very handsome boy with a reddish brindle coat that is very soft and silky to the touch. ~ Personality ~ Bowie is a great fella and is eager to please. He likes to get on with everyone and has settled very well into his foster home. His fosterer describes him as a confident boy with a gentle, inquisitive nature. He also really enjoys his head rubs! ~ In the Home ~ Bowie gets on very well with his foster siblings and is calm in the house. He is fully housetrained and will ask if he needs to go outside. He sleeps quietly on his bed all night and never makes a peep when left with other dogs for company. This striking brindle boy picked up the house rules very easily and is responding well to basic training. He is going to make someone a wonderful, easy going companion. ~ Other Animals ~ Bowie had not gotten much experience in meeting other dogs before he came to us, so he is still learning that they come in all shapes and sizes. Right now he is social and calm with other large and medium sized dogs, but can become overexcited upon seeing a smaller dog such as a terrier. It is obvious that he is unsure what to make of the smaller breeds, but this uncertainty will diminish as he gets lots of exposure and repetition. His fosterer is working with him on a daily basis and now he will ignore the dog and continue walking when told. He is not suitable to live with cats. ~ Out and About ~ Bowie walks well on the lead and will only pull on the odd occasion he meets a cat or squirrel. His fosterer has worked with him on this, however, and now he will ignore and continue to walk on when told. Like most greyhounds, Bowie is a low energy boy and does not need a huge amount of exercise. 16. MAURA **UPDATED: JUNE 2012** Maura is a 3 year old greyhound girl who didn’t show much interest in racing and so was handed in to KGUK to find her a family home. Maura is a very pretty black girl who’s coat is now beautifully sleek and shiny. It shimmers in the sunshine and she is a picture of health. Maura is quite a big girl at 25” to the shoulder, but can still curl up small on the couch if needed! ~ Personality ~ Maura’s fosterers describe her as a friendly, playful and affectionate hound who is very lovable and has a bit of a mischievous streak! Maura is a confident, happy girl who can be independent at times and is able to think on her feet. This does not mean she is disobedient; rather, she needs to know why you want something to be done. Maura came to her foster home with many issues, the majority of which have since resolved with consistent work and training. She is very clever and interactive, and always has a big smile on her face. Maura has adapted well to the home life, and has learned about the fun to be had in playing. Her antics with her toys keep her fosterers smiling on a daily basis, and she will often have her mad moments hurtling around the house like a tornado only to flop down and chillax a few minutes later. Maura truly loves people and is always ready to give affection. She will rush up to greet her foster parents when they come home, and will welcome any visitor with a waggy tail and a lick. She even looks a bit disappointed when people walk by her on the street and don’t say hello! Maura has a real lust for life which is rather infectious and a pleasure to be around. ~ In the Home ~ Maura is a good girl in the home and is well adjusted to the home life as she has been in foster care for a year now. She is friendly and welcoming to anyone who enters her home, be it human or canine. She is fully housetrained and though she greatly enjoys human company, she isn’t an overly clingy girl and is quite content to find her own space and spend time alone. Right now she has a greyhound foster brother who she is left with, but she may be happy to be left completely alone as an only dog too. The challenge with Maura is getting her to understand why a rule must be obeyed. Once she grasps the why, she is a very good and obedient dog. She has learned and responds to basic commands such as ‘no’, ‘out’ and ‘go lay down’, as well as coming to her name and to a whistle. She also understands boundaries and quickly learned that she was not allowed in the kitchen and not allowed to bark at the neighbours. She doesn’t beg people for food, though her eyes can be bigger than her belly and she will finish up any food in any dog bowl if given the chance. She loves her treats and these have been a great motivational tool for her. Maura would thrive in an active home with or without another dog. As she can be like a black tornado when she gets excited, she would be best going to a home with older, dog savvy kids who won’t be bowled over by her antics. ~ Other Animals ~ Maura gets on well with most dogs, though can be intimidated by aggressive or overly bouncy dogs, and will grumble at them. She has bonded well with the greyhound in her foster home, and learned a lot from him when she first came to the home. Once comfortable with another dog, Maura is very playful and loves to play chase with other dogs of all sizes. It is only if the dog shows aggression that she will mirror that and show aggression back. This is being worked in with her foster parents and she is learning to stop to a firm ‘no’. She is not cat friendly. ~ Out and About ~ Maura is a generally a good girl when out, and really does live for her walks. The longer the better for this girl! Her lead skills have hugely improved and she will walk to heel now, only pulling occasionally. She does still have her rebellious moments and will at times put the brakes on and refuse to move forward. This is not due to her being spooked by something, rather she is telling you that she wants to go a different way, or absolutely has to sniff a specific grass blade. Her foster parents have been working on this, and she can now be distracted and walked on quicker. It is another example of her testing the boundaries, and is really just a matter of showing her that your say is the way. Maura does respond to her name and will come to you, though as such an independent thinker she may never be fully reliable offlead. She should therefore only be let off in a completely secure area. ~ Where Can I Live? ~ Maura is a super loving, affectionate and cheeky little dog who enjoys a challenge and likes to use her brain. She may need a rather specific kind of home, one that knows an active mind is not necessarily a bad thing, and who will value a dog who can think for herself. She will need consistent boundaries and will need mental challenge in order to be truly happy. In return she has oodles of love to give, and will be a source of constant entertainment. Maura would do best in a home without young children or overly playful dogs. However, she is quite adaptable, and may be suitable as an only dog provided she gets enough stimulation throughout the day. Maura’s fosterer says she is one of the nicest dogs she has had the pleasure to meet, and dearly hopes Maura finds a family for her. With a bit of work on teaching her manners and limitations, this girl has the potential to be a fantastic family member – she needs only the right home to be that perfect hound. http://i94.photobuck...nds/Maurasd.jpg ~ Where Am I? ~ Maura is currently in foster care in Bacton, UK. She can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you will be required to travel to the foster home to meet and collect her. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Maura is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. 17. PEGGY and SCOOBY Peggy and Scooby are two 6 year old greyhounds who are brother and sister. Peggie is the white and fawn girl and Scooby is the black laddie. Though they look like a bit of an odd couple, they get on fantastically together and we don’t have the heart to split them up! Peggy and Scooby were originally known as Peg and Scholes, but found themselves with new names when they entered their foster home. The tragic fact is these 2 hounds have been waiting for their forever home since 2009, and despite their beautiful wagging tails and friendly faces, have been overlooked again and again for what is now years. To see these two hounds placed in a permanent loving home would make our day here at Kerry Greyhounds UK. Can you be that special someone? These guys are both ex-racers who worked hard for the first 5 years of their lives, and now really deserve to retire to their soft sofas. Both are well-rounded, friendly dogs who love to give cuddles and walk beautifully on the lead. They also enjoy playing with each other, and will keep each other occupied when left alone.

** UPDATE: JUNE 2011 ** Peggie and Scooby have now been in their foster home for approx. 4 weeks, and are becoming well settled. They are ready and waiting for their forever homes, with very few issues holding them back. We have gotten to know them much better now that they are in the close contact of a loving foster home, and it is a joy to see their characters blossom. ~ Personality ~ Peggie and Scooby are two very lovable hounds who are quite suited to each other. They are both very friendly and affectionate, and will not hesitate to shower you in kisses if your face is anywhere near their reach! Peggie is definitely the queen of the two, and Scooby is her loyal follower. They can be a bit bouncy and excitable, especially around walk time, but they are gradually calming down and settling. This can only improve with time and gentle patience. They are both quite playful and are experimenting with all the new toys they’ve been given – it really is their 7th Heaven! They also have the greyhound habit of pinching random household items and carrying them around – slippers and sofa cushions are a favourite with these two. They never chew the items they take, just move them around.

~ In the Home ~ These two adorable hounds have gotten used to the initially strange and mystifying household sights and sounds, and are content and relaxed in the home. Though both had accidents at the very start, they are both housetrained now and will happily wait to go outside to toilet. Peggie is a bit of a scavenger at the moment and will try to raid the kitchen counter if given the chance. This is being worked on by their fosterer and it shouldn’t be too long before this habit ceases. They are quiet and clean through the night, though they are still living on ‘racing kennel time’ and like to wake up for their morning walk at 6am! Their fosterer is also working on this and is slowly introducing them to the joys of sleeping in, especially at the weekend! Peggie and Scooby would be well suited to a fairly active home who would spend time each day taking them out and showing them the big wide outside world. Due to their mad moments of bounciness, they would be best going to a home without young children as they may bowl them over without even realising it. Peggie and Scooby could live with other large to medium sized dogs quite nicely, but can go as a pair to a home without other dogs too. This pair have been waiting incredibly long for their forever home and we hope they will find their new family in the very near future. They really do have oodles of love and loyalty to give, and are sure to keep their new owners well entertained with their antics. ~ Other Animals ~ Peggie and Scooby are sharing their foster home with 3 other dogs and have been good as gold with them all. Out on walks can be a slightly different story, however, and Scooby in particular can be a bit keen on the small dogs he meets along the way. This is a common initial problem with ex-racing greyhounds as many will have never seen a non-greyhound shaped dog before and so do not initially realise the small dogs are indeed dogs. Lots of positive socialising will teach Scooby that dogs can come in small sizes too. Once he realises they are indeed dogs, Scooby is very good and mannerly. Neither are cat friendly. ~ Where Am I? ~ Peggie and Scooby are currently in foster care in Milton Keynes, UK. They can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you will be required to travel to the foster home to meet and collect them. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Peggie and Scooby are neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. 18. HUMBUG Meet the adorable little munchkin that is Humbug. He is a whippet x lurcher pup who was found straying with no parents or family in sight. He is approx. 12 weeks old and has a pretty brindle coat with the cheekiest face you can imagine! Humbug has been in foster care for a few weeks now, and has put on lots of weight and condition. He now looks like a very healthy puppy, and not the thin, scraggly lost boy he was when he first came. He is growing fast now, but shouldn’t end up much bigger in height than a large whippet. ~ Personality ~ Humbug is a little sweetheart. He is an absolute delight to be around; his antics always keep a smile on your face. He is a complete mummy’s boy and adores getting hugs and cuddles, but also has a rough’n’tumble side and loves to play. He is fast becoming a well balanced, grounded little pup who loves everyone and everything. He is responsive to training and has already learned his name, though like all puppies his age, he still has a slightly short attention span! In typical young puppy style, Humbug adores his naps and will just flop down on the sofa for 40 winks – and no amount of shaking will wake him! ~ In the Home ~ Humbug has been in his foster home for about 3 weeks now, and is doing brilliantly. He sleeps soundly through the night, and his foster family leave him alone for periods during the day so that he won't develop separation anxiety. He is coping with this alone time quite well. As with all puppies, Humbug likes to chew, but his chosen 'toys' (slippers, chair leg, garden pebbles!! etc.) are quickly replaced with a rag dog toy which he loves. He adores his grub, and is being fed 3 or 4 meals a day. Sometimes he can get a bit grumpy if he doesn't want to do something, but he is learning that this is not acceptable behaviour. He has now mastered the art of house training, and will happily take himself outside to wee throughout the day. Please note that he may have a few mishaps when he first moves home, but this will stop once he becomes settled in his new home. ~ Other Animals ~ Humbug is being socialised with a variety of animals in his foster home, including dogs, cats, horses, hens, ducks, geese and even a pig! He gets on brilliantly with the two staffies he shares his home with, and these two older, well balanced dogs are teaching him the do’s and dont’s of dog socialising and play. Humbug likes nothing more than to curl up with his two staffy ‘brothers’ in the evening, and often shares their bed during the night. Humbug is also accepting of the family cats and is learning to respect their boundaries. ~ Out and About ~ Humbug is a joy to take out, and makes his foster parents proud. He enjoys being outside, exploring the vegetable patch, the long grass paddock, and hiding under the car with the resident cats! He entered his first dog show recently and was a little star with everyone and every dog there. He walks very well on a lead and collar even though he is still just learning what it’s for. Humbug would be well suited to a variety of homes. He can live with other animals quite nicely and really enjoys being around other dogs. As he is just a pup, he would benefit from an active family who would take him out and show him the world. He has oodles of potential and may have a hidden talent for agility waiting to blossom. Kerry Greyhound Connection strongly recommends that Humbug’s new owners take him to training and/or socialisation classes early on so that he can continue to develop his social skills. This boy has the potential to be that perfect canine citizen and only needs a continuation of the training his foster home has started. With consistent boundaries in place from day one, Humbug is guaranteed to be that perfect family dog. ~ Where Am I? ~ Humbug is currently being fostered in Ireland and will be transported via Kerry Greyhounds to the UK when a suitable home offer comes up. This will be organised and paid for by Kerry Greyhounds, and we ask only for a donation to help cover costs. Please note that adopters will need to travel to our nearest collection point to pick him up, and if you are in the UK and wish to meet before adopting him, he will be fostered in the Norfolk area. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Humbug is vaccinated, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. Due to his age, Humbug is not yet neutered, so potential adopters will need to agree to have this done once he is old enough (at approx. 6 months). Kerry Greyhound Connection may ask for a deposit on the neuter fee as a guarantee before adopting Humbug. If you are interested in adopting little Humbug, please email me (Tam) on for our adoption application form and information pack. Emails are usually replied to within 24 hrs. Thanks! ~~ KERRY GREYHOUND CONNECTION ~~ Kerry Greyhound Connection is a small voluntary organisation that has bases in Co. Kerry, Ireland and Norfolk, England. 19. TARA Meet the very beautiful Tara. She is a 2.5 year old greyhound girl who was brought in to us with her near identical sister, Tessa. In an ideal world we would love to find a home for these girls together, but we will home them separately if the right families come along. Tara is a very pretty girl with a blue coat and striking amber eyes. She is 26” to the shoulder with a slender build, and has the most amazing ears! ~ Personality ~ Tara is a new girl to our kennels and we are still assessing her. So far, though, she has been a real star of a girl and we can’t yet find fault in her. She is beautiful in both appearance and personality, and enjoys getting a good ear scratch in the mornings. ~ Other Animals ~ Tara is well behaved with the other greyhounds in the kennels and has not caused an ounce of trouble. She has also been very mannerly with the small dogs she has met so far, and will greet them politely before continuing on her way. This girl would do well in a home with another canine buddy, or most ideally with her sister Tessa. She is not cat friendly. ~ In the Home ~ Tara has not been in a home environment before, so new owners will need to be a bit patient during the first couple of weeks and allow her time to settle in and learn the home rules. It generally takes 10-14 days for new greyhounds to start to settle down in a home, and really all they need is a bit of time and patience. This girl is sure to love the home life, and will make such a striking addition to your home. ~ Out and About ~ Tara is well behaved on the lead and walks to heel. Like most greyhounds, she will not need a huge amount of exercise. She will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch her legs offlead in a secure area once or twice a week. This girl is guaranteed to be a real eye-catcher when out on walks! ~ The beautiful Tara is currently being kennelled with her sister Tessa in Ireland, and will be transported via Kerry Greyhounds to the UK or Europe when a suitable foster or permanent home offer comes up. This will be organised and paid for by Kerry Greyhounds, and we ask only for a donation to help cover costs. Please note that adopters will need to travel to our nearest collection point to pick her up, and if you are in the UK and wish to meet before adopting her, she will be fostered in the Norfolk area. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Tara is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. This girl would greatly benefit from being in a foster home, and Kerry Greyhound Connection is always in desperate need of new fosterers. It is such a rewarding experience, and costs are covered by the rescue. If you are interested in adopting or short-term fostering Tara, please email me (Tam) on for our adoption application form and information pack. 20. RONNIE Ronnie is a 3.5 year old ex-racing greyhound boy. He is a lovely slender boy with a black tuxedo coat that will be so sleek and shiny when he loses the last of his kennel coat. ~ Personality ~ Dear Ronnie is such a sweet boy but is so very nervous. He has spent all his life in racing kennels so many of the common, every day sights and sounds that we take for granted are very frightening for him. It is obvious that he really wants to join in with the attention and fuss but is just too scared right now. Interacting closely with people is a new concept for this boy and he needs a bit of time to adjust to this new life. It is very sad to see such a lovely dog so scared and confused. ~ Other Animals ~ Ronnie is, however, very good and reliable with other dogs of all shapes and sizes. Going to a home with at least one other dog is a must for this boy as it will help him so much. He is quite comfortable with other dogs and given a calm, quiet environment we don’t think it will take too long for him to start to trust people. Ronnie has not been tested with cats but may be cat friendly – this test will be carried out in the near future. ~ In the Home ~ Sweet Ronnie has just moved out of kennels and into a foster home. The close contact and loving TLC of a foster home is exactly what this boy needs to start to flourish. He is finding the transition quite scary but is starting relax now. We will update with his progress once he settles a bit more and starts to come out of himself. This super sweet boy is going to be a fantastic, rewarding addition to the right family. Ronnie would do best in a quieter home with at least one other dog and no young children who might potentially frighten him. ~ Out and About ~ Like most greyhounds, Ronnie is not a high energy dog and does not need a huge amount of exercise. He will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch his legs offlead in a safe area once or twice a week. ~ Where Am I? ~ Ronnie is currently in foster care in Sudbury, UK. He can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you will be required to travel to the foster home to meet and collect him. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Ronnie is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. If you are interested in adopting Ronnie, please email me (Tam) on for our adoption application form and information pack. Emails are usually replied to within 24 hrs. 21. TINY Tiny is a 3 year old greyhound girl who was brought to us with her brother Toto to find their forever homes. Toto has since found his new family, but dear Tiny is still waiting patiently for hers. Tiny has never raced and has been handled nicely in the past. She is a beautiful brindle girl with bright eyes and a silky soft coat. Tiny is a super little girl and we are amazed that she has been waiting so long (nearly a year) to find her perfect family. After the hard decision to split her and her brother up, we hope that Tiny will find her new family very soon. Tiny with her bigger brother, Toto (now adopted). ~ Personality ~ Dear Tiny really is a joy to be around. She is friendly, confident and affectionate and absolutely loves being around people and other dogs. She is a happy, playful girl who enjoys romping around in the garden but is just as content to snooze the evenings away on the sofa while you watch the TV. Tiny loves her ear scratches and can be so very sweet natured. She really is a super little lady and whoever adopts her is sure to have a loyal friend for life. ~ Other Animals ~ Tiny is very good with other dogs and has had lots of practice in meeting them when out on walks. She shares her foster home with other dogs and, up until recently, with her brother Toto whom she got on very well with. She loves playing chase in the garden and greatly enjoys her toys. Tiny would do well in a home with other similarly minded dogs who would play her game. ~ In the Home ~ Tiny has been living in a foster home for over 6 months now, and is very well settled. She is just perfect in the home, it is hard to fault her. She is housetrained, not destructive and ok to be left with other dogs for company. She sleeps soundly and quietly through the night and is content with the routine of walk in the morning and snooze in the evening. She has no qualms sharing her space or toys with the other dogs in her foster home, and is in general an all-round star. This girl would be well suited to a range of home types. She would be a good girl for a first time hound owner as she is so centered and dependable. She would also be well suited to an active home with kids to play with her and even teach her some tricks. Tiny is a super little lass who is very flexible and accommodating. ~ Out and About ~ Tiny is just brilliant when out on her walks, she is a model hound. She greets everyone with a waggie tail and a sniff n’lick, and is very polite. She is used to seeing other dogs out on her walks and is very dog savvy. She walks neatly on the lead and rarely pulls. She is an active, inquisitive girl who really loves being out, and due to her fab personality she is no trouble at all. Tiny has taken part in Kerry Greyhound Connection group walks and meet-ups, and has been just super with the crowds of people and dogs. This girl really is no bother, and is a joy to have around. Beautiful Tiny has been waiting an extremely long time for her forever home, and sadly could not find it with her brother Toto. It is through no fault at all of her own, and we dearly hope that she can look forward to finding her forever family in the very near future. This girl is very near to perfect and has oodles of love to give. ~ Where Am I? ~ Tiny is currently in foster care in Norfolk, UK. She can be homed anywhere in the UK, but please note that you will be required to travel to the foster home to meet and collect her. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Tiny is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. 22. BETTY Beautiful Betty is a female lurcher pup approximately 5 months old. She was rescued with her brother Barney off the streets in Ireland and is now looking for a home to call hers. She is currently in the care of the SPCA in Ireland, and Kerry Greyhound Connection is helping to find her a home. Betty is a beautiful girl with a brindle coat and has the most intelligent face. ~ Personality ~ Betty is a smashing girlie with so much potential. She adores people but has a special spot for kids – she is extremely gentle and well behaved with the kids in her foster home. She is more confident than her brother and absolutely loves being out, greeting everybody. Betty is very curious about the world around her and quite adventurous. She is a typical puppy and is full of that lust for life and exuberance that only puppies possess. It’s going to be such a joy to show this happy-go-lucky girl the world around her. ~ Other Animals ~ Betty is brilliant with all the other animals she has met so far. She is dog and cat friendly, and even horse friendly! Betty loves racing around playing lurcher tag with the other dogs in her foster home. She is good with other dogs and, though play can get a bit boisterous at times, she does listen if the other dog tells her to stop. She is a very well behaved lady. Betty is sociable with the other cats in her foster home; though she might be spurred on to chase a very skittish kitty. This could be worked on with training if needed, and Betty responds well to tasty treats. We also recommend all puppies attend a dog training or socialising class as it’s a great opportunity for them to romp and play with other dogs, as well as learn some new commands. ~ In the Home ~ Betty and her brother Barney are currently being fostered in an outdoor kennel situation, so have not yet been in a home. New owners will need to be prepared to show them around the house and set some rules in place from day one. They may have a few accidents at the very start, but it’s worth noting that many housetrained dogs will have mistakes at the start too! It shouldn’t take too long to get this girlie in to a nice routine as she is so eager to please. ~ Out and About ~ Though still just a puppy, Betty walks fabulously on the lead and rarely pulls. In fact she is so mannered that a child could, and does, walk her! This girl is very responsive to training and might be a real star in the making for something like agility. Betty simply loves getting out and seeing the world. Because she is so well mannered, she is a joy to bring anywhere too. She often gets to go offlead on her fosterer’s land and it’s fun to see her running and chasing with the other dogs, then splashing about in the stream to cool down. Though still just a puppy with all that unlimited puppy energy, once Betty matures a bit she will be your typical lazy lurcher, content with a medium amount of exercise. ~ Where Am I? ~ Betty is currently in the care of the SPCA in Ireland and will be transported via Kerry Greyhounds to the UK when a suitable home offer comes up. This will be organised and paid for by both Kerry Greyhounds and the Irish SPCA, and we ask for a donation to help cover costs. Please note that adopters will need to travel to our nearest collection point to pick her up, and if you wish to meet before adopting her, she may be fostered in the Norfolk area if a space is available. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Betty is not yet neutered so new owners will need to agree to have this done when she is old enough (after 6mths). Kerry Greyhound Connection will check up on this, and may request a down-payment on the neutering bill as an insurance that it will be done. Betty is vaccinated, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. 23. BARNEY Meet the very beautiful Barney. He is a lurcher puppy who is approximately 5 months old. He was found as a malnourished stray in Ireland with his sister Betty and is now looking to make up for his poor start to life. Barney is currently being looked after by the SPCA in Ireland, and Kerry Greyhound Connection is helping to find him his new home. He is a very impressive lad with a dark brindle coat and it’s looking like he’s going to be a big boy! ~ Personality ~ Barney is such a lush big lad, and has come in in leaps and bounds since coming into rescue care. Barney is super social but also quite chilled in character with big ploddy paws. He is a big soft cuddlebum who loves attention and will do anything for a bit of fuss. Barney is not as outgoing as his sister Betty and is fine with allowing things to happen around him. He is not nervous or timid; he is simply very laid back. He is fabulous with people and animals and is very well mannered with the kids (aged 7 and 10) that he shares his foster home with. He listens to them very well and is so gentle around them. ~ Other Animals ~ Barney is excellent with other dogs, cats and even horses. It’s a big wide world out there for this lovely lad! He loves to play chase with other dogs, though sometimes doesn’t know his own size so may accidently flatten a small yorkie type dog! He is all paws and elbows at the moment and doesn’t yet have much coordination. He does respect other dogs, though, and accepts a telling off quite nicely. Barney would benefit from attending puppy training classes so that he can meet lots of other dogs and learn a few more commands. ~ In the Home ~ Like all puppies, Barney is still young and has a lot to learn. He is currently being fostered in an outdoor kennel with his sister, so has not yet experienced a home. New owners will need to be patient with him and teach him right from wrong from the very beginning. It may take a few days to get his housetraining sorted, but this boy is very eager to please and likes routine, so we don’t think it should take too long before he grasps the idea. With the right quota of training and love, Barney has the potential to blossom into a fabulously social, well balanced young hound who will make his owners so very proud. ~ Out and About ~ Barney is a dream to walk on the lead, so much so that despite his size, even the children in his foster home can happily walk him. His fosterers let him offlead on their land where there are no major roads nearby, and he is very content to stay with the family and romp with them. He doesn’t seem to be overly independent. He has some recall though this could always be sharpened up. Though quite full of energy right now, Barney is sure to grow into a big lounging lurcher boy who will be content with a medium amount of exercise. ~ Where Am I? ~ Barney boy is currently in the care of the SPCA in Ireland and will be transported via Kerry Greyhounds to the UK when a suitable home offer comes up. This will be organised and paid for by both Kerry Greyhounds and the Irish SPCA, and we ask for a donation to help cover costs. 24. SAMSON Meet the very stunning Samson. This boy is a 3 year old ex-racing greyhound boy. Samson has a beautiful blue tuxedo coat with big striking amber eyes. He is in lush condition with a satin soft coat that just begs to be stroked. ~ Personality ~ Samson is a lovely lively chap and is very friendly. He enjoys interacting with people and is always ready for another cuddle. This boy has lots of potential and is a real outgoing boy, greatly enjoying being out and about, seeing the world. ~ Other Animals ~ Samson is good with the other greyhounds in our kennels and absolutely loves getting to stretch his legs offlead with his other houndy mates. He has not been tested yet with smaller dogs or cats, but these can be carried out prior to adoption if required. Often ex-racing greyhounds need a bit of socialisation with smaller dog breeds as they would never have seen them before and at the start may not realise they are dogs! ~ Out and About ~ Like most greyhounds, Samson will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch his legs offlead in a safe area once or twice a week. He is a bit strong on the lead right now, but we are sure this will settle down once he is getting more regular daily exercise and play time. 25. DESTINY Destiny is a 2 year old ex-racing greyhound girl. She is a dainty girl with a very long, elegantly shaped nose that gives her a very regal appearance. Once her coat improves and gets some shine to it, she’s going to be just beautiful. ~ Personality ~ Destiny is a friendly little girl with a waggy tail for everyone who comes and visits her. She enjoys people and is going to relish the home life so much. Destiny has just come to us so we are still assessing her. She will soon be placed in a foster home which will allow us to get a much better idea of her wonderful little personality. ~ Other Animals ~ Destiny has so far been well behaved with all the other dogs she has met, regardless of size or gender. She is a playful little girl and we’re sure there’s a cheeky streak hidden in there somewhere! Destiny would do well in a home with another similarly aged dog to keep her company and drain any excess energy. She has not been tested with cats yet but we will be doing this shortly. ~ In the Home ~ Little Destiny has just moved in to a foster home now, and we will be updating with her progress once she has a bit of time to adjust to the changes – this is her first time in a home. New owners will need to be a bit patient during the first couple of weeks and allow her time to settle into the home.
