  2. NOODLES **UPDATED: 19th OCTOBER 2013** Location: Kennels in Norfolk, UK. Noodles would love a foster home while he waits for his forever family, and we are in desperate need of foster homes at present. Please do contact us if you think you can help. Key Points: Fab young dog, social, friendly, very affectionate, cuddly, playful, goofy, great family member, dog savvy, not yet in a home, walks to heel. Noodles! Noodles is a lovely fawn lurcher boy who possibly has some labrador in his makeup. He was taken from the pound and is now looking for a forever home. He is 26” to the shoulder and is gradually putting on weight and improving from the very thin wee thing he was upon arrival a month ago. Give him a couple more months and he’ll be in peak condition again. Noodles recently attended our annual walk in Norfolk, and he had a ball of a time! He has also improving at a lovely steady pace putting on weight and getting a shine back in his eyes. ~ Personality ~ Generally: Fantastic dog, playful, goofy, puppyish, trusting of people, loves cuddles, affectionate, social. Noodles certainly hasn’t let his rough start affect his outlook on life. He loves everyone and everything all the time! He adores people and loves a cuddle. He’s happy, bubbly and very easy to keep contented – he just wants your company. He would be a lovely dog for older kids (8+yrs) or teenagers as he is playful and fun loving. Noodles is also a great big foodie so training is a doddle, he is super attentive and eager to please when he sees the treat bag come out! We can't wait to see this dog in a warm home as he has SO much love and squishy companionship to give, he is wasted in kennels. ~ In the Home ~ Generally: Not yet in a home. Noodles has not yet been in a home environment, so new owners will need to be a bit understanding at the start and give him time to learn the house rules. All he needs is a bit of understanding for the first couple of weeks until he finds his feet in the completely new setup. Noodles loves other dogs and would certainly benefit from having another dog present in his new home so he has someone to copy and learn from, but this is not an absolute requirement. ~ Other Animals ~ Generally: Loves other dogs, benefits from their company, playful, young, goofy. Noodles is fantastic with other dogs and never puts a paw wrong. He is not expected to be cat friendly, but is very dog savvy and would be a great companion for another dog. He likes to play and goof around and is still just a puppy at heart really. He loves making new canine friends. ~ Out and About ~ Generally: Walks very well, loves getting out, very friendly and social, suitable for offlead after recall work. Noodles is a moderately active boy who will need someone to exercise his body and mind. He is smart and athletic and may excel at agility or flyball. He would also love to learn tricks for his new family and is very eager to work for treats and praise. Noodles will be suitable to be let offlead in safe areas away from public roads and livestock once he has had work done with recall. Noodles is quite bouncy when he sees you coming with the lead, but doesn’t pull on the lead when the walk has started. He just loves his walks so much, he gets excited. ~ Where Am I? ~ Noodles is currently in kennels in Norfolk. He can be homed anywhere in the UK provided we have a homechecker available, but please note that you may be required to travel to our rescue to meet and collect him. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Noodles is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. This dear boy would benefit so very much from a chance to live in a foster home and Kerry Greyhounds UK is always eager for new foster volunteers. It is an extremely rewarding experience and costs are covered by us. Size? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Medium-large Good with children? - - - - - - - - Yes with kids older than 8 years. Good with dogs? - - - - - - - - - - Yes Good with cats? - - - - - - - - - - -No Great dog because: - - - - - - - - Cuddly, friendly, sweet, gentle, loves people and dogs alike, very easy. Needs work on: - - - - - - - - - - -Recall & not pinching food. Interested in finding out more about this dear boy? Please read on… The delightful Dexter is a 2 year old greyhound boy who is looking for a loving home after being chucked out of the racing world for not being fast enough. He is a very handsome black boy with a white heart on his chest. Dexter is very slender and elegant at 27” to the shoulder. He really is an elegant, handsome boy and this is becoming more and more apparent as he loses his kennel coat. ~ Personality ~ Generally: Adorable, loving, playful, shy initially but soon gets over it, very affectionate and cuddly. Dexter is a real sweetheart and is loved by everyone. He is a bit shy at first, but give him just a few minutes to assess things and he quickly becomes the friendly cuddly boy we know. He loooooves people and adores every bit of interaction he gets. He is beautifully engaging and interactive, loves hugs and ear rubs, and very much wants to be a good boy. Dexter is also a great big foodie so training is a fun time for everyone involved. ~ In the Home ~ Generally: Housetrained, home savvy, learning house rules, good with foster dogs, not destructive, ok to be left, likes socks! Dexter has just moved into a foster home, and so is in the settling period. He is so far going really well, and is now learning the basic house rules as all new dogs do. He has been housetrained from the very start, ok to be left with canine company, not destructive, and just needs to learn not to counter surf to be 100% perfect in the home. He doesn’t like laminate flooring, but it is not a massive issue and he will get used to them in due course. Dexter is very mannerly with people and is trying hard to learn the do’s and dont’s. He gets really excited when new visitors come to the house, but this burst is short lived and after initial hello greetings, he takes himself away and settles down to snooze. He is really friendly and happy to say hi to anyone. Dexter is also now starting to play and its great to see him pick up a toy and experiment with it. He likes to toss them in the air, and also takes notions to drag his bed around like a comfort blanket! He’s also taken a strange liking to socks! Dexter is sharing his foster home with 2 other houndies and loves them to pieces. He is relying on them in these early days to show him what to do in the new home environment, and he is learning very quickly. Dexter has shown that he likes to have a quiet bed in a corner somewhere, out of the middle of the home bustle. He will give a small grumble if another dog tries to share his space, though we suspect this is due to the initial ‘I can't believe how lucky I am’ phase that many greyhounds go through, and that he will get better at sharing as he settles and realises hes not going back to kennels. ~ Other Animals ~ Generally: Great with dogs, social and playful. Dexter is super with other dogs of all sizes and loves making new canine buds. He is social, savvy and well balanced. He likes to play and gallump around, and would be a fabulous, undemanding companion for another dog. He is not cat friendly. ~ Out and About ~ Generally: Walks well & never pulls, dog savvy, friendly and social, bit shy of loud traffic, great to take anywhere. Dexter is a low maintenance boy and doesn’t need as much exercise as you might expect. He is currently getting 1 walk a day during the week with field romping at the weekends and is content with this. He doesn’t pull on the lead and is a joy to take anywhere, being so social, balanced and mannerly. Dexter needs a bit of work on recall before he can be safely be let offlead, but this will come with a bit of training and repetition. He can never be let offlead in areas near public roads or livestock, but should be fine offlead in places like the beach with proper recall training beforehand. He travels beautifully in the car, and though is a little bit nervous of large vehicles when out walking, we think he will get better himself with repeated walks. ~ Greyhounds as Pets ~ In general greyhounds are very calm, mannerly dogs that are used to being handled. They can fit into a wide range of different lifestyles and usually adjust to the home life very quickly. Their soft, easy going nature often makes them ideal to live in a family with children, while their love of lazing around and low exercise requirements can make them perfect for the elderly. ~ Where Am I? ~ Dexter is currently in a foster home in Norfolk. He can be homed anywhere in the UK provided we have a homechecker available, but please note that you may be required to travel to meet and collect him. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Dexter is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. 8. HAMLET **UPDATED: 24th NOVEMBER 2013** Location: Kennels in Norfolk, UK. Hamlet would love a dog-free foster home while he waits for his forever family. Key Points: A bit of a project, recovering from bad start & currently very stressed in kennels, , very loving and friendly with people, affectionate, boisterous, muzzled offlead, needs careful introduction to other dogs, ok on lead, not yet in a home, clean in kennel, eager to please, active and benefits from work/training. Dear Hamlet is a little 1-2 year old black lurcher who was fortunate enough to find himself straying in the vicinity of one of our volunteers, who took him in. He was found in a thin, poor condition, riddled with fleas and mange and has plenty of scars so has likely been worked. This boy dearly needs a calm home where he can learn to relax and enjoy life. He is finding our kennels extremely stressful, and desperately needs out so that he can recover himself. ~ Personality ~ Generally: Damaged boy needing loving home to regain himself, very loving, bouncy, playful, has sweet moments, loves people, eager to please, foodie, active. Hamlet has healing scars both physically and mentally, and so what he needs most now is a patient, loving owner who will calmly show him that life is not a big chore and that he can relax and safely ‘smell the roses’, so to speak. He has been with us for 2 months now, and in this short time he has already come out of his shell a lot. He was initially very reserved and unsure of affection, but now he has no qualms about asking for it and greeting people with big happy faces and waggy tails. This boy just needs a bit of direction in his life, he’s crying out for it, and once he knows what his lot is, he’ll settle. Hamlet has a beautiful sweet side and has sooooooo much love to give. Once he knows you, you get a huge happy greeting of full body wags, guaranteed to put a smile on your face! Sometimes it bubbles over in the form of over-excited bouncing but please don’t see this as a negative, he just needs to channel that love. Hamlet has just started some clicker training and this alongside healthy exercise is definitely the way forward with him. Teaching him to place the butt on the ground will be a key factor in stopping the jumping, and Hamlet is eager to please and food driven. ~ In the Home ~ Generally: Not yet in a home, not suitable to live with small dogs. Hamlet has not yet been in a home environment, so new owners will need to be a bit understanding at the start and give him a bit of time to learn the house rules. Due to his current habit of jumping and bouncing when happy, Hamlet wouldn’t be suitable to live with young children as he may knock them over. Hamlet is just now learning about toys and hasn’t mastered the art yet, but does enjoy chasing a ball. ~ Other Animals ~ Generally: Needs careful canine introductions. Well poor Hamlet, he has had such a tough start and is finding kennel life very stressful. Before coming to our rescue, Hamlet was being kennelled in Ireland, where he got on perfectly fine with medium-large sized dogs. He showed a bit of excitement at very small dogs, but was quite dog savvy with other dogs his size and larger, ran offlead with them and played with his kennel mate daily. Now however, since coming to our kennels, which is a busier and louder environment, Hamlet has become aggressive with other dogs. We know this is not who Hamlet truly is, he is simply extremely stressed in this type of kennel situation and is venting at other dogs. What Hamlet needs now above all else is a calm, quiet foster home where he can de-stress and remember how to be himself. We are appealing now for a dog-free foster home for Hamlet so that he can be slowly introduced to dogs again once he is free of the stressful kennel environment. Please please contact us if you think you can help this boy, he is visibly crying out for help. ~ Out and About ~ Generally: Walks well after excitement wears off, very social with people, offlead with muzzle, active. Hamlet is an active lad who will hugely benefit from healthy exercise and we don’t think he has an upper limit, its simply whatever you can give him. He has been getting 45min daily lead walks with 60min offlead sessions a few times a week and this is currently not enough for him. Right now Hamlet has a lot of internal stress and anxiety that is showing itself as hyperactivity. This is not really who Hamlet is. This is fully expected to calm down once he internally calms down, and that will start to happen naturally once he’s settled in a home. His potential owners just need to understand this process and encourage it to happen. Hamlet pulls a bit on the lead initially, but soon relaxes and walks calmly beside you. He can get carsick on very twisty roads, though this is getting better with time. ~ Where Can I Live? ~ As mentioned, we feel Hamlet is currently holding a lot of anxiety tight within him, and this is coming out as negative energy and hyperactivity when engaging people and other dogs. What Hamlet needs most of all is to learn to relax, and so he desperately needs a patient and understanding owner who will facilitate this. He might benefit hugely from some TTouch sessions, as well as clicker training, agility, positive socialisation sessions and an area in the house where he can ‘downtime’, e.g. a crate. This boy is a project and a work in progress, and so will require an owner who wants to give their time and love to watch this boy bloom. He is not currently suitable to live with small children or dogs, but we feel this will change if he gets a chance at a calm foster home where he can recover. With the right home and setting, Hamlet can most definitely be the chillaxed lurcher boy we all know is in there. ~ Where Am I? ~ Hamlet is currently in kennels in Norfolk. He can be homed anywhere in the UK provided we have a homechecker available, but please note that you may be required to travel to our rescue to meet and collect him. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Hamlet is vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. He will be neutered before going to his new home. This dear boy would benefit so very much from a chance to live in a foster home and Kerry Greyhounds UK is always eager for new foster volunteers. It is an extremely rewarding experience and costs are covered by us. 10. BEN **UPDATED: SEPTEMBER 2013** Location: Foster home in Suffolk, UK. Key Points: Very social, great with everyone, dog savvy, housetrained, does countersurf, walks with gentle leader, fantastic companion for another dog, very trainable and biddable, good in car, shoe collector, best in active home. Gentle Ben is a 17mth old saluki x greyhound boy who was found to be surplus to requirement so came to us to find a loving family. Ben is a fab young lurcher with a black and tan coat and a very striking face. He has lost his kennel coat and is a very sleek, beautifully shiny boy. Ben suffered a broken front leg before coming to us after being kicked by a horse. This has been treated with an external fixation and after 10 weeks in foster care, he has now been signed off by the vet as a healthy young boy again. All Ben needs now is a gradual increase in exercise to rebuild the muscle around the injury. ~ Personality ~ Generally: Lovely, gentle, goofy, cheeky, cuddly, learning to learn, engaging, looks for direction, very social. Ben is a young, engaging hound and is bright as a button. He alternates between active & attentive and rather sedate, the perfect combination! He is still a big pup at heart and is very happy-go-lucky with a lovely soft personality. He just wants to give love and kisses. He enjoys some play time and a goof about and his antics are such fun to watch. At the same time this boy is eager to please all the time and is very attentive, he just needs to be given direction. He is very mannerly and friendly when greeting visitors, and gives his love in hand kisses rather than jumping up. Ben can sometimes be a little reserved with men he doesn’t know, but will rapidly get over this once he sees you as a friend. Ben has a huge heart and is a very kind, dependable dog who was born to be part of a family. ~ In the Home ~ Generally: Very good in home, housetrained, will steal food If given the chance, ok to be left, collects shoes for a hobby!. Ben has been in his foster home for 10 weeks while his fracture healed. He is now well used to living in a home and became very settled very quickly. Ben is housetrained and ok to be left with canine company. He likes to pinch random household items such as shoes and pile them up as his own personal collection. Ben never chews these items, he’s just a bit of a hoarder! Ben will also steal any food left lying around and would benefit from being taught to ‘leave it’. Ben really is 100% home ready now and each day spent in his foster home is a day wasted with his future forever family. His foster parents love him and his goofy antics, he has a habit of repeatedly stretching out and sliding off the sofa! Living up to his saluki half, Ben is a very chatty boy and makes a whole range of sounds. These must not be mistaken for growling as they are nothing of the sort, Ben just likes to talk and makes a range of little groans and moans and even the odd yodel! ~ Other Animals ~ Generally: Loves other dogs, playful and dog savvy, best homed with canine company. Ben shares his foster home with 4 other greyhounds and he loves them to pieces. All he wants to do is romp around and give kisses. He is very good and sociable with other dogs and loves loves loves to play. He can at times be a bit rough for very small toy breeds simply due to his size and style of play. He is a moderately active dog but would love a job and purpose to his life. ~ Out and About ~ Generally: Walks ok with gentle leader, very social with people & dogs, keen on small furries, good traveller, needs recall work. Ben is a young active pooch who does love to snooze on the sofa in the evenings but also does need a decent amount of daily exercise to be content. This must be built up gradually over time so the muscles in his previously injured leg can catch up, and Ben is currently on a couple of hours lead walking a day with a bit of garden playtime. He would love perhaps less lead walking and more offlead racing to truly burn him out, which can be done with time and recall work. Please note that Ben can not be let offlead near public roads or livestock, but will be suitable to be let offlead in safe areas after several weeks of recall work and bonding. Ben adores his walks, though is currently strong on the lead. He is being walked now on a gentle leader which hugely helps the pulling, but really Ben just needs some work and training in this area that has not been done much as yet because of the requirement to rest his broken leg. Now the training can begin in earnest! Ben just needs to realise how best to walk on the lead, and everyone will be happier when he no longer needs the gentle leader. Ben loves the car and is very sociable with everyone he meets. ~ Where Can I Live? ~ As mentioned, Ben is a young, energetic young dog with an active mind and as such he would be happiest in an active home who will take him on long walks and perhaps weekend hikes or afternoons at the beach. He absolutely thrives on canine company and really does need to share his home with another dog, or three! Ben should slot easily into an existing pack, but would also be a fab playmate for a similarly active young pooch. Ben is great with kids but may knock younger children over when playing, he can live with kids older than 8 years. Ben is one of the friendliest dogs you could ever hope to meet. A truly stunning boy who will bring a huge amount of joy to his new owners and he is guaranteed to make you smile and laugh on a daily basis. A real clown of a dog, and we hope he doesn’t have long to wait. ~ Where Am I? ~ Ben is currently in foster care in Suffolk. He can be homed anywhere in the UK provided we have a homechecker available, but please note that you may be required to travel to meet and collect him. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Ben is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. 11. Kerry Greyhounds UK always take in black greyhounds and lurchers, but don’t always find them homes easily. It’s a sad fact of rescue that black dogs of any breed are often overlooked simply because of their black coats. But black dogs really are just like any other dog. And what’s more, a black greyhound's coat, when in tip top condition, is a truly beautiful thing. They positively glisten in the sun. They also go with every colour of collar or coat, and their shed hairs don’t show up as much on your clothing. They really are win-win-win! Please consider helping a black Kerry Greyhound (or lurcher!) by fostering or adopting from us. All our current available hounds are on this forum. **UPDATED: DECEMBER 2013** ~~ KERRY GREYHOUNDS UK ~~ Kerry Greyhounds UK is a voluntary organisation based in Norfolk, England. 12. SCARLETT **UPDATED: AUGUST 2013** Location: Foster home in Norfolk, UK. Key Points: Friendly, sensitive, insecure at times, loving with her people, bit wary of children, grand with all other dogs – can take or leave them, adores walks, doesn’t pull, fabulous in the car, housetrained, home savvy. The beautiful Scarlett is a 7 year old greyhound girl who could really do with some good fortune in her life. She spent the first many years of her life kennelled in a back garden before coming to us and getting homed 2 years ago. Now unfortunately Scarlett has come back to us to find a new home after becoming grumbly over her space when sleeping in her bed. This dear lady just needs a break and someone who understands her insecurities. When Scarlett first arrived to us she had significant hair loss on the thighs with scabs from pressure sores from lying on bare concrete flooring. Her bald patches have since been covered over with silky soft fur and she is now in fabulous condition. Her healthy black coat gleams in the sun. Scarlett is a petite wee girl at just 25” to the shoulder. ~ Personality ~ Generally: Sensitive, loving, clever girl always thinking, independent, forms a gradual bond. Scarlett has left her previous home and is now in foster with us. She is showing herself to be a sensitive wee girl who is very attune to people. She is a ‘quiet thinker’ and assesses situations before partaking, but that doesn’t make her unaffectionate by any means. She is friendly and mannerly with people, just needs a few moments to take in the situation to know how to react. If approached too quickly or forcefully, she can become insecure and then defensive. This lady is very aware of people’s emotions, and needs a human who understands her insecurities and doesn’t rush or pressure her into situations where she may be uncomfortable. This includes children, who can make Scarlett uncomfortable because, again, they can unknowingly push her into situations where she isn’t yet comfortable. When the trust develops, Scarlett is a wonderful little lady who gives her love very sweetly. Scarlett also has an independent streak and doesn’t see the point in puppyish things like chasing a ball. She is very content to flake out in the sun and let the world go by. ~ In the Home ~ Generally: Housetrained, home savvy, well behaved and mannerly, loves her food, sharing with another dog. Scarlett is very used to living in a home and has no problem at all with the basics. She is housetrained and ok to be left alone for short periods of time. She is currently sharing her home with another houndy friend and they are indeed now friends after some initial grumbling on Scarlett’s part. Again these grumbles were stemming from insecurity, and once Scarlett felt safe in her new foster home, knowing her position in things, she settled down and now both dogs do everything together. ~ Other Animals ~ Generally: Can take or leave other dogs, very mannerly with them. Scarlett is grand with other dogs but often doesn’t appear to be overly excited about them. She can take or leave them. On walks, Scarlett accepts other dogs just fine and will give the usual greeting sniffs but happily ignore them from then on. She is fine with all dogs large and small. ~ Out and About ~ Generally: Walks to heel, rarely pulls, loves the car. Scarlett really loves her walks and adores the car, once she learned how to jump into it that is! She walks like a dream on the lead and will happily potter everywhere her human does. Scarlett will need a lot of bonding and recall work before she can be let offlead safety, and should never be let offlead near public roads or livestock. Her foster mum is currently working on this with Scarlett and it is progressing along as their bond grows. ~ Where Can I Live? ~ As mentioned, Scarlett is a very sensitive girlie who can easily become insecure in herself. As such she really needs an understanding, experienced home who won't push her too much but keep her improving all the same. Perhaps there's someone out there who would like a little project in their pooch, as Scarlett has fabulous potential to get over her issue with the right kind of gentle guidance and bonding work. Currently Scarlett is not suitable to live with young children as they may not read the signs she gives when she’s uncomfortable, thus making her react. She would be fine in a quieter home with teenagers who, again, know not to push her too far. She can take or leave other dogs and so can live with another quiet pooch or on her own. ~ Where Am I? ~ Scarlett is currently in foster care in Norfolk, UK. She can be homed anywhere in the UK provided we have a homechecker available, but please note that you may be required to travel to the foster home to meet and collect her. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Scarlett is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. If you are interested in adopting Scarlett, you can contact me (Tam) via email: [email protected], or speak directly to Bronwen by phoning: 075 000 62648. Emails are usually replied to within 24 hrs. 13. OVERLOOKED HOUNDS The majority of the hounds that come in to Kerry Greyhounds UK get assessed, rehabilitated and rehomed within 3 months. Sadly some aren't as lucky and for various reasons are overlooked again and again, resulting in them staying in our rescue for many months or even over a year. The purpose of this post is to shine a spotlight on these 'long stayers' in the hope someone will fall in love and decide they can take them on, or squeeze them into their existing pack. Some of these Long-Stay hounds have specific behavioural issues that require an experienced owner and so result in their being overlooked time and again, but some do not and are skipped simply because they have a black coat, or are of a certain cross. All our current available hounds are on this forum. ~ CURRENT OVERLOOKED HOUNDS ~ **UPDATED: DECEMBER 2013** If you are interested in knowing more about any of these hounds, please visit our Website: http://s300889640.websitehome.co.uk/uk/adoption.html to find out more information on our homing process and fill in our adoption application form. Filling in the adoption application form is the first step in our homing process, so having this done before contacting us does speed things up a bit. 15. ROMEO **UPDATED: 24th NOVEMBER 2013** Location: Foster home in Hertfordshire, UK. Key Points: Extremely gentle, mannerly, undemanding. Loyal and very loving. Sweet. Good with kids 8+ and all other dogs. Very laid back and relaxed. Balanced. The wonderful Romeo is a 4 year old ex-racing greyhound boy who got a very lucky escape from the needle after a few years on the flapping track. He is now seeking a loving home to call his. Romeo has been with us for 3 months now and his dull, dead kennel coat is disappearing to reveal a super soft, shiny black coat. Romeo is around average height for a boy at 27” to the shoulder. He has the silliest and floppiest ears we’ve seen in a while, they love to flop in opposite directions and add a bit of quirk to his charming elegance. ~ Personality ~ Generally: Very gentle, sociable, loving, cuddle-monster, undemanding, inquisitive, content, food orientated, balanced, quiet. Well, what can we say about Mr Romeo!? He is a wonderful, gentle boy who just wants to be good and be loved. He is incredibly laid back, which shouldn’t be mistaken for disinterest upon initial meetings – Romeo is super loving and cuddly, he’s just very relaxed about when and where he gets his daily love ration. He is nicely food motivated and this can be the core reward for any training needed, such as recall. Romeo is very much your typical greyhound – easy, calm, quiet and content. He loves his cuddles, loves his food, loves his walks and well, just loves life. His favourite way of saying ‘hello’ is to rub his face all over you! He doesn’t seem to have understood yet that he can take food from people’s hands, but he happily works and trains for praise. He is so balanced and gentle, it’s a true pleasure to meet him. Romeo is a great pick-me-up after a stressful day at work – he is so calm and centered in himself, he is guaranteed to relax you better than a bubble bath! ~ In the Home ~ Generally: House savvy, housetrained, calm, quiet, well behaved, bit of a food hog, starting to play. Darling Romeo has been in his foster home for exactly 2 months now, and is doing so well. He loves the home life, and we’re certain he hasn’t looked back once. He has bonded very well with his foster mum and follows her everywhere. He is also still inquisitive about the daily house chores and watches with interest as his foster mum potters around. He loves human company and is obviously enjoying being able to be around people for long periods each day now. After a few initial slip-ups, he is now fully housetrained. He is ok to be left with canine company and is not destructive, but may still find the allure of a reachable roast chicken far too tempting! The biggest delight of all is to see Romeo start to play. He is gradually learning what toys are and will now on occasion pounce on an unsuspecting plushie and throw it around, just because he can! Romeo would be so perfect for a retired person who could be around all day for him and in turn have a beautifully calm, loyal companion. Romeo is sharing his foster home with 3 other greyhounds, and is absolutely smashing with them all. He is non-confrontational and just wants to get on with everybody. If grumped at he’ll just walk away. When Romeo first arrived, he was a huge greedy bear who had obvious concern about where his next meal was coming from, so would try to ‘stockpile’. This is relaxing now that he knows that waiting his turn gets him a tasty treat, and that he gets that tasty treat every day. He lives on routine and having his meals at set times has really helped him to realise that it’s nothing to fret about. As such he has stopped trying to steal food from his foster siblings, and is more relaxed in general. ~ Other Animals ~ Generally: Great with other dogs, friendly, social, calm, balanced, non-confrontational, not yet offlead with small dogs. Romeo is excellent with other dogs regardless of size and shape. He loves his foster brother and sisters and tries hard to avoid any arguments. He has been told off a few times for trying to steal their food, and he doesn’t retaliate, just backs away. He loves snuggling with people and dogs in the evenings, and really is a fabulous dog in himself. Romeo has not been offlead with other dogs apart from his houndy foster siblings, so it would be best to watch him carefully when doing this initially in case he becomes over-excited. He would make a fab companion for another dog and could slot easily and happily into a small pack provided he got his daily dose of human attention. ~ Out and About ~ Generally: Very social, enjoys making new friends, gentleman on the lead, good traveller, not energetic. Romeo really is THE perfect travelling companion. He has excellent manners, is social but not overly excitable, quiet, obedient and very happy to follow you anywhere. If his foster mum stops for a chat, he will quietly stand and wait without a single whine or whinge. He is very happy to greet other dogs of all shapes and sizes, and is equally happy to walk on after greetings. No fuss, no complaints, excellent companionship. This boy is just fabulous! Romeo walks well on the lead, travels well in the car and isn’t scared of fireworks. He is currently getting a 30min daily walk with 2-3 ‘garden zoomies’ during the day and is content with this, so he really doesn’t need much exercise to be happy. What’s more important to him is the regularity of the walks, he loves his routine. Romeo has not had any recall work yet, so new owners will need to take that slowly and use very tasty treats to start the training. He can never be let offlead near public roads or livestock. ~ Where Can I Live? ~ Romeo is one of these wonder-dogs who can adapt and slot in almost anywhere. His only real requirement is that he gets lots of human contact and love. He lives for it. Romeo can live with other dogs very happily, but could live as an only dog easily provided he wasn’t left alone for long daily periods. He is very gentle with children over age 8. We really feel he would be excellent for a retired person or couple, as he has such low exercise requirements, is so calm and mannerly, and can provide so much quiet, loyal love. But Romeo could be an excellent addition to a family either, he is adaptable! Please consider this boy and look past his black coat to the shining gem within. ~ Where Am I? ~ Romeo is currently in foster care in Hertfordshire. He can be homed anywhere in the UK provided we have a homechecker available, but please note that you may be required to travel to meet and collect him. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Romeo is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. 19. MAX **UPDATED: 14TH DECEMBER 2013** Location: Kennels in Norfolk, UK. Max would dearly love a foster home while he waits for his forever family, this boy is wasted in kennels. Key Points: Lovely friendly boy, balanced, curious, happy-go-lucky, goofy & playful, confident, dog savvy, loves all people, good first hound, ok on lead, quick learner, not yet in a home. Meet Max! He is a 2 year old greyhound boy who was taken out of the racing world before he really got into it. Max is a really REALLY striking dog and looks ready for the ballroom floor with his beautiful black tuxedo coat. His bright, intelligent expression and carries himself very well, as you can see! Max is a tall, regal boy at 30” to the shoulder. He is a head-turner for sure! ~ Personality ~ Generally: Very friendly, loves people, squishy, approachable, happy-go-lucky, goofy, playful, confident, attentive, quick learner. Max has a very, very beautiful personality to match his handsome appearance. He is charismatic, intelligent and engaging, making him a firm favourite with the kennel staff. He really is a great big softie who loves people and dogs alike. We would love nothing more than to see this gorgeous dog move to a home environment so that he can finally get the love and fuss that he craves. Max truly has unlimited potential and is one of those ready-made perfect pooches. He is always ready to dole out some kisses, and adores getting squishy cuddles from his humans. Max is still a young boy at heart and is playful and just a little bit goofy. He is also attentive to people, especially if you have tasty treats. This boy is going to be an excellent all-rounder and family pet. He would be a great starter for a first time greyhound owner, as he has no real issues to speak of and is pretty much a blank canvas for whomever takes him on. People are really missing out on having this Max-hound in their lives. ~ In the Home ~ Generally: Not yet in a home, clean in kennel. Max has not yet been in a home environment, so new owners will need to be a bit understanding at the start and give him time to learn the house rules. It generally takes greyhounds 10-14 days to start to settle in a home, and really all they need is time and patience. We don’t think it will take this boy very long to adjust to the home life, and we know he’ll never look back once he does. Max has oodles of potential to be a happy family dog, and we can't wait to see him in a home. ~ Other Animals ~ Generally: Social boy, friendly, good dog skills, enjoys canine company, not cat safe. Max is very good with the other greyhounds in our kennels and really enjoys his offlead fun in the paddock. He is a social boy and very much enjoys the company of other dogs, especially to play with and learn from. If Max is to be an only dog, his new owner would need to make sure he has lots of canine friends so he can fulfil his weekly dog quota. Max has come along to our annual hound walk and behaved impeccably with all the other dogs – the muzzle is just a precaution and was not necessary. Max is not cat friendly. ~ Out and About ~ Generally: Attentive, curious, social, suitable to be offlead after recall work, walks ok after initial excitement. Max is a fab boy, very biddable, who just needs to be given direction to follow it. He can pull on the lead at first when he’s very excited for his ‘walkies’ time, but soon calms down. Everything is new to him and he wants to see and sniff all the roses at once! He is just moderately active and does not need a huge amount of exercise. He will be content with two 30min walks a day and a chance to stretch his legs couple of times a week. With a lot of work on bonding and recall (he currently has none) Max may be suitable to be let offlead in safe areas away from public roads and livestock. ~ Max is currently in kennels in Norfolk. He can be homed anywhere in the UK provided we have a homechecker available, but please note that you may be required to travel to our rescue to meet and collect him. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Max is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. This dear boy would benefit so very much from a chance to live in a foster home and Kerry Greyhounds UK is always eager for new foster volunteers. It is an extremely rewarding experience and costs are covered by us. If you are interested in adopting or fostering Max, you can contact me (Tam) via email: [email protected], or speak directly to Bronwen by phoning: 075 000 62648. 24. JOEY **UPDATED: JULY 2013** Location: Foster home in Norfolk, UK. Key Points: Absolutely perfect!! Excellent manners, housetrained, very responsive, willing to work with you, forms a very strong bond, dog savvy, very playful, suitable to live with cats, walks well on the lead, all round superstar. Please meet the gorgeous Joey, and then form an orderly queue! Joey, so named because of his adorable habit of standing on his back legs and bouncing like a kangaroo, is an 8 month old broken coated lurcher boy. His mum was a greyhound x deerhound x saluki and his dad a purebred whippet. He is currently 22” to the shoulder. Joey is just GORGEOUS, in every sense. He has the sweetest wee face, expressive big ears and has a beautiful silver grizzle coat. He’s sure to be an eye turner wherever he goes! ~ Personality ~ Generally: Excellent! Mannerly, gentle, playful, calm and responsive, eager to please, naturally laid back, well socialised, balanced, just wonderful. Well gosh, what can we say except that Joey is AMAZING! Though just a puppy, he is very mannerly, trusting, super-duper affectionate and develops a strong bond with his people. He is lovable, genuine, sociable, attentive, obedient, gentle, playful and just a wee bit cheeky. Sounds perfect? Well we think he is! Joey has been learning some tricks while in his foster home, and can now sit, lie down, stay and come on command. He is very responsive and loves to work with you and use his brain to get rewards. This boy is a true gem and can become literally anything his owners wish – laid back family pet, agility star, therapy dog. You name it and Joey can get there. Everyone who meets him falls in love instantly because of his wonderful character and smiley face. ~ In the Home ~ Generally: Fantastic manners for a puppy, housetrained, ok to be left for up to 4hrs, playful and likes having space to romp. Joey has been in his foster home for about 3 weeks now and is just excellent. He shares his foster home with a cat and they get along just fine, though sometimes the cat kicks him off the bed at night! He is housetrained and generally brilliant in the home provided he has enough exercise and things to play with/chew on. He is used to being left with just kitty company for up to 4 hours and doesn’t make a peep. He’s a super playful little man who loves his toys, children and really loves other dogs. Joey will occasionally have a peek at the kitchen worktops if something tasty is left there, but he will back away when told. He can jump up if very excited but is generally extremely mannerly for a puppy and a gentle reminder is all that’s needed for him to check himself and calm down. ~ Other Animals ~ Generally: Loves all other dogs, very dog savvy and has excellent communication skills, good with cats. Joey is just fantastic with other dogs. He is submissive around confident, assertive dogs and very playful and bouncy around other playful, like minded dogs. He is well socialised and dog savvy, understanding dog communication excellently and adapts accordingly. He is currently getting lots of excellent interactions and social playtimes with other dogs and loves every minute of it. Joey is also suitable to live with cats and is fine to let the cat be the boss in the situation. ~ Out and About ~ Generally: Walks to heel, doesn’t pull, offlead has good recall when bonded though forgets himself at times when in play. Joey walks like a gem on the lead, you’d forget he’s just an 8 month old pup. He doesn’t pull and absolutely loves meeting other people and dogs. Sometimes when free-playing with other dogs, Joey forgets his recall training but he is just a puppy and can be distracted at times. This is just something to be mindful of and work on before letting him offlead in large open areas. Once he has bonded to you, Joey is generally brilliant when offlead and keeps track of where you are. Please note that Joey should never be let offlead in areas near public roads. ~ Where Can I Live? ~ Joey is extremely adaptable and well-rounded, meaning he would be suitable for almost anyone. He would love to live with another dog (or several!) as his canine skills are excellent and he adores their company. However he has also shown that he adapts perfectly well to being an only pet provided he is given enough exercise, mental stimulation when left and gets several chances to interact with other dogs during the week. He is a very easy chap to handle, is very gentle and can live happily with children over 8 years of age. He is so trusting and willing to please, we want a 5 star home for this beautiful lad, where he will be given a chance to reach his full potential. ~ Where Am I? ~ Joey is currently in foster care in Norfolk, UK. He can be homed anywhere in the UK, though you will be required to travel to the foster home to meet and collect him. PLEASE NOTE that we only place dogs in cat homes in and around the Norfolk area as our behaviourist needs to be able to get to the home to provide guidance. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Joey is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. If you are interested in adopting Joey, you can contact me (Tam) via email: [email protected], or speak directly to Bronwen by phoning: 075 000 62648. Emails are usually replied to within 24 hrs. 25. DANA **UPDATED: JULY 2013** Location: Foster home in Norfolk, UK. Key Points: Excellent girl, very easy with few issues. House savvy. Very friendly. Good with other med-large dogs. Travels well. Walks to heel. Needs some work with small dogs. Super quiet and chillaxed. Perfect manners. Dear little Dana is a 7 year old ex-racing greyhound girl who is getting a chance at some home comforts now. She is a wee black girl with a very pretty face and her coat is looking wonderful now after a good bath & brush. ~ Personality ~ Generally: Fantastic friendly, loving girl. Very laid back, confident, curious, playful, sweet as can be. Dear Dana is a total sweetheart and is going to be a truly fantastic friend for whoever gives her some space on their sofa. She is extremely laid back and is one of those hounds who are just naturally ‘good’. She doesn’t put a paw wrong and settled into the home life as if she’d always been there. She is brilliant with people and other large dogs and is very affectionate. Her tail is always wagging. Despite her 7 years she loves toys to bits and its hilarious to watch her play with them! Nothing upsets this delightful girl and she is incredibly easy to keep content. She asks for nothing and is grateful for everything given to her. ~ Medical Issues ~ Dana has an old injury to her front leg that happened when she was a wee pup but never managed to heal completely right. She gets around fine and can run without issue, though she has had some trouble with climbing stairs. She is currently getting 2 30min walks a day and would need to be gradually built up to longer ones to avoid any stiffness, but other than that it doesn’t bother her at all. Dana has also had a recent dental and her remaining teeth are sparkly new now! ~ In the Home ~ Generally: Just excellent! Doesn’t do anything wrong. House savvy. Shares well with others. Very easy. Dana has been in her foster home for 3 weeks now, and as mentioned, she hasn’t put a single paw wrong. She was 100% housetrained from the very start and has gotten on excellently with the 4 other greyhounds sharing her foster home. She shares very well and is non-confrontational. She doesn’t countersurf though is very curious still about what we would consider normal household things and shopping bags that suddenly appear at nose level are very tempting for her! She doesn’t chew anything though and will walk away if told ‘no’. She is fine to be left with canine company. ~ Other Animals ~ Generally: Fantastic with other greyhounds and medium-large breed dogs, needs more socialisation with small breeds. Dana is excellent with other greyhound types and any large breed dogs, though she is still figuring out the smallies. Right now its clear she has never seen a small terrier type dog before so her natural urge is to hunt them. This will change with lots of positive socialisation though and is a common occurrence with racing greyhounds. They really just need some time and repeated chances to meet smaller dogs to realise that they are indeed dogs and not bunnies to be chased! Dana is not cat friendly. ~ Out and About ~ Generally:Walks like a dream, travels like a dream, needs work with small dogs, excellent in all other areas. Dana is really excellent on the lead and doesn’t pull, even if she spies a squirrel or small dog in the distance. She also travels like a dream in the car. Like most greyhounds, Dana is a chilled out girl and will not need a huge amount of exercise. She will be content with two 30min walks a day and perhaps a chance to stretch her legs offlead in a secure area once or twice a week. Anything longer than this is possible but will need to be gradually built up to avoid her feeling a bit stiff and sore in her bad leg. ~ Where Can I Live? ~ Dana is so laid back and non-plussed, she could easily slot into a wide range of home types. She gets on excellently with other medium-large dogs and could become part of an existing pack, though a young puppy who might constantly bug her to play might not be ideal considering her age and old leg injury. She could also live with children over the age of 8 provided they know to give her some afternoon naps – this lady loves her sleep time! Dana’s laid back attitude and gentle lead walking could also make her very suitable for a more elderly couple – really the only thing that needs any work with this lady is her opinion of small dogs, which our team can help any new owner with. This girl is just fabulous and we would dearly love to see her in a home sooner rather than later. ~ Where Am I? ~ Dana is currently in foster care in Norfolk, UK. She can be homed anywhere in the UK provided we have a homechecker available, but please note that you may be required to travel to the foster home to meet and collect her. If you are interested in adopting Dana, you can contact me (Tam) via email: [email protected], or speak directly to Bronwen by phoning: 075 000 62648. Emails are usually replied to within 24 hrs.
