  2. POPPY **UPDATED: JANUARY 2014** Poppy at a glance: What is she? - - - - - - - - - - - - -10 year old brindle greyhound. Where is she? - - - - - - - - - - - -Foster home in Norfolk. Size? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Medium-large. Good with children? - - - - - - - - Yes for kids older than 8 years. Good with dogs? - - - - - - - - - - Yes to sighthounds, not familiar with other dog types yet. Good with cats? - - - - - - - - - - -No Great dog because: - - - - - - - - A true golden oldie, very friendly, loving, still playful, loves walks. Needs work on: - - - - - - - - - - -Meeting other dog breeds and learning that they really are dogs! Interested in finding out more about this lovely girl? Please read on… Well, just take a look at Poppy. We dare you not to fall in love! Poppy is a 10 year old greyhound girl who has had a looooong life of racing and birthing pups and is now extremely deserving of a quiet home to retire to. Only the very best home offers for this girl please as she needs to be loved on, fawned on and generally spoilt for her golden years! Despite her 10 years, Poppy is in good health and has no current medical conditions. She has a lovely soft brindle coat and expressive eyes. She is 28” to the shoulder but can curl up very small when need be. ~ Personality ~ Generally: Confident, very friendly, loving, extremely happy with life, loves people, undemanding. Poppy is just amazing, nothing fazes her at all. Despite having lived all of her 10 years in kennels, she took to the home life like a duck to water. She is nicely confident and very happy to meet new people and socialise in general. She loves attention and we are sure she feels spoilt rotten now that she’s in a home environment and surrounded by people all day long. Poppy is happy all the time, really, and would be a fabulous mood-lifter for someone who has been looking for some company. You can't help but be happy when you’re around this lovely lady, she exudes it. ~ In the Home ~ Generally: Housetrained, quiet through the night, not destructive, will try to steal food from countertops. Poppy has been in her foster home for a month now and as already mentioned, she has settled right in without much fuss. You’d think she’s always been there! She is clean in the house, can be left with canine company, is not destructive and really her only ‘issue’ is her habit of jumping up on worktops to sniff out tasty dinners! Poppy LOVES toys and will have one or two play sessions every day, including the occasional mad moment in the garden with a squeaky. Definitely Poppy’s biggest love of all though is the sofa, and she really enjoys just getting to snuggle into a soft bed, especially if its beside her foster mum. Just because we feel she deserves the quiet life now, we would like to see Poppy placed in a home without young children so that she can be doted on 100% of the time! Poppy shares her foster home with 2 other greyhounds and gets along really well with them. She would like to have a greyhound friend in her forever home, but likewise Poppy could be an only dog provided she got enough human interaction daily, and was not left alone for long periods of time. ~ Other Animals ~ Generally: Great with resident canines in foster home, bit reserved with dogs out on walks, unsure of non-greyhound types and needs to learn that they are dogs. Poppy is fabulous with the 2 other greyhounds in her foster home. They share personal space just fine, play with toys and enjoy each other’s company. Poppy is confident and assertive with other greyhounds, but not at all aggressive – she simply wants a bit of respect, being an older lady, and if the greeting dog gives her that then there's no issue at all. 10 years in a greyhound kennel is a very long time in an isolated world, and as such this is Poppy’s first time seeing other dog breeds. She is having some difficulty in understanding that they really are dogs, which is a common transient issue with ex-racing greyhounds. Given lots of positive socialisation, Poppy will come to realise that although these other dogs are weirdly shaped and weirdly sized and maybe even carry a weird smell, they are still dogs. Currently Poppy is best muzzled when she’s meeting other dogs, especially small ones, but we don’t expect this to be a permanent necessity. ~ Out and About ~ Generally: Great on lead, excellent in car, gets alert if sees cat/small furry, needs socialisation with other dog breeds, excellent with people. Poppy is amazingly energetic for her 10 years, she doesn’t act old at all! She gets bouncy and even lets out a bark or two when its ‘walkie’ time, shes that happy to get out and about. She absolutely LOVES getting out to explore. She walks very well on the lead and doesn’t pull, though can get a bit whiney and alert if there are cats or small furry critters about. She is excellent in the car and is also fine with built up areas and busy traffic. ~ Where Am I? ~ Poppy is currently in foster care in Norfolk, UK. She can be homed anywhere in the UK provided we have a homechecker available, but please note that you may be required to travel to the foster home to meet and collect her. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Poppy is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. If you are interested in adopting Poppy, you can contact me (Tam) via email: [email protected], or speak directly to Bronwen by phoning: 075 000 62648. Emails are usually replied to within 24 hrs. 8. ALICE **UPDATED: DECEMBER 2013** Alice at a glance: What is she? - - - - - - - - - - - - -5 year old blue brindle whippet x. Where is she? - - - - - - - - - - - -Foster home in Norfolk. Size? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Medium. Good with children? - - - - - - - - Teenagers only. Good with dogs? - - - - - - - - - - Yes Good with cats? - - - - - - - - - - -No Great dog because: - - - - - - - - Low maintenance, sweetie pie, total Daddy’s girl, quiet and housetrained. Needs work on: - - - - - - - - - - - Putting guidelines in place as a confident lady who can grump at other dogs. Interested in finding out more about this lovely girl? Please read on… Alice is a petite whippet x girl with a beautiful blue brindle coat. She first came to us a year ago from a PTS pound, was rehomed, and has now sadly come back to us to find a new, hopefully forever home. Alice is about 5 years old and is 23” to the shoulder. She is in great condition and health. ~ Personality ~ Generally: Friendly, loves men, low maintenance, quiet, calm, plays, very confident and self-assured. Alice is a lovely little girl, friendly but quiet, lively but calm. She ADORES men and loves being around them, but will definitely say hello to anyone and everyone. Alice is very responsive and will do as she’s told when asked to sit, wait or go to bed. Alice was unfortunately returned to us for 1 instance of growling at her previous owner, making her loose trust in Alice. This seems to have been an isolated incident as Alice has been fantastic with all the people she has met in her current foster home. She shares her foster home with 4 teenagers aged 12-18 and loves them. She also greets visitors to the house and has been fine with all visiting children – choosing to greet them and then go back to dozing. She is friendly and social when out. However because of this history we can not home Alice to a family with kids younger than 12. Alice is a very confident, self-assured girl and this might have been part of her reason behind growling at her previous owner. She is not afraid to voice her complaints, and will grumble at the other dogs in her foster home if they try to share ‘her’ bed or her personal space. This grumbling has not escalated to anything more, Alice just likes a bit of respect and space. She definitely thrives best on guidelines and direction. If you are happy to provide boundaries for Alice and show her where she fits in the grand scheme of things, then everyone will be content. ~ In the Home ~ Generally: Home savvy, housetrained, ok to be left, tolerates other dogs but happier with 0-1 other dogs. Alice is very used to living in a home, having been in her previous place for about a year. She is excellent in the home, being obedient, non-destructive, quiet through the night, completely housetrained and ok to be left with canine company. Alice is sharing her current foster home with 5 other dogs and, as mentioned, she gets on ok with them as long as they don’t crowd into her sleeping area. She is quite playful and will goof around in the garden with a chew toy. ~ Other Animals ~ Generally: Confident and asks for respect from other dogs, grumps at the bouncy and rude, good with other good dogs, ok with chickens, not cat friendly. Alice is in general good with other dogs as long as they show a bit of manners. She will grump at them if they climb all over her. She is a very confident (not aggressive) lady who knows what she’s deserved, and will ask for respect from all other canines. She can get overexcited if she sees small dogs running around sometimes, and this does need to be watched in case she gets close and grabs at them. Alice is used to chickens as there are some penned in her foster home and she ignores them. She is not cat friendly, however, and will try to stalk small furries seen when out walking. ~ Out and About ~ Generally: Walks very well on lead, good in the car, gets overexcited with small dogs, generally ok in busy situations and traffic. Alice is a lovely dog to walk as she doesn’t pull and is also great in the car. She copes fine with busy, built up areas and heavy traffic. Though she will focus on small furries and cats, she doesn’t generally pull on the lead to get to them. She is happy to greet other dogs provided they aren’t very bouncy or in her face, though may need a bit of watching with very small dogs as she’s not used to seeing them yet. Alice is getting an hour walk a day with playtime at home, and seems content with this amount of exercise. She would benefit from some offlead zoomies a couple times a week, but would need to be muzzled when offlead due to her possible reaction to small dogs and furries. ~ Where Can I Live? ~ Because Alice can happily take or leave other dogs, we feel she’d be happiest as a single dog or perhaps as a companion to an undemanding pooch who will accept her grumbles and love her all the same. Alice really is a low maintenance pooch, quiet and content with nothing more than a soft bed, yummy food and head rubs. She loves her fellas so might be happiest in a home with a human daddy to dote on her. She will require some basic boundaries and guidelines put in place from day 1 so that she knows what she can and can't do, and other than that Alice is completely home ready and will make a fabulous companion for a lucky someone. Please consider this dear lady as she has spent enough time now flitting from place to place and would benefit hugely from some routine. ~ Where Am I? ~ Alice is currently in foster care in Norfolk, UK. She can be homed anywhere in the UK provided we have a homechecker available, but please note that you may be required to travel to the foster home to meet and collect her. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Alice is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. 12. DALI **UPDATED: DECEMBER 2013** Dali at a glance: What is he? - - - - - - - - - - - - -2 year old scruffy lurcher. Where is he? - - - - - - - - - - - -Kennels in Norfolk. Dali was previously in a home and so would benefit hugely from a foster home now to get him out of kennels. Size? - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Medium-large Good with children? - - - - - - - - Yes for children over 8 years. Good with dogs? - - - - - - - - - - Yes Good with cats? - - - - - - - - - - -No Great dog because: - - - - - - - - Complete cuddle monster, very loving, responds to treats, beautiful! Needs work on: - - - - - - - - - - - Previously became destructive in home due to being left all day. Interested in finding out more about this dear boy? Please read on… This beautiful scruffy boy is Dali. Isn’t he just scrumptious?! He is a 2 year old lurcher, perhaps a beddie x, who is looking for a new family to take him in. Dali was surrendered to our rescue as his previous owners did not have enough time for him, and as a result he became destructive in the home. Dali has a beautiful deerhound type scruffy coat, charcoal black in colour, making him a little bit different from the typical deerhound grey. ~ Personality ~ Generally: A cuddle monster, very friendly, loves people, active mind, responds to treats and praise. Dali has been with us for a month now and is settling well considering he’s coming from a home environment. He has OODLES of love to give and loves people to bits. He is bouncy, super cuddly and so affectionate, it’s a joy to be around him. Dali also has an active mind and likes to be with you, doing things. He would be a fantastic companion for a hiker/walker as he has lots of ‘go’, but don’t forget he is a lurcher and so does like to sleep for several hours after his exercise too! Dali loves his treats and this makes him quite trainable. He is simply a fantastic dog and will do SO well in the right kind of home where he won't be left for 9 to 6 and his active mind is utilised. ~ In the Home ~ Generally: Previously in a home and home savvy, destructive due to being left from 9-6 so needs interaction throughout the day. Dali was previously in a home before coming to us, so he is familiar with the usual household things. He had become destructive in his previous home as he was being left all day while his parents worked, and really he is just a bit too young and active to not get bored silly. In the right kind of home we don’t think Dali will be destructive, and if he ever tries he can be distracted and redirected with yummy treats and a toy. Dali gets on really well with other dogs and we feel his homing would be more successful if he could have canine company when left in the house by his parents. ~ Other Animals ~ Generally: Very good with the other dogs he has met so far, confident, friendly. Dali has been excellent with the other dogs in our kennels, and has made friends with them all. He hasn’t been specifically tested with small dogs yet, but we expect he will be fine with them. Dali can play a bit rough sometimes though, so extremely small dogs like yorkies and Chihuahuas might get accidently hurt if he was allowed to play with them. Dali loves meeting new people on walks and can get a bit impatient, but this is being worked on. ~ Out and About ~ Generally: Very good on lead, friendly, bit excitable, social and outgoing. Dali is really good on the lead and happily trots along. He can be excitable when he sees other dogs on his walks and wants to meet them RIGHT NOW, but the more he sees, the better he will get. Again, tasty treats are the way to this boy’s heart. This beautiful boy is quite active, certainly moreso than your typical greyhound, and will need a daily walk of at least 1hr to be content. He would benefit hugely from playdates with other dogs as well so that he can zoom around and let off that extra steam. Dali will need a decent amount of work on recall before he can be let offlead, but once this bridge is crossed he will be a pure delight to take out on walks and offlead hikes. Please note that Dali must never be let offlead near public roads or livestock. ~ Where Am I? ~ Dali is currently in kennels in Norfolk. He can be homed anywhere in the UK provided we have a homechecker available, but please note that you may be required to travel to our rescue to meet and collect him. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Dali is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. This dear boy would benefit so very much from a chance to live in a foster home and Kerry Greyhounds UK is always eager for new foster volunteers. It is an extremely rewarding experience and costs are covered by us. If you are interested in adopting or fostering Dali, you can contact me (Tam) via email: [email protected], or speak directly to Bronwen by phoning: 075 000 62648. Peggy is quite tall for a lady hound at 28” to the shoulder. ~ Personality ~ Generally: Quiet, initially reserved/shy but comes out of herself with time, trusting her foster parents now, very low maintenance, needs confidence building, starting to play, affectionate and loving, has a hidden cheeky side! Up to this point, Peggy has spent all her life in the one kennel with the same dogs and people around her. As such it is taking her a wee bit of time to adjust to the massive change of moving into a home, and she is currently a bit on the overwhelmed side of things. This should not be considered as a negative point against her, she simply needs more time to continue to adjust. She is coming out of herself at a steady pace right now, and can only get more confident and engaging with time. We would love to see this girl find her forever home sooner rather than later, however, so that she can finally settle down without any more upheaval in the future. Peggy is a quiet, amiable girl who will appear reserved when you first meet her, but please just give her some time to relax and you’ll see who she really is. Peggy is very loving, affectionate and sweet with her foster parents. She is becoming more forward and interactive all the time. She has the slightly quirky habit of rolling up her lip when being hand fed a treat, as though trying to be as dainty as possible. She is undemanding and thusly is a very low maintenance girl. Her previous owner reports of a little cheeky streak that we are yet to see, but it’s definitely in there somewhere! Peggy just needs a bit of breathing space to adjust, which she is currently doing at her own pace. She recently attended our annual walk and meet& greet and relaxed into the bustling atmosphere very well, even stretching out and falling asleep amongst all the noise and busyness. ~ In the Home ~ Generally: Very well behaved, housetrained, ok to be left with canine company, good at sharing, ok with visitors, gradually adjusting. As mentioned, Peggy is still adjusting to the home life, and is improving daily. She has only been in her foster home for about a month. She has most definitely needs the company and direction of another dog to show her how to react in new situations. She is sharing her foster home with 4 other canines and loves them all, but has particularly bonded to one of the male greyhounds, and follows his lead in everything. This mild neophobia that she has will dissipate once she gains in confidence, and Peggy can be a confident girl, it’s just that this huge life change has left her feeling a bit lost and unsure. We feel Peggy must go to a home with another well-adjusted dog (or several!) so that she doesn’t get overly stressed in trying to figure out what to do in new situations. Setting up a routine will also be a huge step in helping Peggy overcome this issue – when she can anticipate what’s happening next, she can gain confidence from it. Peggy has been naturally housetrained from the word go, and is very careful not to put a paw wrong in the house. She is quiet through the night and fine to be left with canine friends. She also copes fine with human visitors, and will shyly ask for a ‘hello stroke’ before going to her bed. She is quiet as a mouse and really asks for nothing, making her very easy to keep content and happy. She is clearly loving her home comforts and relishes a soft bed and warmth. She has also started to play, which is a great sign, and her favourite toy is currently a bacon Tastybone that she carries around and chews. ~ Other Animals ~ Generally: Loves and needs canine company, dog savvy, non-confrontational. Peggy is very good with other dogs, being of a complacent and non-confrontational demeanour. As mentioned, we feel it is vital that Peggy go to a home with another dog(s) present so that she can lean on them for support and follow their lead, she very much needs guidance when introduced to new things to prevent her from panicking. She has not been officially tested with small dogs yet, and this can be carried out prior to adoption if required. We expect her to be small dog friendly, however. ~ Out and About ~ Generally: Walks to heel, will be scared by loud noises, suitable to be offlead only in 100% secure areas until she gains in confidence. Like most greyhounds, Peggy will not need a huge amount of exercise. She is currently getting an hour walk a day and seems fine with this amount. She doesn’t pull on the lead and is generally very well behaved, though sudden loud noises will scare her. Especially at the start it is vital that any offlead areas are completely secure, as Peggy may get frightened and bolt should something unexpected happen. This potential problem should become obsolete a few months down the road, when she has bonded with new owners and gained in confidence, but at the start recall work must be done in completely secure areas such as tennis courts or high-fenced fields. Peggy is great in the car and just settles down to sleep. ~ Greyhounds as Pets ~ In general greyhounds are calm, mannerly dogs that are well used to being handled. They can fit very well in to a wide range of different lifestyles and usually adjust to the home life very quickly. Their soft, easy going nature often makes them ideal to live in a family with children, while their love of lazing around and low exercise requirements can make them perfect for the elderly. ~ Where Am I? ~ Peggy is currently in foster care in Norfolk, UK. She can be homed anywhere in the UK provided we have a homechecker available, but please note that you may be required to travel to the foster home to meet and collect her. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Peggy is vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure. She will be neutered before going to her new home. This girl would greatly benefit from being in a foster home, and Kerry Greyhounds UK is always in desperate need of new fosterers. It is such a rewarding experience, and costs are covered by the rescue. 24. DEANO **UPDATED: OCTOBER 2013** Location: Kennels in Suffolk, UK. Deano would love a foster home while he waits for his forever family. Key Points: Beautiful dog, gentle, friendly, social, dog savvy, playful, opening up more, affectionate, loves people, loves walks, good in car, not yet in a home. Dear Deano is a sweet lurcher boy who has really been through the ringer. He was found straying on the streets in very, very poor condition, and for a while it wasn’t known whether he’d pull through. But pull through he certainly has! Deano is still underweight, but is vastly improved from the skeleton he was initially. His coat is starting to get a bit of a shine, and there is a light in his eyes. As such he is now ready to start searching for his forever home. Though Deano has some greying around his face, we don’t think he is older than 3 years, perhaps this early silvering is due to the stresses he has endured. He is about 26” to the shoulder, and has a beautiful fawn grizzle coat. Deano also huge soulful, expressive eyes that really know how to melt one’s heart into a puddle of goo. ~ Personality ~ Generally:Beautiful character, gentle and affectionate, loving, playful, goofy, trainable, attentive, just wonderful. Despite the horrible history Deano has, he doesn’t hold any grudges and loves people to bits. He is very affectionate and friendly, happy to make new friends. With some tasty treats at hand, you have 100% Deano, and he is very attentive. He is polite and mannerly, though opening up more and more all the time. We don’t feel we’ve yet tapped into just how wonderful this dog is. As such he has oodles of potential, and will be an amazing family member for whomever gives him sofa space. Deano is now starting to play and enjoy life, and is 100% ready for adoption. We very much hope Deano can get out of kennels in the near future, as he has spent far too long surrounded by concrete. This boy deserves home comforts like no other, please contact us if you think you can give him what he really needs. ~ In the Home ~ Generally:Not yet in a home, clean in his kennel. Deano has sadly not yet been in a home environment, so new owners will need to be a bit understanding at the start and give him time to learn the house rules. It generally takes greyhounds 10-14 days to start to settle in a home, and really all they need is time and patience. Deano is right now choosing to be clean in his kennel at night, so we don’t expect it will take him very long to become housetrained. ~ Other Animals ~ Generally:Very social, dog savvy, enjoys canine company, not cat tested. Deano is very good with other dogs, and is quite the socialite. He is comfortable and content in canine company, and is not reactive if another dog grumps at him. He simply walks away and gets on with things. Deano would be a beautiful, clam companion for a resident pooch, and could also slot nicely into an existing pack. In addition, however, Deano loves people enough that he may be very happy as an only dog too, provided he gets weekly play sessions with some doggie friends. ~ Out and About ~ Generally:Loves his walks, travels well in car, pulls initially, social and friendly, suitable to be let offlead with training. Deano is not overly active. He loves his walks but loves napping as well! He also loves being warm and cosy, which is understandable considering his past. Please consider giving this beautiful dog some space on your sofa, he wants nothing more from life than to curl up with his human in the evening, infront of the fire. Deano can pull on the lead initially, but this stops once the initial excitement of being out of kennels dies down. We don’t think this pulling will continue to be an issue once he’s in a home and getting lots of people-time each day. Deano will be suitable to be let offlead in safe areas away from public roads and livestock after some recall work has been done with his new owners. ~ Where Am I? ~ Deano is currently in kennels in Suffolk. He can be homed anywhere in the UK provided we have a homechecker available, but please note that you may be required to travel to our rescue to meet and collect him. ~ Want To Adopt Me? ~ Deano is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, de-flea'd and wormed and a homecheck will be required as part of the adoption procedure.
