Samson is a sweet 11 year old Boxer boy who is in an Oldies Club foster home in St Helens, Merseyside. He came into our care due to a change in his owner’s circumstances meaning that she couldn’t keep him.

Samson settled quietly into his foster home and his foster carer tells us that he has opened up more every day. Samson is happy to be left alone for a few hours. He hasn’t lived with dogs before but he ignores barking dogs while out and dogs he passes close by he greets nicely. We therefore think that with careful introductions he could live with a quiet, low energy dog - he likes his peace! We don’t know what he is like with cats.

Laid back Samson is nice with all people. However, his foster carer thinks older children who will leave him alone to sleep in peace, and play with him when he has bursts of energy, would be ideal. He doesn’t jump up at children, but he is strong and could knock a small child over unintentionally.

He’s not a high energy dog. He likes walks but he trots rather than runs; he runs out of steam if he runs too much! Samson loves walking in woodlands. His recall hasn’t really been tested yet but his foster carer thinks he may be a dog who is safe to let off lead in a field or surrounded area, and thinks he may stay with you rather than wander off. Samson is very good in the car.

He enjoys having a nap and he’s also partial to being stroked and having a nice soft brushing! In his foster home he has an evening walk and he enjoys a late afternoon game of pull with a rope toy, or a game of chase around the yard. His foster carer hasn’t found that he is frightened of anything in particular; nothing seems to faze him. His foster carer describes Samson’s perfect home as: “With a family. He likes company, although he doesn’t demand anything from you. He likes men and looks to them to playâ€.

Samson is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed and flea-treated. He has been vet-checked since coming into our care and he has had a fatty cyst removed when he was neutered and he is recovering very well. There are some small polyps in his mouth that will need to be checked when he has general health checks in the future. He seems to be in excellent general health.

Samson is a funny, playful boy. His foster carer tells us more about him:

This boy makes a lovely companion, he just likes to be with you, to check up on what youre doing, then he’ll settle for a nap. He loves small bursts of play, enjoys his food which he eats slowly, and sometimes has a little break and goes back to it.

He loves his walks and is nicely behaved about going out. He is a little headstrong when you first go out, he likes to be just ahead of you, and you have to use your fingers to direct him, or touch his shoulder to get his attenion. He is good on a trackline, where he will take direction and enjoys the undergrowth or long grass.

He is a character who is set in his ways, but is no trouble in your home, and is very endearing. A bit of time to give him some training each day with gestures as well as commands may help him understand what you want him to do, but we have no problem getting him to follow us.

  • 1 month later...

Gentle Samson has worked his magic on his foster family and they have offered him a permanent home. I'm over the moon for him, he's so settled and happy there, and they obviously love him to pieces.

Welcome home Samson  :flowers:
