Arnie - 11 Year Old Terrier

arnieoc.jpg Arnie is a very cute 11 year old Terrier Cross who is in an Oldies Club foster home in Morecambe, Lancashire, waiting for someone to offer him a permanent home. He is an adorable, loyal and playful little dog but, like a lot of terriers, he does have his feisty side!

It only took a few days for Arnie to feel at home and he soon settled into the routine of his foster household. Because Arnie was left for long hours in his previous home (due to a change of his owner's circumstances), he became anxious about being left alone, and sometimes left a puddle on the floor. This seems to be improving at his foster home, especially if he's had a good walk before being left alone, but he will need someone with the time and patience to get him used to short absences.

Arnie's ideal home would be one where he isn't on his own too much, because he loves company. He would suit someone retired who likes to go on long walks in the country. Someone with the time to play with him with a toy would be good. Another dog may be a bonus, as it would be company for him, but plenty of fuss would do instead!

He is said to have lived with 3 cats previously, so he might be able to live with cats in his new home, but he would need careful introductions as he chases cats in the garden at his foster home. You might like to refer to our article on Cats and Dogs.

Arnie needs a firm owner as, being a Terrier, he thinks he is in charge! For example, although Arnie is fine with his normal food, he will food-guard when he has special treats that he sees as high value, such as rawhide chews. For this reason, any children in his new home would need to be at least 10 years old as they would need to understand that there are times when Arnie needs to be left undisturbed.

Arnie's foster carer tell us:

Arnie is a great little walker. We have taken him camping twice now, and he loves it. He ignores any sheep or rabbits etc., which makes him a pleasure to take on a ramble. Arnie doesn't like to sleep on his own at night, but is no trouble sleeping on his own bed at the side of yours. He doesn't try to join you!

Arnie has a full repertoire of tricks, including "high five" and "play dead". Arnie's recall seems fine, although he doesn't stray far away from you. He will happily retrieve a ball in the garden, but seems uninterested in the park. If you carry a squeaky toy for recall, he will return to you very quickly. Arnie loves to travel. He sleeps for most of the journey, but can't wait to get out when arriving at the destination.

He isn't keen on sitting on your knee, but prefers to lie at your feet. He is what has been called Head Shy; this means he tends to duck when you try to pat him on the head.

Arnie has been vet-checked and he has no medical problems. His previous owner said that he had a delicate stomach, but also said that he always drank milk. Since being in his foster home, he has only had water, which he readily drinks, and he has not shown any sign of tummy problems. Arnie is neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and flea-treated.

In summary, his foster carer tells us: He is without doubt an adorable little character.

Very sadly Arnie has been returned to our care as he couldn't accept sharing with the other dog in the home. His new owners were devastated and tried really hard with him, but had to put their other dog first in the end :(

Arnie is great with other dogs outside the home, but (as we now know) needs to be the only dog in the household!

He is now in a foster home in Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire.
