lazydaisy
Last night I was using my laptop with the cable plugged in. The icons were showing that it was using battery power even though it was plugged into the mains. I made sure the plug thingy was pushed into the black box and it reverted to mains power. However this morning it said it was on 3% battery and it was critical so it has shut itself down. Even wiggling the lead is not doing anything. Fee
Sounds as though you probably have a faulty mains cable, but it could be a dodgy connection where the mains cable plugs in. You'll probably need to replace the mains cable, but best take it in somewhere so they can test it with a new one before you buy it.
smirnoff
No good asking me - I'm a numpty with things like this. BUT - my laptop has just died from the same symptoms. I'm in touch with a guy who mends computers (mostly desktops but he's willing to have a look at mine) and he thinks it might need a new PSU (power supply unit). I'm hoping he'll have a look at it this weekend - and I can keep you informed of progress if you want! Diane

I think I'll be dropping my laptop off for him to have a look over the weekend. I'll let you know what he says. Diane
smirnoff
I've just had another word with him and he's pretty sure it's the power jack. He's ordering one from America for me - 10 -14 days delivery. They do quicker delivery but it costs £20. He then has to dismantle the laptop and solder in the new part. Parts will cost about £15.00. If you take it to someone in the UK they may well tell you that you need a new motherboard which will be more expensive, but hopefully not that bad. Sounds like a job for a PC repair man to me. lazydaisy
Took my laptop to the computer shop today and thankfully it was a faulty lead. It cost £30 for a new one.
