Laptop Help Needed

Last night I was using my laptop with the cable plugged in. The icons were showing that it was using battery power even though it was plugged into the mains. I made sure the plug thingy was pushed into the black box and it reverted to mains power. However this morning it said it was on 3% battery and it was critical so it has shut itself down. Even wiggling the lead is not doing anything. Help

Sounds as though you probably have a faulty mains cable, but it could be a dodgy connection where the mains cable plugs in.

You'll probably need to replace the mains cable, but best take it in somewhere so they can test it with a new one before you buy it.

No good asking me - I'm a numpty with things like this.

BUT - my laptop has just died from the same symptoms.

I'm in touch with a guy who mends computers (mostly desktops but he's willing to have a look at mine) and he thinks it might need a new PSU (power supply unit). I'm hoping he'll have a look at it this weekend - and I can keep you informed of progress if you want!

Yes please, that would be helpful. Sounds more expensive that a new lead!

I've just had another word with him and he's pretty sure it's the power jack. He's ordering one from America for me - 10 -14 days delivery. They do quicker delivery but it costs £20. He then has to dismantle the laptop and solder in the new part. Parts will cost about £15.00.

If you take it to someone in the UK they may well tell you that you need a new motherboard which will be more expensive, but hopefully not that bad.

Sounds like a job for a PC repair man to me.
